I honestly didn't think I'd have a medal to show at the end of what was one of the toughest races I'd ever run. The two oceans half marathon was one of my primary goals for 2016 and it was one I agonized over endlessly. But I put in the work, running every spare minute I had. The race was a story in itself. A rainy start and a twisted knee the day before already had me slightly panicked. Then at 12 km, the cut off bus passed me on the grueling Southern Cross drive. I remember reading a story about a woman who spent the entire race trying to get away from that bus. With a massive hill and 9 km left I was ready to give up. And then...something intense and inexplicable happened. I found the energy to pass the cut off bus and ran faster than I've ever even trained. At the 16th km, I was on 6:32/km, which is unheard of for me. All the way, I kept wishing it would end. I thought about my goal, my husband and my daughter. At the 19th km, I knew I was going to make it. I hit the grass of UCT's rugby field with 16 minutes to spare until the cut off. Insane and against many odds...I feel incredible.

One year and a baby later. This was a tough race.
