After a rain storm The lawn looks like a little Swamp, quiet and still. Grass blades standing tall Like trees above the wetland, A microcosm Of an old forest That surrounds and protects the Lake on the outskirts.

Against the cutting Winds and the oppressive heat, The desert fox moves. The fox charges through The shifting dunes without fear, Piercing eyes focused On her safe haven Aware of the danger and Death, moving forward.

The gulls are at peace. Then, one seed. One chip. One crumb. A banana peel. Some pizza crust. Orange rind. A soft pretzel. A slice of old bread. The flock surrounds them. A depressed cushion, Damaged by the elements. Above a rusted Base, casters broken, Unfit to move or adjust. Fallen on its back But not without use. A cat sleeps on the Mangled headrest, memories Of home in her dreams.

Pressure and tension Can harden and soften you. It’s a constant fight To keep yourself from Decaying into dust or Melting into a Pool of confusion And dread.
