Tropical Fish and Aquaria

The Elongate Mbuna (Pseudotropheus Elongatus) are rock-dwelling cichlid fishes found in Lake Malawi of Eastern Afria. It prefers areas with rocky substrates where it can graze on algae. It can reach a length of 9.5 cm (3.7 in)

Butterfly Peacock Bass (Cichla Ocellaris) is a very large species of cichlid from South America, and a prized game fish. It reaches 74 centimetres (29 in) in length.

The Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid (Apistogramma cacatuoides) is found in the Amazon River basin. The male reaches a body length of 8 cm. while the female is considerably smaller, reaching only 5 cm. The body shape is long and of middle height and the mouth is rather big with thick lips. The male is more colorful than the female, usually with red/orange dorsal and caudal fins.

The Bala Shark (Balantiocheilos melanopterus) comes from Thailand, Sumatra and Borneo and grows to 8 in (20 cm). It is a good jumper and the tank should be covered. It is a fairly peaceful fish and will eat all types of foods.

The Giant Danio (Danio malbaricus) comes from the Malabar coast of India and Sri Lanka where it grows to 6 in (15 cm). It lives in shoals in the upper part of the water. The female is more rounded than the male and her central blue stripe turns upward at the caudal fin.

The Lionfish (Pterois) is a venomous marine fish native to the Indo-Pacific.

The Butterfly Cichlid (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is a common name of a species of freshwater fish endemic to the Orinoco River basin, in the savannahs of Venezuela and Colombia in South America. Its other common names, include ram, blue ram, German blue ram, Asian ram, Ramirez's dwarf cichlid, dwarf butterfly cichlid and Ramirezi

The Yellow Tang (Zebrasoma flavescens) is a saltwater fish that can grow to 20 cm (7.9 in). Yellow tang are bright yellow in color. At night, the yellow coloring fades slightly, and a prominent brownish patch develops in the middle with a horizontal white band. They rapidly resume their bright yellow color during daylight.

The Zebra Fish (Brachydanio rerio) comes from eastern India and grows to 1 1/2 inches (3.5 cm) Males are slimmer than females. It is an active fish very suitable for the community tank. They spawn readily.

The Red-Tailed Black Shark (Labeo bicolor) comes from Thailand and the Malay Peninsula where it can grow up to 8 inches (20cm). Aquarium species rarely grow beyond 4 1/2 inches (11.5 cm) in length.

The freshwater ram cichlid (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is endemic to the Orinoco River basin, Venezuela and Colombia. The ram cichlid is innately shy and is best kept with passive dither fish, such as neon or cardinal tetras. It is easier to maintain the species in larger aquaria as the species is intolerant of common aquarium pollutants such as nitrate. The species is prone to filial cannibalism of its brood if distressed. As the water must be free of pollutants, aquarium filtration is important, though water movement should not be extreme.
