For your Monday morning I wanted to share a few more photos from the morning of the first frost a couples days ago. ••• The hardiness of some plants is remarkable. As I thought might happen, our first couple frosts were wicked hard this year, with no gradual transition to freezing temperatures — Friday night dropped to 22, and Saturday to 16. The totally burned-looking parsley recovered on Sunday and allowed for an abundant afternoon harvest. ••• Later this week after the rains we’ll be bringing in the last few harvests, including thyme, oregano, and fennel. Mark it down — first frost: October 23. Never expected it anywhere near this late, but it absolutely saved us this year having a handful more weeks to bring in the frost sensitive harvests. Still, we have a few out there to bring in. ••• Frost is so many things — from glitteringly beautiful to utterly devastating. Beauty in death. ••• As the sun rose melting the frost this morning, blissful wafts of tulsi drifted over the hill. These photos are of our frosted tulsi, which due to a variety of factors we didn’t harvest this year. I knew in August that we wouldn’t be able to get it through our dryer this year, but I let it keep growing for the bees. These things happen in farming.
