Gavin had always loved the sea. Heād grown up next to it, learned how to sail on it, learned what secrets it could provide so that he and his mother could live off of it. So it wasnāt really a surprise to him when he was cursed to be tied to it for the rest of his life.Ā
He hadnāt meant to scorn a sea witch; I mean, who sets out on their day making that their goal? A young woman had tried to seduce him but since he wasnāt into, ah⦠that sort of gender, he had told her no. So, in revenge, she had cursed him. Every night, when the sun hit this horizon, Gavin would grow a tail and become a merman.Ā
At first, his mother had cried. But then sheād learned to accept it. Now Gavin could learn even more about the ocean. He loved exploring it.Ā
The only problem was that, already outcasts, he and his mother couldnāt ever let anyone close. If they did, the strangers might try and hurt Gavin. Or abuse his curse for their own benefit. But eventually, Gavin became lonely. And he wanted to see more of the world than just their stretch of beach.Ā

They had invited him to come along, but he had declined. His mother would have died had she learned he even spoke to them.
He returned to their small house, sad, lonely, but dreaming of the festival.
"Mother," he said just before he was to return to the sea. "Have you ever heard of the Kingās festival?"Ā
His mother froze at the stove but then nodded. āThatās where I met your father,ā she said quietly. āIt was a lovely time.ā
"You best be off, son. I donāt want you having to drag yourself to the sea like last night."Ā
Gavin opened his mouth to try and continue talking about the festival but decided against it.Ā
"Iāll see you in the morning, mother."Ā
He stood up and left. As he stepped into the surf, he heard music coming from far away and smiled dreamily. āOh, how Iād love to goā¦ā
