Reminder that nonverbal means you do not verbally speak ever, while verbal shutdown means you have periods of time/episodes where you don't speak verbally.

Don't say you're "going nonverbal", say you're having a verbal shutdown. Nonverbals do not like their language being misused to treat nonverbality as a temporary thing.

(This is not a judgemental post to anyone who has misused the term in the past. It's a common mistake. Just please take this information in stride for the future.)

this also applies to selective mutism! you aren't "going selectively mute" you're experiencing verbal shutdown. if you can speak most of the time to most people in most situations you aren't selectively mute, you're experiencing verbal shutdown.

selective mutism is when you can only, if ever, speak to people you trust and are close with, and in situations you are comfortable in, and/or if you have no choice. otherwise you rarely, if ever, speak, and the idea of speaking in an uncomfortable situation and/or to people you don't trust is accompanied by extreme anxiety.
