Me? I am General Petrine

Here’s something you don’t see often. A project that started out as a ROM hack is now going legit, and is turning to Kickstarter to see an official release.

Path of the Midnight Sun was originally called Fire Emblem: Midnight Sun, a ROM hack of Fire Emblem. Instead of pushing further with the ROM hack, the team decided to take their ideas from that game and morph it into an original IP, hence the change to Path of the Midnight Sun.

That didn’t sound like Petrine, from what she’d been told. The first issue was her saying Laguz instead of sub-humans - then again, perhaps the woman just wasn’t an idiot. Calling them sub-humans while held captive by them…Mist shuddered at the memory of Mordecai’s instinctual lashing out at Soren, fearing what could happen. She took a deep breath, calming herself and listening to what she worried over, ignoring the idea of flocking under people. If those words were coming from Petrine, then clearly she meant ‘Ashnard’. The teen wasn’t here to get in a screaming match with an enemy general. 

“I mean…she got out of the city.” She hazarded, frowning. “Nasir - he worked for us - he helped her escape. I don’t know what she’s doing now, but…she didn’t seem the type to walk into a trap. But why would Ashnard want her dead? She’s on his side!”

“I do not know who this Nasir is.” 

Petrine rebuttled. There was a great deal of hesitation now that she had spoken about it and this girl was pointing out the obvious. There was nothing she could do now to return to Ashnard’s good grace, she could return Elincia and even serve their General’s head on a platter to him and she was certain she would be struck down for her failings. A tool was only useful until it was broken. “I…” She stammered and steeled herself.

“She ceased being useful.” Her expression twist. “…He wanted me to do the deed. I…” She knew she might have done it too for her own standing but there was still a pit in her stomach over it. She wondered if she had the strength and depravity to do what others had done to her for so long.

“Dammit all.”

“We…think he was related to her, or a friend, or something.” Mist mumbled with a shrug, fidgeting with the back of the chair. Petrine was making it hard to talk to her, all awkward phrasing and leaps of judgement. As if she didn’t want to stay on one topic for too long, lest she have to say something.

Ceased being useful…? What kind of monster did she work for? And she respected this kind of man? She scowled, the teen’s glare clearly judging as she asked a question she’d had burning in the back of her mind since she’d realized who Petrine was.

This was one of those days, when the thundering of feet and hooves heralded what could only be something terrible. But he had to hold firm, defend the retreat. He had to buy time, and if it meant standing his ground against one of the Riders, then he would. 

He wheeled Haena around once, splashing the mud up before he and his steed planted firm on the road. There was only the line, and he would hold it.

Tanith kept her curt, narrow-eyed stare on Petrine’s face for a long few seconds. She tried to read what Petrine really wanted to say, the yes flickering to her mouth and eyes before eventually the commander let out a small grunt of acknowledgement, turning around in silent acceptance of her apology. She still wouldn’t let her speak harshly about her troops, but the apology had been fine, and had even given her some valuable insight into Daein’s military. 

That was how they treated their trainees, then? Belittling and scouring for the best? She’d heard that Ashnard favored strength above all else, but surely he must know that strength can be brought out of the weakest seeming soldier with enough tempering, should their soul be strong enough to withstand it. Petrine had seen dismissive of the entire class, although, granted, if Tanith’s first exposure to them had been Marcia maybe she would have shared the opinion. 

“It’s not about tolerance.” She said, voice devoid of emotion as she kept it carefully controlled. “But, yes, practices are different here. I would have thought Commander Shiharam would have told you some of our routines after he defected.”

As for what Petrine wanted to say, about the only thing Tanith might have been able to pick up was that it actually might not have been as abrasive as Tanith would have anticipated. 

“My interactions with Shiharam have been limited but why would you ever care about the opinion of a defecter?”

Petrine’s words came too easily to her lips and there seemed to be an underlaying tone of resentment. More than a decade and a half ago he had departed from his nation and pledged service but they were never able to escape the stigma of having come from another country, especially so in Ashnard’s reign.

In Petrine’s eyes though, it was a matter of conviction and the type of man she had heard Shiharam had been. It reminded her of her superior, Bryce. She supposed there was something to be said about long standing service to the nation but the nation was changing and she knew he didn’t fit the mold of it in the slightest.

He would break or he would die, she didn’t see any other recourse for him.

“Tolerence might not have been the right word.”

“Why wouldn’t I care about the words of a defector? A decade or more old or not, a high-ranking Begnion officer left our country for another. That’s something of a brutal intelligence leak.” Tanith said smoothly, eyes carefully blank. So…Ashnard’s forces hadn’t grilled him for information, then. Or maybe he had simply had the integrity to not give away too much.

Gods, she hated most of the Senate as well, but surely he could have figured something else out. She forced the thought out of her mind, inclining her head in acknowledgement with a hum.

“Perhaps. Traditions are different, after all…”

"A conversation for another time." Petrine was ready to move on from the subject, she figured she had already agitated the Deputy Commander enough with her abrasive attitude.
