Perhaps my genuine biggest piece of socializing advice as someone who spent years of my life feeling wholly incapable of positively interacting with other people is to just ask the other person questions about themselves. Like thatâs it. People love answering questions. They really love thoughtful follow-up questions. They love feeling like someone else is interested in them, their interests, their lives, their opinions. At some point in your questioning they will say something that reminds you of a funny / interesting story. Tell it. You will be remembered as the person who asks a lot of questions, makes people feel like they matter, and tells good stories. boom. done.

Something I was thinking about with the whole âFeyre and Nesta had it easyâ thing is that we are again failing to understand Elain as a character, as an individual, and for all the shit Iâve talked about sjm in the past few days, the one thing I count on her for is to really understand her charactersâ internal lives. So here we go:
First off, SJM was listing off questions and objections from Elainâs pov. I think thatâs pretty clear. She said that as a writer she wants to explore these things, and she does so using the characters as a vehicle.
So in regards to âFeyre and Nesta had it easyâ, that is Elainâs perspective on things. Also, Feyre and Nesta got to naturally meet and get to know their mates, but Elain didnât. That right there makes it harder. Elain wasnât there for all the heartache and drama, to see how Feyre felt when she knew sheâd been lied to and that Nesta was grieving the last shred of her humanity. Elain wasnât there UtM, she doesnât know what Nestaâs experience in the Cauldron was, she doesnât understand Nesta much at all, honestly.
Of course to Elain it seems âeasyâ at this point, from her POV it seems like her sisters have everything - the high lord, the hot Illyrian dude, the houses, the friends, the mates who are right for them.
Meanwhile, Elain feels like she has lost all of that. And sheâs had nothing to replace it. She had the house, the social status, the fiancĂŠ, the future. Now itâs all gone, but meanwhile her sisters seem to have found their new places and Elain is just⌠stuck.
So when sjm says ânature chose rightâ, that is again, Elainâs current thinking of the situation. She thinks that hey, my sisters were able to make this work, but Iâm not like them at all and Iâve lost everything I worked for, so how can this possibly be right for me? Especially when everyone is shielding her from going out into the world and finding out for herself!!!
The way that sjm was talking about male characters, the main thing he needs to be is hot, and then he needs to treat his partner like an equal. Right now, Az is hot, but he is not treating Elain like an equal. Lucien is hot, and he is giving Elain space and not being a macho shithead about protecting her during the war.
Anyway this is just the beginning of my thoughts, because I think that exploring Elainâs perspective right now is actually the most interesting thing because sheâs facing the mating bond in a way that no characters have had to before! Itâs a new way of writing the same story that sjm loves - HEA, mates, and the journey is the exciting thing you get to figure out. The fact that thatâs what she talked about - Elainâs current perspective, how sheâs trying to navigate this situation - is really interesting to me. Because⌠this may be romantasy, but acotar has always been romance-forward, with mates. The question to me isnât ever really, "will these mates end up together", itâs âhow will these mates make it work?"
Also! Lucien is the only one of the males who told their mate about the bond right away. Lucien said "She's my mate" as SOON as he realized it. And obviously it came out at a time where Elain wasn't in a good place to hear it (I don't blame Lucien, it's nice that he didn't hide it from her and also I don't think he could keep it inside).
But it means that Elain is reacting against the bond being present and against Lucien. Feyre and Nesta both fell in love and then knew about the bond. The bond wasn't an obstacle to them falling in love, but it is for Elain. Because she's the only one who knows about it, for sure anyways, before falling for her mate.
I have to think that set up is intentional on SJM's part because it fits the arranged marriage trope so so well. At the very least, she's always wanted to explore a different type of mating story through Elucien.
