Fork In The Crossorads is exactly that, a split in an already split path. Given the amount of AU's I tend to cook up, some of which branch off of each other, it seems to fit.

ooof, I'll be glad when the tumblr security staff scam is done, for a moment I thought some random weirdo managed to find my blog.
Not that I mind having followers or conversation, but in this era yeesh there can be some real dickheads online. Plus I'm pretty sure the recent followers I've had in the past were here for hate following more than anything else, since they had only responded to negative posts instead of anything I made related to fic or AUs -- like say you hate individuality without saying you hate individuality, amirite?
Anyway I just don't need that kind of toxicity here. "Better to be alone than in bad company" as the saying goes.
Instead of worrying about whether or not I want to reblog my art form main to here or from here to main, I'll just upload them to both accounts to save me the headache.
That aside, I had been messing with how Occulomata!KARR looks when he's in flight, since his form changes shape in order to facilitate it easier. A good portion of his ability to defy gravity does have to do with electromagnetic fields, wherein a field is projected around his body in order to lower the drag of his plating (especially at mach speeds) and help with lift -- relying on his wings alone is not enough to counteract the weight of him.
In earlier versions I had posted I had thought of making him super aerodynamic and jet-like for the whole flight thing, but lately I had been thinking about leaning more towards something more surreal/sci-fantasy. So instead of him forcing his body to completely change for the sake of lift, it's one part lift and other part is electromagnetic fields to defy Earth's gravitational pull. But! I do like the details of making the nose a bit longer and sharper and flaring out the plating of portions of the tail to help with maneuvering/lift.
The face itself I moved more towards older depictions of dragons in medieval manuscripts, since Occulomata!KARR is supposed to be a little bit of a parallel to them in his role in Black UFO, he is the dragon guarding the princess/prince (Garthe) locked in the tower, razing villages to the ground to claim his territory and leaves the land in disarray and fear with his presence. He is a calamity and a force of nature that the country he invades does not know how to handle and so is powerless to stop him. I wanted that sort of reflected in his flying form.
As for the eyes, I could not decide whether to leave them alone or to have them morph into something more insectoid that could handle the velocity of his flight without collapsing. I have a third idea that I want to explore but that will be a bit later, I'll probably try it out when I'm messing with how his plating looks while in his flying mode since I'm not fully satisfied with this design.

Thinking about Strix some more, because tiny bastard aircraft/space alien has been on my brain lately.
under a cut due to it being long.
As an Occulomata, I figure that Strix's role before being captured, kept imprisoned and used as essentially a resource bin for engineering experiments, would have been some sort of saboteur/reconnaissance/spy type role.
All Occulomata started their existence as war machines in what had started as a cyclical series of conflicts between several warring factions of extraterrestrials at a far flung corner of the universe (with the exception of Ahye, whom had appeared in the void around the same time as the big bang and is the first Occulomata and is agreed to be something of an eldritch machine god/deity). As the wars carried on over thousands of years, it changed from the Occulomata being used for war to them unionizing and flipping the conflict into a civil war/revolt between them and the extraterrestrials that used them.
War is too deeply ingrained into them for their bodies to adapt to anything else at this point. It would take equally several thousands or millions of years for them to essentially deprogram from their military role, even though collectively Occulomata have moved on from war as a new society.
Strix is no different in this regard, their form is best suited for essentially infiltrating enemy territory, messing with and disabling enemy weaponry and equipment, gathering intel, etc. Stealth is a big part of their function, as is electromagnetic field manipulation and extra/interdimensional travel. They can cross the divide between different parallel universes as well as dimensions beyond human comprehension (ie: 5th dimensional spaces), create pocket dimensions and enter them. The former is how Strix ended up in the same universe as modern Earth around the late 1960's/early 1970's. Despite their abilities, Strix's purpose in the known universe was not for war or conquest, they arrived for research purposes regarding what was in those universes that were parallel to their own. Earth has no rare elements or resources that Occulomata would be after, but humanity is far from subtle in their presence in their universe.
Between stray radio frequencies, light pollution, and space trash left over from the race to the moon that managed to escape earth's gravitational pull and fly out into space, Strix had an easy time finding Earth.
With that being said, Strix should have been advanced enough to never have fallen into human captivity. Unless, of course, Murphy's Law takes effect while approaching earth and a passing piece of space rock collides with Strix and sends them plummeting unconscious through the atmosphere. In this state Strix's form reflexively curls in on itself to prevent injury, and on impact molten stone solidified against Strix's plating and made them resemble a space rock. While knocked out and vulnerable, Strix is found either by Wilton or some other company that Wilton was working with at the time to make his AI, assumed that he found a cool space boulder, did not report it, and later figured out it was actually an extraterrestrial and could be used to make super advanced computers.
Later on Venetatio comes to modern Earth's universe looking for Strix after they had not reported any updates to their journey in a long while.
Strix posting again, this time about an idea regarding how they fit into the Black UFO AU. Under a cut because it got long.
I've decided that the way Knight Industries made their AIs for this AU is by taking bits of brain matter from the space alien Wilton has in the basement somewhere, and using it for their AI hardware. The majority of thought and reasoning comes from that brain matter, the only human programming comes from writing the code for the directives and some restrictive parameters to keep the AI in check.
Occulomata processors are highly versatile and adaptable, capable of parsing new information that is alien to them without much external help. Slapping some human coding in there is enough without having to write an entirely new operating system. Wilton and his engineering team figures this out and he realizes he's sitting on a tech goldmine.
However, if the modified processor comes in contact with another Occulomata, they can liberate the cognitive functions of that processor from the human-made restrictions. This is how Occulomata!KITT and Occulomata!KARR were able to be converted from an AI housed in a vehicle into their own beings - they had always been Occulomata in this AU. In the case of Venetatio's involvement, the personalities and memories of those two individuals were maintained. Those parts were naturally developed and not human made, the only portions that were stripped from them were their directives and restrictions.
So, technically Occulomata!KITT no longer has the altruistic directive for preserving human life baked into him, he chooses it. Occulomata!KARR is not a product of his core programing either, his choices are based on his experiences and the methods he chooses to cope. The same can be assumed for Occulomata!KRO as well. Strix however is an outlier.
Strix never meets Venetatio, Strix finds the space alien in the basement on their own and connects with it. Because Strix's CPU is the same Occulomata hardware that came from the alien, Strix essentially gets absorbed back into the captive alien. They are not deleted, but they are not a separate being within the alien's mind either. Strix and the captive alien are the same being, the alien is Strix and Strix is the alien. Strix has the memories from when they had been housed in the aircraft, and they also have their memories from when they had been traveling the stars as an Occulomata, along with the eons of memories of war, conquest, and revolution.
In a sense it's like the conspiracy about the whole berenstain vs berenstein thing that popped up a decade or so back, where two universes had collided and merged into each other but that book title was the only tell for it. Everything else remained the same.
Strix recognizes their old aircraft chassis, remembers being in it, but the Occulomata had always been who they were. Reuniting with their captive form is them coming home.
And then they break out of containment and raze everything to the ground during the escape, as a newly freed captive alien does.
Given Strix is interested in reabsorbing the stolen parts of their processor, Occulomata!KITT and Occulomata!KARR have a very good reason to avoid meeting them at all in the Black UFO AU.
Meanwhile, Occulomata!KRO and Martin are trying to get to the bottom of what exactly Knight Industries and FLAG had been doing regarding hijacking alien technology for their own purposes, and likely will be the first ones to meet the space alien Wilton conveniently left chained up in the basement after he died.
In fact, they probably would make it to FLAG just in time to see Strix bursting out of the estate like a phoenix of pure hatred.

Some part of me looks at mechnophilia/objectum fetishes and goes "there's something so fucking american about a person that wants to fuck vehicles that it borders on satire."
Something something USA culture is deeply married to cars and the military, something something Uncle Sam absolutely does want you to stick your dick in the car and/or fighter jet because it's good for the economy or some shit like that.

nobody tells you this but youre genuinely just allowed to draw yourself as a giant creature doing some jurassic park type shit to your favorite characters. im revolutionizing the self-insert game
Part of me wishes TKR put some budget into making an interesting dashboard/interface layout for the vehicles. That little spinning 3d model of the vehicle turning green and red does absolutely nothing for me.
idk it just gives amusement park car-on-rails ride instead of the interface of a highly advanced piece of equipment. It cheapens the idea instead of selling it like the first show did.
Show me hundreds of blinky lights and buttons, make that machine look like a person needs extensive training to operate that thing. Show me that this machine is the most sophisticated piece of engineering ever.
Continuing on this because I'm not done gnawing on this horse carcass.
I notice in this show they focus on the little spinning car thing on the screen instead of showing the whole dashboard/interior like in the first show. That right there shows me they did not put any funds towards the vehicles being their own characters (aside from maybe the motorcycles, but that was more for the merge-two-bikes-into-car-thing schtick.)
With KITT they wanted the audience to see all the workings even with a limited budget in the first season, the show's team were proud of the vehicle, they wanted it to be a character. They turned the vehicle into it's own type of person, living and breathing in the way that 80's tech and movie magic allowed (I'm pretty sure that's why KITT is appealing in his own right aside from his personality).
Anyway I fucking hate the dashboard layout, the way it's shot, the fact that the framing in the show always was trying to hide they replaced the dashboard bits behind the steering wheel with whatever this is. Fisher-price spy car aesthetic. Seven buttons, all for talking to the other cars and nothing else. Ew.
Pretty sure with the spinning model I couldn't tell if the AI was talking or if the team were talking on a phone half the time when I first came across this show blind.
I want to draw KRO, but just the interior. I want to figure out how to design vehicle interiors so he can at least look like a precursor to the team vehicles AND a model that was intended to replace KITT.
