heyoo, I finally went and made a sideblog to combine @firstlieutenantoftheking and @oneringindarknessbindthem called enchantedwoodandflames If you rp’ed with either my Feren or my Maltaril you’ve probably noticed that I havent been on either blog in eons, but since I still have muse for them ocassionally here and there: I’ve made them into a shared side blog so I dont have to go through the hoops of constantly switching accounts when the mood strikes to write for them. and I mean in the process I also updated my rules of that blog and this one, slightly.

“It is a terrible place, sometimes. But it’s also wonderful. Wonderful enough to fulfill a wish I had for eons.” And with that, Feren took Thranduil’s hand and pressed a loving kiss to it, a careful but undeniable show of affection- something so incredibly rare for the closed off and private lieutenant. “All I can ask now is for your help with romantic gestures. I’m afraid I rather missed that class in my youth. I didn’t exactly.. socialize much,” he smiled slightly. “You were always better at that, even when we were far under our majority.”

The elvenking’s heart warmed at the simple gesture, knowing it took a lot for Feren to show it.

What!?” Thranduil laughed, though there was only love and no malice in his voice. “Well, surely you’ve seen me do it enough- Valar, especially back then. I had much more expression in those days.”

“Yeah well, seeing is one thing, having your own practice is something else entirely,” Feren said, his slight smile only growing as he finally seemed to be at ease. “I was too worried about my studies and attempts to get into the guard to mingle with others our age. I only ever got out of my house because you dragged me to royal gatherings.”

“Well the good news is that I do not mind being practiced upon, but the most important thing is to do as you feel- And so you need to work on that most, I’ll help you as best I can.” He smiled again, fingertips tracing the sharp shape of Feren’s jawline. “And I was too busy trying to get your attention, seemingly failing, and trying to distract myself otherwise. On second thought, you’re right. You need help there.”

Feren couldn’t help but laugh at that, the sound soft and long forgotten, but warm. Between their heart to heart and the soft touches, Feren finally felt like he could let his walls down. Something he feels like he should have done earlier, but better late than never. “Aye, I do. I’ll still stumble and fall, no doubt, but with you at myself… I can handle it, I’m sure.”

“You’ve handled far worse than romantics, Feren.” Thranduil reached to kiss the lieutenant’s temple. “Besides, its just you and I, and you are in a safe place to practice as you wish- Though I doubt much of anything fromyou would ever be called a failure from me.”

“You dont know how long I have yearned for any place to feel safe. And all this time it was right here, and I just made it difficult for myself by not allowing you in. By not allowing myself that peace.” He shook away the thought, taking one of Thranduil’s hand into his own and running his thumb over the back. “Thank you.”

“There isn’t any reason to thank me. This is your space. Ours. Always.”

Thranduil closed his eyes, feeling a sense of quiet and calm that he rarely felt.

“There’s plenty of reasons to thank you. I dont know whether to thank your patience, or your sheer stubborn nature, but I am grateful that you never gave up on me,” Feren said, leaning against his lover in quiet bliss.

“It’s never been my advice. I don’t think it’s true. Regardless..” Feren sighed, quietly leaning into the touch. “I’ve seen so many ages, Thranduil. And you have to agree, most of it hasn’t been kind to us. It’s an open secret that the weight of those we lost rest heavy upon my heart.”

“I do wish that I could help you,” Thranduil said quietly, his voice mournful, as he knew that there was nothing he could do. He and Feren had both endured so much, and while they dealt with things in a similar fashion, there was still so much difference between them. Thranduil knew his love was not enough to heal the lieutenant, not fully.

“I know that it does, but….” He did not know how to ease the pain, and it only worried Thranduil further that the only logical answer was for Feren to sail. But he wouldn’t go too. “You are my peace in this storm. I wish I could be so for you.”

“You are. I’m learning more and more to accept that instead of fighting against it. It is as if my heart knew there was no longer a reason to pretend, but my head didnt quite catch up.” Feren exhaled, a breath that he felt like he had been holding for years. He knew that there was still more for him to work on. But for the first in a long time, he felt like he was actually making process.

“I’m sorry for making you wait so long.”

“You wouldn’t be you otherwise,” Thranduil smiled, shrugging his shoulders. Sometimes he felt as if they weren’t getting anywhere, just going in circles with the same conversations, Thranduil always feeling like he was being too pushy and asking for too much. He’d stopped asking for anything at all, save for conversation.

“You look tired, you know. Would you like to rest?”

“I’m difficult. Hard to please, hard to read, even harder to understand. Scarred by a world that threw too much at me too fast.” Feren rolled his shoulders, before turning and resting his head against Thranduil’s chest.

“However, I seemed to have forgotten and only recently rediscovered that of everyone here… you understand more than anyone what that is like. I love you. I know I haven’t been grand at showing it, but I do truly love you. And I think it’s about time for me to learn how to let myself be loved by you. I’ll… try to be more open. Let you in. I can’t exactly expect you to read my mind, can I? So no, I do not wish to rest. Can we just… talk?”

“Then let’s talk,” Thranduil nodded, arms wrapping around Feren, the two settled into the mountainous pillows Thranduil had spread in front of the fire- He enjoyed lounging there with a good book and wine, but even more so with Feren’s company.

“Please do not be hard on yourself. You have all my love.”

Maybe it was the mountain of pillows, or the quiet sizzling of the flames in the fireplace, but something about being in the here and now with Thranduil, more cozy than ever..

Something about it put Feren in a more peaceful mood than he had been in a long, long time.

“Aye. But I think we can both agree you haven’t exactly had mine, hm? It’s just… after so many eons of shoving away my feelings for you, finally having what I wanted felt.. unreal. Like it was too good to be true. Like any day we could wake up and the world would’ve turned back to the way it was before.”

He sighed, resting his head to the spot where he could properly hear the other’s heartbeat. “I think… after pretending so long that all I felt for you was loyal dedication as a lieutenant… it became true. I lied to myself for so long that I believed it myself. So when it changed… having to re convince myself of what I felt was real took time.” Another sigh. “I’ve never really been entitled to feel my emotions anyway. It wasn’t a thing that was exactly fostered in my parental home, and when my parents left after your father…” he didnt finish that sentence. “It just got worse. Life is difficult enough without your mind and your heart tearing each other to shreds over which side should be hear.”

“You have given me what you have been able, and I do not hold any resentment about that. I am simply thankful you have trusted to share that with me.”

Thranduil was quiet for a moment, staring up at the carved branches of his ceiling while the firewood slowly crackled.

“I know about harbouring feelings, and the call of duty.” Thranduil wouldn’t mention his wife, not now of all places, but while they’d become close through their political marriage, it was no secret that elleths did not catch his attentions. Still, Thranduil had done what was required of him, though his heart yearned desperately for the lieutenant he’d been privileged enough to call his best and closest friend.

“And I also know how easy it is to focus on all of the terrible things that have happened to us, and to people we know, people we loved. But I cannot truly dwell on the world being a terrible place when it has still brought me here to this moment with you.”

“Am I regally filling out this document?” Thranduil chuckled, dipping his quill in ink as he glanced over at the lieutenant.

“Aye, very much so,” Feren said, a small sigh of obvious adoration escaping the lieutenant.

“You’re incredible…”

“Feren, this is a document permitting the harvest to start a week earlier this year.” Shaking his head, Thranduil finished with his signature, an ornate feat of calligraphy that he could do with his eyes closed at this point. “Hardly incredible.”

“I wasnt talking about the document in particular,” Feren said, a small smile on his lips.

“More the particular elf signing it.”

“Oh, you compliment me too much,” He said with a laugh, reaching to take Feren’s hand, turning it over to press a gentle kiss. “What on earth have I done to you, getting all emotional.”

Feren just shrugged, smiling slightly at the kiss upon his hand.

In similar fashion, the weight of his action dawned upon him. Despite not regretting it, there was a sudden sense of apathy in him that kind of scared him.

"How does your head feel today?"

“Can you please tell Arien to hide back behind the hills?” Feren asked in a groan, shoving his face further into the soft pillows that adorned the king’s bed.

“My head is going to burst…”

“I figured as much.”

Thranduil’s voice was quiet and soft as he spoke, knowing all too well exactly how Feren was feeling in this moment. The king had not slept well himself, finally getting Feren into bed had been a difficult task in itself last night, and Thranduil had been left awake with his thoughts into the early hours of the morning. Still, he wouldn’t bring anything up about the previous evening just yet, sitting carefully on the edge of the bed with a glass of water.

“Come, sit up. You’re going to be needing lots more water today…. and I have a tea that will help later on.”

“Only if you turn Arien off,” Feren grumbled, though he did move… only to plant his face into Thranduil’s chest to hide from the sunlight in the room.

He couldn’t handle the sun right about now. “Please?” he asked, voice muffled by the king’s chest.

The elvenking was quiet as he stroked fingers through Feren’s hair, the glass of water still in his hand.

“I need you to drink this.”

Feren sighed, forcing himself to sit up and take the glass from Thranduil, even if he still hated that the sun was so bright.

“Ugh…. my head…”

Thranduil got up for a moment to close the curtains in the room, keeping a low lantern on instead.

“Mm, you had a lot to drink last night. Surprisingly so.”

“That is what my head is telling me, indeed,” Feren sighed, disappointed in himself.

“I’m sorry about that. It happens when I’m…” Stressed. “Nervous.”

“Nervous? Nervous about what?”

Thranduil kept his voice neutral, eyeing the water glass to ensure a sufficient amount had been consumed.
