While teens are sometimes dismissed as

lacking empathy due to their stage of

development, they can learn

to empathize with others.

 Teens appear to have a generally whiny reputation these days. Some call them overindulged. Others say they lack empathy and expect others to do things for them. Always, the parent takes the blame. While teens are under different stressors today, it is still important to build empathy.

 It's easy for teens to get wrapped up in their own lives and emotions. In fact, the teen years can be characterized by door slamming, yelling, eye rolling and other acts of insensitivity.

 Do we start from empathy when we set out to solve educational challenges and design learning pathways for our students?

How do we foster empathy and make it a starting point for problem solving and the design of new solutions for both ourselves and for our students?

 Empathy over sympathy Lately it seems all roads lead to empathy:   

Tony Wagner in Creating Innovators identifies empathy as a necessary characteristic for innovators;  

 David Kelly of Stanford University identifies empathy as the starting point for all problem solving;  

 Daniel Goleman states leaders with empathy do more than sympathize with people around them: they use their knowledge to improve their companies in subtle, but important ways.

solving problems responsively and

meaningfully, empathy is an

underpinning for connection

Linda Darling-Hammond is the Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education at Stanford University’s School of Education and author of more than a dozen books and 300 articles on educational reform, teacher professionalization, and equity. She has won numerous awards for her research and contributions to policy and practice. Linda worked closely with candidate Barack Obama to shape educational policy and today is working with Gov. Jerry Brown in California to revitalize that state’s once-glorious educational system. Linda is a champion of teachers and the teaching profession. Chances are you, or your parents, were brought up as part of a generation that was told “If you’re going to cry, you can go outside”. Today’s society is far more understanding of emotions – both our own and other people’s. But this kind of ‘emotional intelligence’ doesn’t come naturally to all of us. While some seem to be born with a natural affinity for caring and understanding other people, others find matters of the heart awkward, preferring to keep a lid on the whole messy business.

 No matter our natural disposition, empathy is one skill that can be learned and as parents, we play an important role in teaching our children.

 So where do we begin?

 Name the feeling...

It’s good to talk about feelings...

Praise your child when they show empathy...

Talk about feelings as actions..

Encourage your child to think of others..
