From Poughkeepsie to New Netherland
My Connection to Dr. Gysbert van Imbroch
By Kevin Shannon
There’s something powerful about tracing your family line back far enough that history stops feeling abstract—and starts feeling personal.
In my case, that journey led me to a 17th-century Dutch doctor living in what is now Kingston, New York.
His name was Gysbert van Imbroch, and he is my 8th great-grandfather.
🧬 The Connection
My lineage to Dr. van Imbroch runs through a long line of Hudson Valley families:
Shannon
Conklin
Ricker
Van Keuren
Van Amburgh / Van Emburgh
These families anchor my ancestry firmly in the region I still call home. The line ultimately traces back to early Dutch settlers in New Netherland.
Dr. van Imbroch sits at the top of that line—living in the mid-1600s, when this area was still a frontier settlement.
🏛️ Life in Early Kingston
Dr. van Imbroch lived in Wiltwyck (modern-day Kingston, New York), one of the earliest European settlements in the region.
At the time:
Kingston was a fortified village
Surrounded by wilderness and Native lands
Constantly under threat during conflicts like the Esopus Wars
He worked as a barber-surgeon, a profession that combined:
Medicine
Dentistry
Minor surgery
In a frontier settlement, this made him an essential figure—part doctor, part emergency responder, and part community lifeline.
⚔️ Family and Conflict
Dr. van Imbroch was married to Rachel de la Montagne, a member of another prominent New Netherland family.
During the turmoil of the 1660s, Rachel was captured during an attack associated with the Second Esopus War.
She was taken prisoner during the conflict
Later ransomed and returned to the Dutch settlement
This episode highlights just how dangerous life was in early Kingston. Families were not just witnesses to history—they were directly caught up in it.
⚔️ A Life Cut Short
Dr. van Imbroch died on August 29, 1665, at a relatively young age.
His life overlapped directly with the aftermath of the Esopus conflicts, a period marked by instability, disease, and hardship.
📜 A Remarkable Inventory
One of the most fascinating pieces of history he left behind is his estate inventory, preserved today in Ulster County records.
This document gives us a rare, detailed glimpse into daily life in 1665.
His possessions included:
Medical instruments
Books (a sign of education and status)
Household goods
Clothing and linens
Tools and supplies
This wasn’t just a list of items—it was a snapshot of a life.
It tells us:
He was educated
He was established in the community
He lived with a level of comfort uncommon for the time
For me, this is where genealogy becomes real. This wasn’t just a name in a tree—this was a working professional with a home, a livelihood, and a place in his community.
🏠 The House That Still Stands
Even more remarkable: the world he lived in hasn’t completely disappeared.
In Kingston, New York, parts of the old Dutch settlement still stand—especially in the historic Stockade District.
Stone houses from the 1600s remain, built in the same style and period as those that would have surrounded Dr. van Imbroch.
While we can’t say with certainty which structure was his, we can stand in those streets today and know:
This is the environment he lived in
These are the kinds of homes he walked past
This is where his life unfolded
That kind of continuity is rare—and powerful.
🧠 Why This Matters to Me
Living in the Hudson Valley, I’ve always had an interest in local history—especially the early Dutch period.
But discovering that I am directly descended from someone who lived through it changes everything.
It transforms history from:
Something I read about ➡️ into something I’m part of
🎤 Closing Thought
“From modern-day Poughkeepsie back to 17th-century New Netherland, my family line connects me directly to one of the earliest documented settlers of the Hudson Valley—a doctor whose life, work, and possessions still echo through history.”
