his breathing is heavy as he tries to calm his body enough so that it doesn’t feel like he’s dying. he listens to the soft-spoken words, trying his best to process them. but it’s the signing that catches his attention.
he . . . he knows that. in command track at the academy, he’d taken a class in intergalactic sign language. of course, this planet hadn’t had contact with the federation, so he can’t be certain they use the same version. but still — it’s familiar.
trust me, he thinks. is that what he’s saying? regardless, it’s what he’ll do. it’s not like he has another choice.

jim is incredibly disoriented. he landed his ship just a little ways away in a large clearing. it was an easy landing on what seemed like a peaceful countryside at the time. but as soon as he called out to greet a stranger down the path, he’d been charged at & tackled. now, he’s being led . . . to who knows where.
he’d struggled against the man for a moment until he saw it — a monster. his eyes had gone wide & now, here he is. hiding behind a building with the stranger who’d tackled him down. for good reason, it seems.
looking at the man with frantic eyes, he glances back toward the direction of the beast, as if to ask what the hell is going on.
“ shh, it’s okay. “ he can’t-- this guy can’t just . . he’s scared, more than anything, and the beast he’s staring at is looking around as if it can see them. “ i don’t know your name, but i’m lee, okay? i don’t know how you got down here, but you need to be quiet. “ he whispers as quiet as he can, signs trust me when he turns him around. fear. but he won’t let this stranger die.

HEAVY BREATHING, HAND CLASPED OVER THIS STRANGER’S MOUTH, lee has to wonder just what this man is doing here. appeared right out of the sky as if he was a martian, some kind of UFO, disrupting everything lee has done to protect himself.
right now, though, lee is moving him behind a building & hushing him, trying to encourage low, even breaths. “ it’s okay, you’re safe. i won’t hurt you. you need to be quiet. please be quiet. everything is okay. “ ( faintly, he can remember saying these exact same things to his son. but that’s a life he doesn’t want to remember, & so he won’t. )
