Also, what inspired you to make Oliver trans? Did you have anybody specific you based that on? (Asking as a trans guy that was helped a lot in their gender journey by simply enjoying Oliver as a character)

I absolutely didn't intend for Randy to be transfem but I really do see why people hc it. Having thought about it, it does make genuine sense to me.

Also, good question on Oliver. I guess I just pictured him that way from almost the get-go. As soon as I started fleshing him out beyond a placeholder name + occupation, I guess. I have a lot of trans friends, someone of whom worked on the game, and I'd never explicitly written a character of mine AS trans, so Oliver just felt right. I'm glad they all really like him.

grace wasn’t declared aroace by word-of-god, either by andy weir or ryan gosling or anyone else involved in the movie’s production. he’s aroace because he’s portrayed in the novel as a character whose thoughts on sex and romance range from “uninterested” to “active dislike.” he’s aroace because his life and story reject amatonormativity in the same way that many aroace people’s lives do. he’s aroace because, in the film, he feels isolated when he sees people hooking up at a party, and states that he likes to “keep a wall up” in relationships. this is all subtext and coding, but it DOES give us a pretty good idea of whether ryland grace, specifically, would want to date or have sex - and the answer is “probably not”!
