A question that often gets asked. Sometimes I even find myself asking it. As a teenager I left my home town in Oregon with a backpack and stuck out my thumb to follow the hippie trails. Starting with rainbow gatherings (and bunch of dirty hippies in the woods for those who don’t know) I eventually graduating to following concert tours such as the remaining Grateful Dead members and Phish. For more than a decade I roamed the country taking in the sights and experimenting with various drugs (don’t bother if you havnt already). I started with my own two feet and eventually traversed the continent by bus, plane, train, car, truck, motorhome, and motorcycle. I began spending most of my time on the east coast because there was more concerts to attend and shorter distances to travel in order to get to them. I did odd jobs during the winter season and soon began working for vendors selling food, Tshirts, and bumper stickers at the concerts to support my traveling lifestyle in the summer. One winter I spent at sea working the deck of a north Atlantic fishing Vessel called the Suzane Beth. We lived on the boat at a dock in Cape May NJ where we would drink heavily fight with the locals. We would go out to sea for a week at a time fishing 200 miles off shore for loligo squid. Eventually after a brush with the law I moved back home to Eugene Oregon where I held my first full time wage job at a local fish market and resteraunt called Fishermans Market. I worked there for just over a year before I quit. I had become fed up with the slow paced medical Marijuana lifestyle which people seem to flock to the west coast in order to embrace and once again set my sights on the road deciding to head east. I sank my life savings into collectable lapel pins which were becoming a popular fad at jamband concerts. One pin of my own design enjoyed a short run of cult phenomenon popularity and the proceeds paved the way for many of my current endevors. After a year of back on the road I became bored with the scene I had spent so much of my life being a part of as many of my dearest friends had vanished either moving on in life or being consumed by tragedy. I could no longer relate to the new younger crowd around me and was not really in to the music being peddled in that genre any longer and decided I would much rather see Lady Gaga perform live than STS9 or String Cheese Incident. Ever since I set foot on the east coast at age 18 I had landed over and over again in the state of Pennsylvania and through the years established deeper roots here than I had back home aside from my family. I always loved the city of Philadelphia with its wild and untamed gritty streets, extrordinary architecture, amazing food, and rich culture. I often say that Philly reminds me of the campground at a giant music festival with all sorts of people peddling things to one another and mixing about waiting for the show they came there to see. After living so many years on the road it seemed only natural to decide to apply my experience with vending at large events as a means to survive. That is how Flying Eye Trading Company LLC was born but that is an entirely different story.

A Changing Philadelphia, The site of the new casino build on 8th and market. A whole block of small electronics stores and dollar discount shops razed to the ground to make way for a posh new casino in center city. This promises to create a very different asthetic on east side of Market street which only blocks away is still home to a good number of check cashing spots, methadone clinics, and street merchants selling scented oils and watches. Most people will welcome the changes and I am not here to cry out against them. I merely see it as a changing of the times but being a soldier of these same streets cannot help but feel a sense of loss for the unique and gritty character of Philadelphia's urban center.

Philadelphia Street Hustle As long as I have been coming to Philadelphia I remember seeing little stands on the side of the road selling belts, phone chargers, watches, and purses. They are as much apart of philadelphia as the cheese steak. I never knew that one day I would own one of these stands. This may be the begining of the end though as center city pushes north and the real estate moguls transform more of Philadelphia into a playground for rich people. Vendors seem to be persona non grata lately with ramped up harassment by the parking authority and L+I. Spring Garden may soon fall to condo set and we may be chased further up the L tracks.

My name is Adam I love Zebras, Rock and Roll music, designer sunglasses and Lady Gaga. I was born in the state of Oregon but currently reside in Philadelphia PA. I am a street merchant with a sidewalk vending permit through the city. I run a merchant stand by a subway stop on Spring Garden st. I travel to flea markets in the surrounding area on weekends and I also service a small coin op candy machine route locally which donates to charity. In my youth I taveled throughout much of the continental United States following the jamband music scene only to discover that that only good jamband was the Grateful Dead and their lead singer had been dead for twenty years. After sampling the highs and lows of a life on the road for more than a decade I settled in the City of Brotherly Love and founded Flying Eye Trading Company LLC. a one stop sidewalk shop for fashion & urban survival needs. This is the story of my battle to change from a warrior of the Road to a King of the streets.
