HOUSE MORCANT OF NORDHELM
Every child in the known world knows the story of Morcant and how he came to be the first King of Varhild. How his brothers, the Five Sand Kings, tore apart their father Harren the Conqueror’s legacy but shied away from the wild and feral land of Varhild. Too much trouble, they said. The kingdom would cause it’s ruler nothing but misery. So when Morcant asked for it, saying that he would take what his trueborn brothers would not, they laughed at him. They laughed as their father gave his blessing to Morcant’s wish. They laughed as Morcant gathered men who would go on the journey with him. They even laughed when Morcant married a Varish princess. But when they saw their brother thriving in his chosen hell, then they stopped laughing and started envying him. They tried to take his inheritance from him, but Morcant fought each wave off. In the end, the Sand Kings’ envy was what crowned their brother and solidified his line.
Now, the Sand Kingdoms have crumbled into countless pieces while Morcant’s inheritance remains.
Descended from Morcant himself, the house of his descendants have a great and colorful history. But it has been been tainted of late by the recent rush of civil wars for succession. Starting with the Three Hundred Days war of King Einon, leaning up to the brewing war between his grandchildren. Ruling for more than 500 years at their crown hold in Nordhelm, the Morcants have always been known to produce fairly strong personalities and quick tempers, but they’ve never yielded results such as these. Now, they seem to be cursed with kinslaying and familial disputes which the kingdom has begun to call the Wars of the Lions, after the family’s well-known sigil.Â
Because of these wars, a new saying has become popular in Varhild: The kingdom bleeds when a lion roars.Â

ERENA MORCANT (Clemence Poesy)
No Morcant will suffer being denied what is rightfully theirs, and a Morcant, Erena certainly is. With the Blood of the Conqueror flowing through her veins and the validity of her cause strengthening her resolve, Erena bears an iron will that has sharpened like a blade, cutting down anything that stands between her and her father’s inheritance. A woman born into the throws of war, living most of her life under the shadow of it, she has no illusions about what it will take for her to win the crown. She will have to wade through blood and sacrifice before securing her throne, but she comforts herself with the fact that the throne is everything and thus is worth anything.

A bastard born under unique circumstances, Bracken Morcant, formerly known as Bracken Morcantson, boasts more of the Conqueror’s blood in his veins than his trueborn sibling. With a Morcant for a father and a Gerwolfe for a mother, he is the union of two of the most powerful Heraxian bloodlines in the Known World. Because of this, many call him Morcant reborn. In truth, though, he has no ambition in him to be king. He never meant to grasp at the crown. But his father gave it to him on his deathbed; Evoric entrusted his bastard son with the legacy 500 years in the making. It does not take ambition to make a Morcant think that he will not be denied what is truly his.
EVELYN MORCANT (Julie Delpy)
Evelyn gambled and she’d lost. She’d tried to fight for Ostend’s children, she raised the Eastermarch in the name of her brother Ostend’s children, and yet Evoric still won. If that were not enough, her own husband had to betray her, surrendering the cause in the name of House Redayne, even allowing for their daughters to be warded off to Evoric’s allies like pieces of coin to be paid to creditors. Since then, Evelyn has lived like a prisoner in her own home. Hate grows in seclusion, and it is even suspected that she poisoned her husband when he died two years ago, just to free herself and finally make her move towards retribution. Had Erena and Bracken been on the same side, perhaps she would not be as confident as she is now, but her dear brother Evoric had seen to it that they would be ripped apart. Now, it is time for Ostend’s daughter to make her bid for the throne. She will not fail Ostend’s blood a second time.

Once a princess of Nordhelm, now it’s prisoner. Cecily Morcant lost everything to the Second War of the Lions. Her father and brothers died reaching for the crown that was rightfully theirs. Her mother was taken from her, sent to live under the watch of House Osrell because the new king, Cecily’s uncle Evoric, thought her too dangerous to be left at large. Meanwhile, Cecily is meant to live in the company of those who have authored the demise of her family. But only a fool would throw stones in a lion’s den. And Cecily is no fool. She bows, she smiles, she thanks them for their kindness, and she acts every bit the part of the grateful captive, but inside she cannot wait to see them all pay for what they’ve done. It is easy to forget that a sleeping lion is still a lion. And with the chaos now brought about by her uncle Evoric’s decisions, the sleeper will awaken.
