The Wedding Part 1 (Serena’s POV)
Rei slings open silk white curtains, revealing reflections from the moon kingdom’s city lights. I roll over covering my head with my blanket, not wanting to believe that the day has finally come that my love marries another.
“Come on, Serena. It’s time,” Rei walks over to my bed and pulls the covers completely off of me.
“What do you think you’re doing?” I bolt upright and glare at her. Her hair is split into two long braids rolling over her shoulders, with beads of red and white wrapping throughout them. Her gown is a deep red clinging to every part of her body from her collar bones to her knees, then it trails into a blood red lace flowing to the ground. Her shoes are black with a four inch heel.
“It’s time to get dressed.” She places a hand on her right hip and puts her weight mostly on her right leg as she scowls back at me.
“I’m not going. You don’t need me there.” I lay my head back against my pillow, covering my face.
“You don’t have a choice. Imagine what Darien would think if you don’t show up?”
I hear the click of Rei’s heals coming closer to me, so I roll to the other side of the bed pulling the pillow with me.
“You’re the worst!” Rei stomps out of the room, and I sigh with relief. We haven’t fought like this in years, so having this conversation makes my heart feel lighter already. I miss those days we spent on Earth. I miss how genuine my friends were with me then.
Ever since coming back to the Moon kingdom, it has been a series of “your highness this” and “you majesty that”. I can’t take it anymore.
I hear the door to my room open again, but this time the steps are lighter and don’t make the clicking sound of heals.
“Mama. You have to get up now.” I lift my head to see Small Lady dressed in a light pink gown that touches the edges of her shoulders and flows to her feet. Small pink diamonds glisten along the collar bone and the top of her light pink gloves. Her hair is in those familiar high pig tails, with curls flowing to her lower back. A white crow with pearls and diamonds interlaced sits atop her beautiful head.
She has grown so much over the years. The last time I remember her being on Earth was when she came from the future. At that time she was stuck in a child’s body, but now she has grown to maturity as a tall, beautiful young lady.
“You look beautiful, darling.” I sit up in the bed and smile at what Darien gave me all those years ago.
“Thank you, but you look terrible. You should brush your hair and get dressed already or we’ll be late.” She looked confused as she nears the bed.
“I don’t feel so great. I think I’m going to stay in bed today.”
“Mama, what’s wrong? Do I need to send for the royal doctor?” Rini places a hand to my forehead and shakes her head. “You don’t feel warm.”
“I just need to rest, is all.”
Rini takes my hand in hers as she sits down on the bed beside me.
“Mama, all those stories you used to tell me when I was just a little girl...” She looks towards the windows. “Were any of them true?”
I’m taken aback at first, not knowing how to respond.
I sigh, then smile at her with a tear forming in my left eye. “Yes, dear.”
She looks back at me and tears glisten in her eyes as well. I can feel her hand shaking as she leans in to give me a hug. She buries her head into my chest and I stroke her pink hair gently.
“He loved you once before. You need to know that.”
Rini lifts her head to look me in the eyes. “Does he know?”
“I’m afraid it’s more complicated than that, my love.” I can see that she’s getting upset. I couldn’t bare losing my only child and the man I love on the same day. “We can talk about this more later. I need to get dressed.”
I move away from her and walk towards my bedroom closet.
I hear Rini’s footsteps retreat to the door quickly, and slam it on her way out.
