For the Love of Pattern

Wong Kar-Wai’s Film ‘In the mood for love’ is one of my favourite visual inspiration references. The prints and colour palettes are beyond dreamy. At some point I plan to devote an entire post to this movie. In the meantime this video is a little study of the Director’s film techniques throughout a few of his films.

A convergence of Art and Science would best describe Goodsell.  An Associate Professor of molecular biology at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, his intricate watercolour illustrations paint the invisible complexities of life inside a cell. Seeking to convey the beauty within natures tangled biochemical processes. Some of his subject matters include a larger than life macrophage devouring an invading bacterium, a cancer cell marching through a thick forest of collagen, and the HIV virus, travelling silently through the bloodstream undetected by the immune system. I remember studying his work at university and it’s forever stayed with me as an inspiring reminder of the power and beauty within our molecular makeup.

Burcu & Geoffrey - beautiful animators.

An animated short film documentary created by Saul Bass and Mayo Simon in 1968. The film discusses the 'Nature of creativity,' the opening cartoon sequence is a delight that continues to inspire designers today.

Diana Vreeland  (1903-1989) was a famous character and editor in the field of fashion. She worked for magazines Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. Later becoming a special consultant at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I recently watch the documentary ‘Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel.’ Very interesting and inspiring look into a woman who gave so much to the fashion world. Her quotes on life are delightful '“A little bad taste is like a nice splash of paprika. We all need a splash of bad taste—it’s hearty, it’s healthy, it’s physical. I think we could use more of it. No taste is what I’m against.”

Memphis was a design collective that dominated the early 1980s scene with its postmodern style. Established in 1981 by Ettore Sottsass, the group consisted of international architects Martine Bedin, Aldo Cibic, Michele De Lucchi, Matteo Thun, Marco Zanini and later George Snowden and Nathalie du Pasquier. They experimented with unconventional materials, forms, colour and kitsch. Resulting in a gaudy bright aesthetic, radically different to the more restrained modernist style that dominated the interior design world. It responded perfectly to the post punk pop culture of the time.
