Welcome to the Fortnite Halloween Party Event! 

The panicked voice immediately rung in her ears, and Red sat right up when she saw none other than an anxiety-ridden Ikonik come shuffling in. “Wha- Ikonik! I, uh…” She seemed at a loss for words when a huge vase of roses suddenly made itself present in her field of vision, and her still-frozen cheeks turned hot with a rosy blush. How sweet was he to- Oh god he was about to start crying.

“Look, I’m better now. See?” She forced a smile, but it didn’t do anything to distract her from the pain persistent in her gut. Trying to sell the charade, Red pulled back the blankets and showed him the blood-spotted bandages wrapped around her abdomen. “I got the icicle out, and Field Surgeon said it wasn’t infected..which is a miracle. Seriously, I’m fine!”

Upon Red positioning herself up to reveal a tightly gauzed stomach, Ikonik couldn’t help but bristle, his hand flying up to his face. “Red… I couldn’t imagine what you went through….” he softly gasped. “Icicle?! Were you impaled?!” He knew that Red was badly injured by the information he got from people out in the front door (There was a lot), but he had no idea it was something like this. “W-what happened?” 

The more he asked about her condition, the harder Red found it to piece together a tangible sentence—especially with the beads of tears running down Ikonik’s cheeks. She felt her chest throb with a pang of guilt, mouth dry, throat tight trying her best to keep it together. The ginger steadied herself with a breath, and then swinging her legs around moved to the edge of the bed with a low grunt.

“Yeah,” she nodded, “I fell from the top of Polar Peak and landed in a pretty bad spot. I won’t say why I was up there in the first place, but… Well, the important part is I got out in one piece with some help.”

It hurt to look at his worried face; why was he so concerned? It wasn’t like she’d been game-ended or anything. One Chug Jug a day and some painkillers, and the wound could heal itself in no time if she didn’t screw with it much. But that didn’t deter him—and apparently a lot of other people—from worrying about her.

She dropped her head. “Ikonik, cut it out. I’m gonna be fine! You’ll see me running around Neo Tilted with a pickaxe and an assault rifle in a week, maybe three days from now. It’s all good, okay?” Her foot hit the cold tile floor, and her back arched reflexively to the pain as she pulled herself up, a little wobbly at first considering it’d been so long since the last time she actually stood on her own. Red Knight reached forward, and careful not to agitate herself nor Ikonik gently pulled him into a consoling hug, one hand resting on the nape of his neck, the other around his waist.

Upon feeling Red wrap her arms around him, a dozen thoughts swirled around his head, all very vivid, raw, and too familiar. He glanced down at the bandages intertwined with a lavender hospital gown, and the sight of blood took him back to a memory that he was sure that he tucked away in the deepest depth of his mind. A knife. A wound. Screaming. Blame. Loneliness.

Ikonik gripped the side of his head, blinking away hot new tears streaming down his face. No, not again. The thought of his new friend experiencing pain at a higher level than usual was so unbearable, as he was sure it wasn’t the last time it was going to happen. Red’s voice rung out against his clouded mind, which snapped him back to reality. “Y-yeah,” he croaked out, uncertainty in the tone of his voice. He fought to stifle tears as he gingerly enveloped her with a tight hug of his own.

“I just... I don’t know if you can promise that.” Usually, a blunt response like that was avoided in his speech, but he had to state that, lest he wasn’t able to ever again. Swallowing some choice words, he tucked his face into the crook of her neck. “Especially from a place like this,” Ikonik added so softly, that only he could hear it. Red is brave and she is a true fighter, and Ikonik had to remember that, but even so, he felt that he should have done something, as impossible as that was.
