This is a production background design for “Collet .45”, an animated short produced by Epoch Ink in 1993. According to IMDB, it was directed by Vladimir Goncharov and Joe Pearson, written by Kevin Altieri and Joe Pearson, produced by Jeff ‘Swampy’ Marsh and Joe Pearson, visual effects by Vladimir Goncharov. The animation department consisted of Sung-Woo Hong (background artist), Nikolay Koshkin (layout artist), Pamela Long (color key), and Joe Pearson (layout artist). Additional crewmembers were Kevin Alteri, Michaael Diederich, Jeff ‘Swampy’ Marsh and Lenord Robinson. It was a USA/Ukrainian co-production, made shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Berlin Wall. I have heard Joe tell of what a magical time and place the Ukraine was during this period. Too bad it’s come to the situation we have now.
This is another piece of animation-production artwork I acquired from Joe Pearson on August 2, 2026. It was drawn by Young Ki Youn for “Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys”, which aired on Bohbot Kids Network in 1996 and 1997. I directed slightly fewer than half of the 26 episodes. Young was one of Joe’s discoveries (in the American animation industry), and has since gone on to fame and fortune, most recently winning a 53rd annual Annie Award for storyboarding (along with Anthony Holden on “The Bad Guys 2”.
This drawing is done in pencil and white out. It is on an 8.5 x 11” piece of copy paper. It is an EFX design, which was Mr. Yoon’s primary job on “Space Monkeys”. Depicted is a ‘Ganglion’, a hench-robot of Rhesus, one of the series recurring villians. Fun fact: Rhesus was voice by Malcom McDowell.
EFX design was Young’s main gig, but he also did storyboard clean-up for me on an episode I directed, “Surf Monkeys Must Die!”. T’was a thing of beauty. One day I will post.
I acquired this page from the artist, Joe Pearson, on August 2, 2026. He invited my husband and I to visit him and his wife, Lisa Pearson, at their lovely home in Long Beach, California. He lured me by telling me he had 4 or 5 boxes of production materials that he was planning to dumpsterize from the archives of his animation studio, Epoch Ink. I worked at as a director on several occasions in the mid to late 1990s, so I was very curious. Also, Joe and Lisa are two of my best friends, and it’s always great to have an excuse to see them.
This is one of the pieces I culled- the original artwork for an early 90’s TV animation pitch called “Captain Kickbutt”. It is a variation on “Captain America”, except the WWII super soldier washes up on Venice Beach in 1993 instead of the North Pole in 1964.
This illustration was inked by Dave Simons who I worked with on several projects during the mid 80’s to mid 90’s. He was one of the great comic book ink-craftsmen, and I think he did a bang-up job on this pitch-piece.

Happy Monday, y’all. Later in the day than I’d like, but I wanted to post on August 10 since today would have been my late mother’s, Maxine Rader (nee Holsinger) 97th birthday.
Maxine died on July 14th, 2023, so she never got to read any of this material. I’m not sure what her reaction would have been if she had. Almost 20 years earlier, I gave her the galley to my in-process graphic novel, “Harry & Dickless Tom”. She made it less than half-way through before she had to stop, asking me, “Why are you dong this? (As in, “Why are you putting so much effort into niche gay-porn”). She might ask me the same question about “A Shadow Called Danger”; I ask myself the same question on a near-weekly basis. I have the same answer now that I do then: it’s what I believe. I want to present it to the world so that those who share my point of view will feel affirmation.
Anyway, here’s to you, Mom, where ever you are.
