A Queen Anne Bureau Cabinet That Had Two Lives
Every so often a piece of furniture comes along that tells more than one story at once. This circa-1720 English Queen Anne bureau cabinet is exactly that kind of piece. Built in solid oak during the reign of Queen Anne, it started life as a simple English cabinet, the sort of thing you'd expect to find in a well-to-do household of the period. But somewhere along the way it received a dramatic makeover, redecorated in red and gilt Japanning with scenes of Chinese figures, pavilions, foliage, and birds sweeping across every surface.
The shape underneath however is classic Queen Anne. A double arched cornice with giltwood finials, mirrored doors up top opening to a little arrangement of cupboards, drawers and pigeonholes, then a slant-front below with candle slides either side and its own fitted interior. Three tiers of drawers sit at the base, standing on later bun feet. Whoever built this in the 1720s knew what they were doing. Every detail feels just right with nothing about the proportions feeling off.
It is worth putting this next to what was happening in France around the same period. French cabinets of the era were chasing a similar fascination with the East, but they got there through lacquer work, marquetry and ormolu mounts rather than paint. Where a French piece might lean toward black or tortoise shell lacquer for that exotic look, this English cabinet went for red. Two countries, two very different ideas of what "Oriental" should look like on a piece of furniture.
What you're left with is a cabinet that's honest about its own history rather than pretending to be something it's not. It was made in the 1720s, then reinvented in the 1940s, and both moments are still visible if you know where to look. That layering is really what makes it worth a second glance. Some pieces are collector items. And this particular piece is fit to be one!

A Set of Six: 1940s Spanish Walnut Chairs
At first glance, this set of six walnut chairs could easily be mistaken for something off a Texas ranch β dark, worn leather, weighty timber frames, and rows of chunky brass studs holding it all together. It's an easy assumption to make. But then you look closer at the details below and the story runs quite differently. These chairs are Spanish, made around the 1940s, and they sit firmly within a much older tradition of Spanish Colonial furniture-making β one that stretches back centuries, long before anyone was building ranches in Texas.
The pairing of leather, walnut and brass nailheads has been a hallmark of Spanish seating since at least the 17th century, when hides were stretched over hand-carved frames and pinned in place with hammered brass studs, both for strength and decoration. That same formula travelled with Spanish settlers into the Americas, which is exactly why so much "Western" and ranch-style furniture ended up looking Spanish in the first place β the influence runs the other way.
What makes this particular set so appealing is that the leather seats and backs are original, not replaced, and they've developed a rich, uneven patina that no amount of new tooling could fake. The brass studs, too, have that soft, worn glow that only comes from decades of handling.
So, are antique chairs like these still relevant today? Very much so. Interiors have swung firmly back towards texture, warmth and pieces with a visible history β the opposite of anything mass-produced. A set of six is also a genuinely useful find, since matching antique dining chairs in that quantity, in this condition, are surprisingly hard to come by. Whether used as a full dining set or split in pairs around a room, they bring a sense of weight and story that new furniture simply can't replicate.
