I decided to start a series of graphic design posters for TOS episodes in “if those were films” style also reflecting the mood or genre of the episode. I will try to make as many as possible/to almost every episode of TOS, but I’ll skip the episodes I hate (sorry, but no Spock’s Brain poster).
First one (because I am rewatching the series in a production order), Where No Man Has Gone Before — science fiction drama.
Below is the dismissed/first version, which I was told is looking too much like a poster to Marvel film (which isn’t exactly saying drama) + my thought process.
Rewatching the episode I’ve noticed a few things: I think the episode perfectly adds up to the rest of the series as an introduction, or a prequel. The first working days of Kirk with Spock. First time playing chess together to get to know each other better. First casualty that hit close. Days, when Kirk was having (other) close friend, before he learned to understand Spock, by also calling him heartless, but being able to still show more understanding to him, and Spock still being careful and private about his life, by even not telling that he’s a half human and leaning even more on his alien side.
Also I have noticed by the second rewatch how much angst Kirk has in the episode regarding Gary. How worried and dreary he looks. Even the ending is shot in a way that is reminiscent of “a lone soldier after the battle” — Kirk won, but he looks almost defeated. So the episode felt very sad. Gary’s confused and fearful “Jim?” when for a second he regains his humanity…
So I wanted to reflect this melancholy in my poster.
A few weeks ago I had a dream that there was a 4th season of Star Trek: Picard where Khan, played by George Takei, is trying to kill Old Man Picard because he's in love with him, and also Picard is the Pope for some reason.
I figure it would make a much better Khan audio drama than that thing we're getting. It could star Brent Spiner's Patrick Stewart impression as Pope Jean Luc I, and George Takei as Khan.
