Illustration of a large flying fox or Kalong by Gustav Mützel, 1894. Source: New York Public Library Digital Collections. Also known as the Malayan flying fox, Malay fox-bat and large fruit bat, its scientific name is 𝑃𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑢𝑠 𝑣𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑦𝑟𝑢. Despite that terrifying species name, though, it feeds exclusively on fruits, nectar, and flowers, like the other flying foxes of the genus Pteropus. It is very large, one of the largest bats in the world, and can have a wingspan of up to 1.5m or nearly five feet. While it is not a blood-sucking vampire as its scientific name implies, the large flying fox has found deadly infamy as a natural reservoir of the Nipah virus, an outbreak of which led to 108 deaths in Malaysia in 1998. Infected fruit bats may shed the virus onto fruit trees or animal feed in areas where pigs are raised, or pigs can become infected by eating fruits contaminated with bat saliva or urine.
