Chapter Twenty
Holding Katnissâs hand as we make our way to the mess hall results in a few wrong turns and taking longer than usual to make it to dinner, both of us laughing at our hopelessness. My thoughts are too buzzed with the absolute elation of holding her hand and getting to say to myself that Katniss Everdeen is my girlfriend. Iâm her boyfriend. Not to win the Games or protect our families or for a propo. But because itâs something we want. Something we finally both want.Â
Although we reluctantly let go of one anotherâs hand to scoop up our trays of food, when we sit down at the table and greet Delly, she has a smile thatâs even more sparkling than usual.
âDid something happen?â she asks. âYou both actually seem happy.â
Katniss and I look at each other. We hadnât talked about how we would handle other people knowing about us. If weâd been normal, Iâd never care about people knowing. The propos and the pressure we have complicate things, though.
âYes,â Katniss says, deciding for us. âWeâre together now.â
âYou two!â Delly exclaims. âHow long have you been hiding this?â
âYouâre technically the first person to know,â I say. âAnd I think Katniss would agree we donât really want to draw attention to it right now.â

*pokes head out from behind a rock* Hi. Hopefully y'all aren't fed up with waiting for me yet. And I am happy to announce... I HAVE A CHAPTER READY! Witchy Wednesdays will resume on Jan 31st and hopefully continue, as long as the muse does not abandon me again. In celebration, a preview!
--
âDo you have everything?â Katniss asks for the sixth time in fifteen minutes. Her hand brushing down Peetaâs arm, resting lightly on his wrist as he grips his forearm crutches.
I roll my eyes and wonder why on earth I ever wished for my sister to get a freaking clue.
âI think so,â Peeta says and I scoff.
âOh come on, you two. Heâs only going right next door. Itâs not like youâre never seeing each other again,â I say and Katniss scowls at me. âDonât give me that look. We both know youâll be scurrying across tree branches tonight to sleep with him. Anything heâs forgotten, you can take to him then.â
Posted a new chapter of Katniss Gets Kisses (and made a banner for updates!). Despite the tame title, this fic is rated E and nearly the whole thing is smut, so minors dni.
A modern-day supernatural Everlark fanfic, full of surprises and angst. Who knew you could fall in love with the enemy?
Pairing: Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark
Concept: Vampire & Vampire Hunter
Summary: Humans and vampires have been enemies for decades. Katniss Everdeen wanted the infamous vampire hunter in her hometown dead and she would do anything it takes. Her plan backfired and had to flee. Years later, Peeta Mellark is now the one out for blood⌠But what if he finds out maybe sheâs not so evil after all?
You voted, I delivered! Just a small drabble of Katniss getting injured while hunting and Peeta takes care of her. Short and sweet, I apologize for my rusty writing, itâs been a while.
Katniss returned home with a few scrapes on her hands and a limp after a hunting session. Usually she had an animal with her, but not this time. She was on a trail with a lot of tree roots that were above ground, took one wrong step and tripped. Once inside, the bow was hung up on a rack and the quiver of arrows were resting against the wall.
âIâm home.â She exclaimed, walking into the living room and leaned into the doorway. Peeta was folding a page in his book and getting up to greet her.
He furrowed her brows, noticing Katniss had no game with her. âNo luck?â
She sighs, shaking her head,âI fell. I could always go back out later.â
âAre you alright?â His voice is full of worry as he gently takes her hands into his own, but pulls away as he sees her wince. Katniss turned them over, revealing the small scrapes on them.
Already, the boy was heading to the bathroom for the first aid kit. âNo way youâre going back out there, Katniss.â
âBut-â
âNo.â
Katniss sighs, carefully making her way over to the sofa and sitting down. Why did she even bother to argue? This girl could have a bruise, and Peeta would be worried like this - but thatâs the thing she liked about him, he always cared for her. He just never wanted to see her hurt in any way possible.
He returned to the living room and crouched down, placing the first aid kit on the floor. âDo you think you fractured your ankle?â He asks, starting to remove her boot and sock.
âPeeta, I swear Iâm fine.â
Her ankle was swollen and not bent at an odd angle, so it mustâve been a sprain - nothing more. He still ended up wrapping it with an elastic bandage so it could reduce the swelling at least. Once the foot injury was dealt with, he sat on the cushion next to Katniss and asked to see her hands. She laid them flat, palm upwards so he could examine. There ended up being splinters, which he carefully took out with a pair of tweezers and disinfected the scrapes then bandaged them up too.
âDidn't know you were a doctor and a baker.â Katniss teased, a smile forming on her face. âBut thank you, Peeta.â
âLearned from the best.â He replied, packing away the equipment,âWe take care of each other⌠Itâs just what we do.â
âSo, doc⌠What do you suggest now?â
âTo rest.â Peeta gestures to her bandaged ankle,âYouâre not hunting until that is healed, Iâm afraid.â
âAre you saying youâre going to be the one to hunt?â She jokes.
âIâd never dare to take the Girl on Fireâs place.â He shook his head with a chuckle,âNow letâs get you to bed, hm?â Peeta stood and carefully picked Katniss up in his arms, bridal style.

I will never get sick of this. Iâm hurtling through the air, as graceful as a ballerina, the alleyway a dark ribbon far below me. Jumping off of buildings used to terrify me. Now, itâs old hat.
I somersault through the air before landing lightly on the rooftop, my black boots barely making a sound on the concrete.Â
Spiderman lands just a moment after I do. His toned body is wrapped up in red and blue spandex like a present. Even under the mask, I can tell heâs smiling.Â
âLooks like we ruined their night,â he says, jerking his thumb to where we left two thieves webbed on the side of the building across the street. Their obnoxious voices carry across the street.
âCurse you, Spiderman!â
âGod, do people really say that?â I wrinkle my nose although Spiderman canât see under my mask. âSo clichĂŠ.â
âVery unoriginal.â He laughs.
âIâm a little offended theyâre not cursing me.â Granted, the Black Cat is much newer on the NYC superhero scene, but still. Youâd think Iâd get some credit.
Spiderman is watching me intently, and I assume heâs admiring my new costume. Heâs barely kept his eyes off of it all night. I preen a little. I did a few favors for a tailor in Hellâs Kitchen, and he paid me back with this fitted all-black jumpsuit and matching cat-ear mask.
âWhere to next?â I ask. The city is spread out like a maze of twinkling lights below us, and the night is young.
âLooks like this building could use some surveillance,â he says, his voice low.
âWhat? Thereâs nothing going -â
Spiderman pushes me up against a wall, his hands all over me. I lift up his mask just above his mouth and he moves mine, just high enough for our lips to touch. He kisses me hard, but I barely notice the bricks digging into my back.Â
Yup. He definitely likes the new suit.
Normally Iâm the one that pounces on Spiderman after patrol, but today his movements are urgent, like he wants to devour me. I am definitely not complaining.Â
His slim hips press into me, making my head get fuzzy. He tastes like sugar and smells like rain. Last week, I was able to make him moan so loud it scared some pigeons. Tonight, Iâll try to make a new record.
I lick the soft skin of his neck and he groans. âYouâre going to be the death of me.âÂ
I bite him, scraping my teeth under his ear. âOuch, that â ahhhââ
I lift his mask even higher, but he catches my wrist.
Damn.
âDonât you think itâs time? Weâve been partners for months,â I pout.
He jerks his mask back on and leaps onto the wall above me so heâs well out of reach.Â
âCome on, donât be like that.â I cross my arms.
âAre you ready to reveal your identity?â he shoots back.
âHow about you go first and weâll see.â I twist some of the platinum blonde hair of my wig between my fingers. I always wonder what he would think if he saw my actual hair, which is long and dark. As for whatâs behind his mask, itâs driving me crazy not to know.
âIâll see you tomorrow Cat,â he says flatly.
âSeriously? We were just getting started!â But itâs too late, heâs leapt off of the building and is swinging off into the distance, which is a bit dramatic if you ask me. I sigh.
Maybe he just doesnât like you.
Insecurity twists in my stomach like a knife. But I push it away. Just because he doesnât want to reveal his super-secret identity just yet doesnât mean anything.
I climb my way down into the alley, then head towards the Upper East Side, and home.

Unfortunately, my commute home is interrupted. Or rather, I interrupt five men attempting to rob a woman in dark side street. I take four of the guys out easy, but without Spiderman to watch my back, one of the morons manages to slice my arm with his pocket knife. I punch him between the eyes a little harder than necessary and he falls to the pavement, which is perhaps an overreaction on my part, but very satisfying.
When the woman is safely on her way with her purse returned, I sprint home until Iâm finally climbing in the living room window of the apartment that I share with my sister.Â
âLook at you!â Prim is still in her scrubs, sitting on the couch. She eyes the blood dripping from my wound and sets her TV dinner aside. âIâll go get my kit.â
âIâm fine!â I call after her, and try not to get blood on the carpet as I sink down at the kitchen table.
âYouâre not fine,â Prim says. I only yell a little when she douses antiseptic on the wound. Luckily, Prim manages to stitch me up in no time.
âYouâre so smart. Why didnât Buttercup bite you instead of me?â
Prim swats me on the arm. âButtercup didnât bite you.â
"Sure he did. The bastard.â
Buttercup, the cat in question, glowers at me from his chair. I donât remember much about the night I got my powers - just the wet slide of rain on my skin, a dark alleyway, the smell of blood and finally waking up to a this damn tabby meowing at me, as if to say, âyouâre late.â He followed me home and hasnât left since.
âAll set.â Prim sets down her needle and fixes me with an evil grin. âSo, when are you going to ask out to Spiderman?â
I groan. âThanks for the stitches, duckie.â I ruffle her hair and dance past her to my room.
âCome on!â Prim calls, but I shut the door before she can give me the third degree. How can I ask him out when he canât even trust me? What are we going to do, go on a date to a movie in full costume? I flop onto my bed. Itâs tomorrowâs problem. Tonight, I sink gratefully into sleep.
KpkpkpÂ
Thereâs nothing like New York City in the fall. The crisp air, the Halloween decorations on the stoops, and the store displays of diamonds. Ok, maybe that last one is not quite fall-themed, but I find myself drawn to the window of Tiffanyâs where I try not to drool over a diamond necklace. My fingers itch. Iâve never broke into Tiffanyâs, but it would be so easy. And donât I deserve a little treat? Apparently, word has gotten around that Iâm working with Spiderman, and now no shortage of freaks are crawling out of the woodwork to take a bite at me. Freaking Vulture of all people tried to take me out today during an early-morning patrol in Central Park, the jerk.
The necklace is so shiny, and princess-cut, which is my favorite.
But no, those days are over. When I got my powers, I promised myself Iâd only steal enough to get Prim through med school, and pay for my degree. Those days are over.
With heroic restraint I turn away, and march to class along with a horde of my fellow NYU students. I find a seat in the huge lecture hall, filled with the chatter of students.
Iâm just pulling out my notebook when a student beside me speaks.
âThereâs something in your hair.â
âWhat?â I turn to see heâs cute, with intelligent eyes behind glasses.
âThere.â He plucks a leaf out of my messy braid. âHave you been getting into fights with plants?âÂ
No, but Vulture thought it would be funny to throw me into a tree.
âThanks,â I say. He flashes me a smile. He has a dimple, just one, on his right cheek. Itâs adorable.
âAre you a criminology major?â
âEnvironmental science and French double major.â
Heâs eyebrows disappear into his curly hair.
âAre you?â I ask.Â
âIâm a computer science major. Just declared it. I was debating between chemistry and computer science for a while.â
My interest is piqued. I havenât met a lot of computer science majors since they always seem chained to their laptops in the STEM labs.Â
âWhy does a future software engineer need to take Criminology 101?â
He fiddles with his pen. âWhy are you taking this class? Itâs not exactly a French major course requirement.âÂ
I canât tell him itâs to help support my, uh, extracurriculars. He lets the question hang, and neither of us move to answer.
âWhat else are you taking?â I finally ask.
âCalculus, physics, Python. Oh, and photography.â
Itâs my turn to raise an eyebrow. Thatâs a lot of classes. âWhy photography?â
âI have this internship with The Daily Bugle.â
I make a face. âUgh, the Bugle is the worst. Always slandering Spiderman for literally no reason.â
I realize too late Iâve probably offended him, but he shrugs nonchalantly. âYeah, I tend to agree. But it pays the bills.â
âIâm Katniss.âÂ
âPeeta.â He shakes my hand, and his bicep flexes under the blue long sleeve shirt that matches his eyes.
Iâll have to ask Spiderman if he knows Peeta. He has some contacts at the Bugle, like his photographer that magically gets all these amazing shots of Spiderman taking down bad guys. Iâm beginning to think he takes his own photos and just sends them in to his photographer friend there.Â
It looks like Peeta about to say something more but the professor strides in and the lecture begins. I scribble notes but keep getting distracted. Peeta laughs at the professorâs jokes, and each time my heart does this weird little flip. I even catch him staring at me once before he looks away hurriedly.
At the end of the hour, Iâm packing my bag when he flashes me a smile.
âWant to grab coffee tomorrow? Thereâs this cute coffee shop called The BeanââÂ
âIn the East Village?â Itâs a clean but tiny hole in the wall, and hardly anyone goes there. I know this because Spiderman and I have been a few times to fuel up on caffeine before patrol.
Wait â is this a date? Peeta is smiling crookedly at me. I picture a flash of red and blue and guilt sits heavy in my stomach.
âUm, maybe?â
âMaybe?â Peeta cocks his head. Iâm starting to melt under his guileless gaze and nerdy-cute glasses. How can I say no?
âNo, I mean â yes. Yes, letâs get coffee.â
Spiderman has made it clear he doesnât want to share his identity. Which I totally understand. But we canât have a relationship if weâre always hiding behind a mask.
âNoon tomorrow?â I suggest. This date will be good for me. Even if Spiderman kisses me with the intensity of a fire consuming a house, even if his laugh is like a spring breeze â no. Stop it!Â
Peeta nods, swinging his bag gracefully over his shoulder.Â
âSee you then, Kat.â
I freeze. Thereâs something in the sound of his voice, or maybe itâs because itâs so close to what Spiderman always calls me, that makes me do a double take.
For the first time since Iâve met him, Peeta is frowning. âNope, I can see that was a mistake.â
âI prefer Katniss.â I shrug.Â
âAll right. Katniss.â
I like it when he says my name. A lot. But I donât show it.
I turn on my heel and hurry out of class.

I decided to write this little Everlark piece, based on this post of mine yesterday:
It happens suddenly. First the thunder, then the rain. It shatters against the roof and the windows, drowning out all other sounds. Peeta grips the back of his chair and his eyes take on that distant look that tells me heâs been transported back to the darker times, back to the Capitol. I sit still, unsure of what to do, staring at his bowl of lamb stew that now sits on our wooden table untouched as little tremors take over his body. What can I do? I want to go over, to wrap my arms around him, but heâs said before that sometimes he just needs time to himself â so I donât. After half an hour, Iâm about to stand up and go around the table to him when he gets up shakily and says he needs some time to himself. He walks away, mumbling something about water and Johanna and screams.
I sit tense in my seat, my own bowl gone cold, and stare at the rain clattering against the window. Peeta had opened the window earlier in the day, to let in some fresh air. Because Iâd refused to go out today. Because it had been too difficult to even get out of bed. Until Peeta had scooped me up in his arms and carried me downstairs half an hour ago, despite my weak protests. He said heâd not gone out of his way to get this lamb stew for it to be wasted. Now the rain drips in through the top opening in the window and pools on the ledge. Iâm reminded of the rain dripping in through the cave in the first Games. Huddling against Peeta in the sleeping bag, trying to absorb his own warmth into myself as the cave grew colder around us. My inept attempts at flirting with the good-natured boy with those blue eyes that settled and unsettled me. Those kisses that twisted my insides with something warm.
Before I know it, Iâm up and moving. Pushing the chairs away from the table, putting our bowls into the little oven to reheat. I muster up all the strength I can to push the table closer to the sofa that sits a few metres away. Once itâs close enough, I grab the blanket off the sofa, draping it over the back of the sofa and the table, creating a sort of canopy, like the one Peeta made to protect me from the rain in the cave. Peetaâs art books prove to be sturdy enough to weigh down the blanket corners on the table to keep it from slipping off. I then strip the sofa of its cushions and carefully place them under the canopy and the table, creating a soft floor we can sit on. More blankets thrown in on top. The lamps from the kitchen counter and outside in the hallway then make their way into my den, casting a soft glow inside.
Iâve just retrieved the bowls from the oven and placed them inside my little makeshift cave when Peeta comes back into the room. He looks weary, tired. Once he sees me bent down under the blanket, the bowls of steaming lamb stew, his face takes on a quizzical look.
âWhatââ
âI thought maybe we needed to⌠escape to our cave for a little while,â I hold out my hand, inviting him to join me. He raises his eyebrows at me, ruffles his hand through his wavy blonde hair before he crouches down and follows me under the canopy. I snuggle in closer to him, throwing one of the blankets over us, and then another one to make sure Peetaâs legs are covered. I carefully place our bowls on our laps.
âEat up,â I say, looking up into his tired eyes. He gives me a soft smile, the kind that always melts my insides with its warmth, before he picks up his spoon. We eat quietly, listening to the rain pouring down outside. Periodically, Peeta scoops some of the dried plums out of his own bowl and adds them into mine. I accept them with a smile, realising just how hungry Iâve been after a day of staying huddled in my own bed. After weâve fully emptied our bowls, Peeta reaches up outside our den to place them onto the table above. He settles back inside, stretching out to lie down, his head propped up by cushions. I instinctively lie down next to him, draping my leg over his and resting my head against his chest, feeling its steady rise and fall. His arms tighten around me and I can feel his breath tickling the top of my head as he bends his head down into my hair.
âSo⌠how about that kiss?â
I laugh before I make myself rise up enough to see his grinning face, look into those blue eyes that have come back from the distant place to seek out my face. I feel his lips smile against my own as I lean down to kiss him.
Theyâll never live down the stunt with the berries. They should probably just accept that. Peeta is rescued from the arena along with Katniss (post-Catching Fire/Mockingjay divergence)

It was all for the Games, she reminds herself. How they acted.
Read on AO3
When the train makes a brief stop for fuel, they're allowed to go outside for some fresh air. There's no longer any need to guard them, and now that they're alone for the first time, away from the cameras and without Haymitch in her ear, Katniss can't think of anything to say.
They walk hand in hand along the tracks. After about 100 yards, Peeta drops her hand and wipes his palms against his slacks. Her fingers flex in his absence. "I figured you could use the break," he says.
She doesn't understand. "From what?" she says, right as he nods toward something past her shoulder. She looks to see Haymitch approaching.
"Great job, you two," he says, keeping his voice low, even now, in the middle of nowhere. "Just keep it up in the district until the cameras are gone. We should be okay."
"That's easy for him to say," Peeta mutters once Haymitch is out of earshot.
Katniss is still watching Haymitch as he boards the train. "He told you?" She asks. She should feel relieved to finally have it out in the open, and she supposes she is, but she can't help feeling guilty for keeping secrets from him.
"Didn't have to," he says. He puts his hands in his pocket and kicks at the track with the toe of his shoe. Suddenly he feels distant. Further than when he was passed out from fever. She wants to reach for his hand again, but knows she shouldn't. "I figured it out during the reunion show. All the kissing. I appreciate the enthusiasm, but even I know I'm not that good." She's about to point out that he kissed her first on stage, but thinks better of it. Peeta's smile turns rueful. "It didn't make sense to keep up the strategy outside of the Arena, unless there was something else going on."
âThe Capitol didn't like being outsmarted."
"Makes sense," he says with a nod.
"And Haymitch wouldn't let me tell you about it," she continues. "I swear he had me locked up in my room the other night. I don't know why."
"He probably thought he was protecting me. Plausible deniability and whatnot."
"He knew you wouldn't need any coaching. Unlike me. I practically need him to feed me lines word for word."
"I doubt that," Peeta says. He laughs, but there's something sad about it. "I take back what I said before, about you being a bad liar. You almost had me fooled a few times."
"I could say the same about you," she answers carefully. There were things that he said in the Arena that seemed too real to be made up.
"Some parts I didn't have to fake," he admits.
She blushes and looks away quickly. Sure, there were moments where her only motivation was to get medicine or food, but then there were other times. Like when they were separated on the hovercraft, and that kiss...
"I didn't mean to..." she begins to say.
"Katniss don't. We both got what we wanted, right?" He places a hand on her shoulder, and it feels nice, so she leans into it. She's grown so used to the feel of his arms around her, it's almost become second nature. He tilts his head to the side in a thoughtful way, and when he smiles this time, she actually believes it. "To be madly in love," he adds with a wink.
She's reminded of that moment when she found him dying by the river. When they became a team. She'd been so grossed out by his wound, that his teasing was the only thing that kept her together. She feels that again now, and she hugs him tightly without a second thought.
She allows herself a brief moment of peace. In a few hours they'll be back in Twelve, and things will be different. There won't be any reason for affection without an audience, she supposes, and carrying on this way once the cameras are gone will force her to figure out what this all means. Not just her feelings for Peeta, but for Gale too.
Not that there's any avoiding that now. If Katniss confesses that the stunt with the berries rattled the Capitol, Gale might get crazy thoughts about uprisings and rebellions, and then they'd all be in even more danger. But then she and Peeta would have to carry on with this ruse back home. And she's not sure that's something she could do, not when there's a lick of truth behind it.
"You want to head back inside?" Peeta asks, pulling her from her thoughts.
"No, I want to stay out here for as long as they'll let us."
His arms tighten around her, and she buries her face against his chest in the same way she would in the cave. The only time she's felt safe. There aren't any cameras, so there's no reason to hide, but she holds onto him anyway, somehow dreading the moment she'll have to let go.
It was all for the Games, she reminds herself. How they acted.
******
Katniss doesn't realize she's been screaming until she pulls herself from sleep and feels her throat is raw. It's still dark outside, and she can't read the clock on the wall in this light.
The memory of her dream is still a haze, but she can remember a few details. It was the mutts again. The ones with the dead tributes' eyes. This time, when theyâd pulled Peeta over the edge of the cornucopia, she couldnât stop it, and he'd disappeared in the pack, until a new mutt emerged with eyes so familiar and blue...
Peeta's safe, she reminds herself. They both made it home.
She forgets sometimes, though. That period of the Games feels so disjointed between the sleep deprivation, and the tracker jacker venom, and whatever drug the Capitol used to keep her sedated in the days after. She loses track of what's real and what she's conjured up in a nightmare.
Peetaâs safe, she assures herself again, but sheâs never actually sure.
She sits up to regain her bearings. As usual, she's been sleeping on the couch in the sitting room. She rarely makes it to her room upstairs, because she feels too uneasy about leaving the front door unguarded.
Her mother is in the kitchen, so it's either close to dawn, or Katniss's shouts have woken her. Her mother enters the sitting room with a steaming mug that smells too sweet. How the tables have turned. Now Katniss is the one being knocked out with sugar berries.
"Why don't you head up to bed," her mother urges.
Katniss stands to look out the window. She can't see Peeta's house from here, and she finds that unnerving. "I'm going for a walk," she says instead.
She picks up her bow by the door and slings her game bag over her shoulder.
The night air is still sticky and humid. Thereâs been little relief from the late summer heat, even with fall so near. Katniss walks the perimeter of the neighborhood out of habit. Haymitch warned her that the Capitol keeps a close eye on its victors, placing cameras in the street lights and microphones in their homes. Even when sheâs doing nothing wrong, Katniss does her best to avoid them.
Katniss has been on her best behavior since returning from the Capitol, anyway. Except for Sundays, when for a few brief hours, she pretends her life hasnât changed completely. At least she had tried.
In the arena, Katniss had felt conflicted about how Gale would perceive her relationship with Peeta. Itâs not like she owed him anything, they werenât anything more than friends. But it felt like they could have been more, if she had been paying attention.
When she returned home, it took a while for the film crews to leave, so weeks had passed before she could escape to the woods. Gale wasnât at their usual spot, and she sat there for hours waiting, wondering if she should go on without him, or return home empty handed.
She couldnât get to the bottom of what she was feeling, only that she was mourning the loss of something important that sheâd never get back. She was fighting off the urge to cry, when suddenly Gale appeared silently through the clearing.
She hadnât realized the weight sheâd been carrying until it melted away in that instant. She ran into his arms and held him tightly, as if she could absorb every piece she felt sheâd lost in the Arena.
They fell into their routine without missing a beat. Setting a dozen snares and picking off two turkeys with nothing more than a few nods of their heads. It wasnât until they sat down to eat breakfast that they actually spoke, catching up about things around town. Katniss had to catch herself more than a few times from mentioning Peeta, though she couldnât help thinking about him.
He would have driven Gale crazy in the woods, with his heavy steps and endless need to chatter. Katniss imagined parking him by the lake with a fishing pole to keep him busy while they hunted. But picturing Peeta in their place felt like some kind of betrayal, and she didnât know why.
That was until they returned to the fence, and Gale paused to hold her face in a way he never had before. She recognized that look, though. He was going to kiss her! She ducked away in a panic before he could, and his mouth landed in her hair. âOh,â was all he said.
Katniss had run home so quickly, sheâd left all the game behind. If sharing her hunting spot with Gale felt like a betrayal, then kissing anyone but Peeta felt the same.
So it was settled. Mostly.
The houses along the street in Victorâs Village are all dark, which isn't surprising, since only three are lived in. What troubles her is Peeta's bedroom window being closed. He always sleeps with it open.
She pulls an arrow from her sheath and nocks it without really knowing why. They're safe in Twelve. Nothing is going to happen to them. Her pace quickens as she moves down the street, and she wonders if she'll ever shake the feeling of being followed.
Every bristle of the leaves or snap of a twig makes her jump. Her heartbeat pounds like footsteps in her ears. No. Those are real, she pulls her weapon up and turns to find a shadowy figure behind her. He raises both hands in the air, then laughs.
Peeta.
She lowers the arrow. "Where are you going?" she tries to say calmly, but her nerves are so shot it comes out as a demand.
"Home," he replies, nodding toward the structure behind them.
She's overreacting and she knows it. She replaces the arrow and shoulders her bow. "I was worried..."
"I'm sorry," he says. "I didn't think you'd be coming around anymore."
It's quiet after that, and neither want to fill in the details.
See, moving into Victor's Village is pretty lonely. Katniss's mother and sister came along with her, but Peeta's family decided to remain in town, so he's in his house all by himself. Prim started insisting they invite both Peeta and Haymitch over for dinner each night, so they wouldnât be alone. Haymitch rarely took them up on the offer, but Peeta almost always did.
This one time Katniss decided she was going to make lamb stew, her favorite dish from the Capitol. She didn't have any lamb, though, so had to use venison, which meant she really had to get the spices right. Their kitchens are well stocked, and sometimes she goes a little overboard on experimenting with flavors.
Peeta was the only other person who knew how lamb stew was supposed to taste, so she was running each spice past him before adding a healthy pinch to the simmering pot. He was teasing her about her cooking style, and all right, perhaps she didn't have to use the entire spice rack with every meal, but she'd reminded him that at least her cooking had never killed anyone.
Anyway, after dinner Peeta would usually stick around for a while, and they'd sit in the den reading, or playing board games, or talking about their life before the Games. Inevitably, one of them would doze off, while the other continued to quietly keep busy.
On one occasion, sheâd lost track of the time, and woke to find him polishing the pieces for the chess board they only ever used for checkers. âWhy didnât you wake me?â She had asked.
âIâve told you before,â he said. âYouâre much nicer when youâre sleeping.â She scowled at him as he sat on the sofa beside her. âI figured if youâve been anything like me, you could use the rest.â
âNot sleeping well,â she concluded.
âI donât think I could string together more than two hours of sleep at a time.â
She knew what he meant. She was so used to sleeping in shifts, sheâd snap awake feeling so alert, itâd take hours to settle down again. âYouâd think the three days they had us knocked out after would have reset something,â she mused.
âNah, the enhancements only made it worse,â he said. âIâll wake up sometimes thinking my leg is caught in a bear trap.â He tapped on his fake leg.
âYou donât take it off to sleep?â
He smiled sadly. âI canât. They didnât want to risk me ever being seen without it, I think.â
Peeta didnât blame her for losing his leg. Heâd be dead without the tourniquet, and he knew it. She couldnât help but feel guilty, though, especially when she made it through the Arena with little more than a body polish and an invisible microphone in her ear. It could have been so much worse.
âYou should have seen the enhancements they tried to pass off on me,â she didnât elaborate past that, but it wasnât hard to figure it out. Sure it could have been one of the Capitolâs more outlandish styles, like permanent wings, but the female Victors all ended up with the same standard body type.
His eyes flitted briefly down to her chest. âUgh, not really?â He groaned.
âHaymitch had to intervene.â
âNow that I would have liked to see,â he said. He looked at something across the room with a frown. âThe Capitol sure is an interesting place,â he said diplomatically.
She caught on quickly. They were speaking too critically of the Capitol, who were probably recording their every word. âOnly a few more months until the Victory Tour. Are you excited to go back?â
âYeah, I bet the food will be grand,â he said.
He look tired, and she felt compelled to brush the hair from his forehead in that comforting way he had in the cave. His mouth turned up in a lazy smile, so she kept on doing it.
âYour turn,â she said.
âHmm?â
âYou sleep, and Iâll keep an eye out for bears.â
His eyes were already closed. âThe bears are fine,â he said. âItâs the traps Iâm worried about.â
âFine then, Iâll keep track of where theyâre stepping, so youâll know the safe way out.â
His laughter was more like a low rumble, and it filled her entire chest with warmth. âThank you, Katniss.â
She kept stroking his forehead long after heâd fallen asleep.
This became their routine until her mother started insisting Peeta head home at a decent hour, as if they'd been up to something nefarious. And Peeta would be all affable and polite about it as he hurried out the door, while nobody asked Katniss what she wanted in her own home.
So after everyone else had gone to bed, and Katniss had jerked awake from her first attempt at sleep for the night, she'd climb out her window and find herself outside Peeta's house, tapping on his bedroom window.
Heâd leave it open for her after that.
But then she'd gone and ruined it, because one morning, after a rare full night's sleep, he'd accidentally given her a light kiss, same as theyâd shared nearly a thousand times for the cameras, and they could have gone on as if nothing had happened. Except she felt that gentle stir in her chest and found herself wanting another. And another. Then another dozen more.
That night, she went back to sleeping alone on her couch. And acting as neighborhood watch, apparently.
"I was at the bakery," Peeta explains, pulling her from her thoughts. "Figured I could give my father a head start with the morning prep."
"Right." This reminds her of something, and she retrieves a wrapped package from her game bag. "Squirrel jerky for your father," she says.
She hasn't traded with the baker since returning home, because she can get bread from Peeta now, and there's something mortifying about being around his family. The star crossed lovers sham was an open secret in District Twelve, but it didn't change the fact she'd saved their son's life largely by coaxing him into taking sips of broth for kisses. She isn't sure how Peeta sits across the dinner table from her mother every night.
"Thanks," Peeta says. "You want me to walk you home?"
She shakes her head and he gestures for her to head toward his place.
Inside, he serves her a plate of "rejected" cookies that look perfect to her. She's still licking frosting off her fingers as she follows him to his bedroom. "You're lucky you already have a talent," she muses.
The Victory Tour is coming up soon, and as victors, Peeta and Katniss are supposed to reveal their talent, which becomes their career of sorts, since they'll never actually have to work aside from their responsibility to the Games. Katniss's talent for hunting was deemed illegal, and her talent for skinning hides: gross. Cinna ran with it though, reasoning that her use of leathers could give her a knack for fashion design. It did not, but he's determined to make it work.
She wonders what Haymitch's talent is. It doesn't seem fair that he's turned being "Panem's favorite drunk" into a career.
"Actually, Portia wants me to be an artist," Peeta says. He tosses her a sketch book when she sits on his bed. "She thinks it's more romantic."
Katniss had vetoed the idea of becoming a singer, but now she's seriously considering it, if it means one upping Peeta for once. She flips through the pages, and as expected, they're all brilliant. The sketches mostly take place in the arena, and it quickly emerges that Katniss is his primary subject. She stares down at her reflection, drowning in a pool of blood.
"Maybe I could be a model," she says, dramatically throwing herself back against the mattress to mimic a corpse.
He pinches her side until she starts to squirm. "Don't do that," he says, but it's in a serious way.
She looks at the pages again more critically. The images feel too familiar. "Is this what you dream about?" She asks.
He shrugs.
There's one of her beneath the tree the careers had her trapped in. She's covered in welts from tracker jacker stings, and there's a shadow looming over her that's shaped both like a human and some kind of mutt.
"I think about it a lot," he admits. "After we had you treed, and you got away. I didn't know Rue was taking care of you. I was worried you might be passed out in a ditch somewhere, where Cato could find you. So I'd check every night for your face in the sky."
The next drawing is of a constellation of stars in the shape of an archer.
"Is that why you were murmuring my name to the stars every night?" She asks. After the Games, theyâd put together a clip package that included Peeta whispering her name in his sleep as he lay dying in a riverbank. It was another moment that felt too real to be for the cameras, if she thought about it too much.
"Probably,â he says sheepishly. âI don't remember much of that part."
She closes the book. She doesn't want to think about the Games anymore. She pulls back the blanket to make herself more comfortable.
"Are you staying?" Peeta asks.
"Is that okay?"
"Yeah, of course,â he says, pulling off his shirt as he heads into his walk in closet. âI can sleep on the floor."
"Yeah right," she says flatly.
He reappears in his sleep clothes. Their dressers are filled with fancy silk pajamas, but he always dresses in a thin tee shirt and cotton shorts. "That's what we'll tell your mother,â he explains, climbing onto the bed beside her.
"She'd never believe it. Did you know she requested birth control from the last Capitol shipment?"
"Seriously? For you?â He says with a laugh. âYou couldnât even look at a dying man without shorts on!"
âWell youâre not dying anymore,â she reminds him.
His blush that follows is unforgiving. âIâm never looking your mother in the eye again,â he says. âI think I might actually sleep on the floor.â He begins to roll away, but she catches his arm before he can get far.
âShut up and get in bed,â she says. He obliges.
Peeta turns off the remaining lights with a fancy control panel on his bedside table. Sheâs got one in her house too. Itâll open and close all the curtains, play relaxing sounds in any room in the house, and will automatically replenish certain supplies with the next shipment.
Katniss tucks herself into his waiting arms. "We're friends, right?" She says.
He pretends to think about it. "I guess so. Seeing as we've risked our lives for the other more than a few times."
"Good friends," she reiterates.
"If that's what you want to call it."
She looks up at him. It doesnât seem like the right word, but what else would she call him? Her boyfriend? Lover? Sometimes it feels like sheâs trapped in another ruthless game of sorts, but she hasnât quite figured out the rules yet. She only knows she wants to play this one good and right.
She pulls his face towards hers, their eyes stay open until the last second, and then she kisses him goodnight. From now on theyâll make their own rules.

Thank you for the prompt and your patience @thelettersfromnoone!! From December Prompts by @creativepromptsforwriting
âYou came,â Peeta has the door open before she sets foot on the porch. Heâs wearing a relieved smile, his hair disheveled in the way it gets when he canât stop raking his hands through it.
Heâd called her at 9 pm in a panic. Three weeks ago his daughter Bree had flipped through a catalog, pointed out a fairy playhouse fort and subsequently placed it at the top of her Christmas list. His nephews had asked Santa for spears and maces, so a glorified tent seemed a reasonable enough request. Or at least it was until Bree informed him that Santaâs elves made their own toys, after heâd asked her opinion on one in the window of a store they passed.
And just like that, his easy purchase had turned into a major pain in the ass. But his daughter's faith in Santa depended on it; what choice did he have.
Now after a Pinterest board, hours of planning, several trips to the hardware and craft store, heâd made his own.
Well almost made his own.
There was nowhere to hide a fully assembled fort in his home in the days leading up, so heâd had to wait until sheâd gone to bed on Christmas Eve.
He leads Katniss to the living room where the floor is a sea of mossy green and sunny yellow, âyou were right, this is really a two person job.â
Beyond discussing his project with her as a friend, he had consulted her on the structural integrity of his design as an engineer. It was a little absurd; The man created installation art for a living, but she supposed heâd never made something his child would play in. Not that she minded. She loved that he included her in his and his daughterâs lives.
She shrugs off her jacket, tossing her braid over her shoulder. âItâs a burden really; being right all the time,â she deadpans. His smile falters at her words and hers follows suit. âPeeta, Iâm joking. Iâve been offering for weeks to help. Iâm glad you called.â She grabs his arm and gives a reassuring squeeze.
In all honesty, this is the highlight of her day; Seeing him always is, but today especially. With her parents gone, and sister abroad saving lives, there had been nothing marking today as special. Sheâd Skyped with Prim for a bit but mostly lounged around the apartment alone, save the cat. Tomorrow would just be another day; made worse because Christmas fell on a Monday this year and she wouldnât even be able to have her traditional Christmas Day Chinese takeout.
âGood news! You have Santa privileges. Thereâs a plate of cookies, or carrots for the reindeer if you prefer that. And I forwent the milk in favor of hot chocolate when you agreed to come.â He leans in, dropping his voice to a conspiratorial whisper, âI even pulled the crème de menthe out for you.â
âI accept. As long as you know I would have come even without the bribe.â
They grab cookies and adjust her drink before returning to the living room to begin the fort assembly. âHow was the Mellark Christmas Eve?â
He groans.
âThat good?â
âI wish you were there. It might have been bearable if I could have watched you pretend to not be annoyed. You really should have come.â
âWow! Way to sell it. Mark me down for next year!â she says as she sorts through pieces. The last time sheâd been at a Mellark event, Peetaâs sister-in-law had cornered her, and unceremoniously told her to âshit or get off the pot.â She knew it was Enobariaâs way of looking out for Peeta and Bree, but Katniss had been offended by the implication.
She and Peeta had been friends as kids but lost touch when heâd gone abroad after graduation. Theyâd run into each other earlier this year when heâd returned to Panem with his daughter and they had slipped back into their easy friendship. She hadnât realized how much sheâd missed him.
He laughs, âIâm going to hold you to that.â
She sighs dramatically, âthen you better give me the highlights so I know what to expect.â
âNothing too dramatic, but you know Baria, she can be a bitâŚâ
âMuch?â She fills in.
He winces, âIs âintenseâ a nicer adjective?â
She hums in understanding as they work together and he regales her with tales of his sister-in-laws precisely planned itinerary. âShe's always been this way, it was just easier to handle in small doses. Now Iâm seeing them all the time. I should offer to have Christmas Eve here next year. Then Iâll just have to deal with her disapproving glower rather than her timelines. Then we got home and it took forever to get Bree to sleep. Otherwise I would have called you sooner.â
âWhat? A four year old, excited for Santa and hopped up on Christmas cookies didnât want to go to bed? That must be a first.â
âYeah, yeah, I know.â Theyâve completed the frame and begin draping the canvas and tulle covering over top, before crawling inside to tie it in place. She arranges the new pillows from Santa to complete the effect as Peeta strings the fairy lights. He really doesnât need her at this point, but sheâs glad he hasnât suggested she leave.
âAlright, moment of truth! Can I get a drumroll?â
She rolls her eyes but obliges as he counts down, â3-2-1,â He flips the switch on the battery pack and the lights twinkle on, âoh thank god!â He lets out a relieved laugh, before collapsing to the floor, rolling on his back to stare up at the lights, ânot too bad.â
She sinks to the ground to lay next to him. Itâs a snug fit with two adults; her shoulder bumps his. âPeeta, itâs perfect. Sheâs going to love it.â
âI couldnât have done it without you,â he pulls her hand to his lips, placing a kiss on the back of her hand. Their hands are still clasped when he lowers them back between them.
His hands are solid and steady, like the man himself; She yawns, lacing their fingers, âyouâll have to send me pictures of her reaction.â She didnât drink enough to be anything more than warm and tired. She tells herself sheâll just lay here for two more minutes, then head home, though she has no real desire to leave.
In her drowsy haze, she hears the clock chime; midnight.
I guess Iâm late to the game. If youâre interested, here are mine from most current and so forth with their summaries and links:

She doesnât bother knocking (they never do) as she lets herself into Peetaâs home. He's standing at the kitchen sink, unaware of her presence; She pauses in the entryway to admire him; The sunlight glinting off his golden waves. Itâs been several months since his return. Between her hunting, his baking, and Haymitchâs eggs, theyâve all put on weight; She could even swear heâs grown a couple inches.
He looks so healthy and beautiful.
She briefly contemplates creeping up behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist, breathing him in; Capturing the memory of this moment when sheâs happy and life feels good again: not perfect, but better than she could have imagined it would ever be.
But she doesnât want to risk startling him; none of them do well with that. So she clears her throat, whipping her game bag from her shoulder, and plopping it on the island.
He turns towards her with a greeting and smile and she thinks in this moment, life might be better than âgoodâ. Feeling suddenly bashful, she turns away, grabbing a glass, filling it with water, and arranging the collection of wildflowers sheâd bought in the makeshift vase. Picking them had been a small flight of fancy; the early summer blooms were so lovely, too beautiful not to share.
Upon regaining her composure she completes her task, peering up at him, âFor you.â Her smile falters at the look of intense concentration on his face.
âI gave you flowers once? Real or not real?â
Sheâs momentarily puzzled. There were plenty of bouquets on the victory tour, but those were given to them both, not from Peeta. She looks at the array of yellows, whites, purples, and pinks. Her heart sinking at the sight of the pink-and-white blooms. They transport her back to the train tracks after the first Games, when sheâd been confronted with her feelings and heâd walked away.
Stupid. How could she be so stupid?
Heâs looking at her, awaiting her answer. She swallows, âreal.â
He nods as if remembering, âon the train tracks, on our way back home, after the first Games,â his eyes flit to hers. Her mouth is dry, her tongue like lead, so she gives a quick bob of her head in affirmation.
âAnd I realized it had all been an act for the games.â
Heâs looking at the flowers again. Maybe thatâs what gives her the courage to say it, ânot all of it.â Itâs a phrase laced with implication. Heâd been too justifiably hurt the first time sheâd said it; He hadnât recognized the weight of the words, how much theyâd cost her. She hopes itâs different this time.
Their eyes meet again, before he drops his gaze back down to the flowers. âNot all of it,â he repeats in a voice hardly above a whisper.
She expects questions. She had feared what heâd ask when sheâd said it the first time, unsure if she could dissect her motivations at every decision during the course of the games; still disappointed that he hadnât given her the opportunity to try.
Silence stretches. She canât see his eyes so she watches his hands; theyâre just as telling when it comes to flashbacks. His fingers twitch, but donât clench, then they lift and she feels herself being pulled into an embrace. She relaxes. Itâs not the hug sheâd imagined earlier; itâs better; itâs real.
âThank youâ he says into her hair, but safe in Peetaâs arms, she feels like she should be the one thanking him.
