like do people not realise how lucky we are to have someone like dream who basically got the entire gsa up in his fanbase – and instead of pulling some edgy shit like Other Creators and going down the route of mocking the idea of “stans” and alienating them and making them feel weird about being invested in him in a “cringe” way (fanart, fanfics, stan accs etc.) he actually embraced it wholeheartedly and showed vocal support for us right from the beginning, even though i could absolutely GUARANTEE to you that he initially thought his fans were gonna just be the typical gamer 16 year old boys because that was typical of the era that he grew up in. and it would have been so, so incredibly easy for him to go down the pewdiepie route - where he could refuse to learn and grow and simply continue making “edgy” jokes and cultivating a fanbase of kids who don’t have the life experience or critical thinking skills to comprehend the impact of having a role model like that. he could have been the next pewdiepie, making so many bigoted comments that everyone simply becomes desensitised to it, where every single “dark humour” edgelord would flock to him and defend him with everything they have. this is still the norm in the gaming industry. misogyny, homophobia and racism are still the most convenient punchlines for some of the biggest names on twitch, youtube, you name it.

but he didn’t. instead, despite slip-ups along the way, dream took the opportunity to educate himself, to listen to his fans when they called him out for his mistakes, to actively unlearn the ignorance that was instilled into him as a kid and to publicly denounce what he had ever done wrong. and more than that, he never stopped being thankful for the community around him. anyone who has just seen a handful of his tweets can attest to the fact that he is probably the most grateful person to his audience and he tries to show his appreciation as much as physically possible despite all the other responsibilities he juggles. and yet despite all this, because of where he erred here and there in his past, dream has managed to become the internet’s scapegoat for every problem they have with anything. ever. hating dream is quite literally the norm - a trending hashtag in the uk and the us to get him “deplatformed” fuelled by people who didn’t even know what was happening but just wanted to take part in making fun of him.

so to go back to how we’re all “parasocial” and “brainwashed” and “manipulated” – have we considered that it’s been made clear time and time again that no matter what dream does, no matter how much he apologises, he’ll never be perfect enough for hyperwoke chronically online covid teens, and he’ll never impress the wider internet dudebros because he’s too cringey, and he won’t even get the respect of people whose careers he helped (completely out of his own generosity and willingness to support, may i add) because hey, it’s so much easier to make a snide remark about dream stans for a quick joke than it is to keep your mouth shut, right? of course dream is parasocial - the only people who ever actually have his best interests at heart and don’t try and make him out to be some awful irredeemable villain are his fans. which is exactly he tries to show how much he cares about them. but of course that still isn’t good enough for some people because sure enough allegations about “pedophilia” and “grooming” start flying about from the freaks who have no concept of basic human decency.
