This is one of multiple parts in Henry Ford’s then radical work plan. The first of which was an above livable wage, giving employees the funds to fuel the economy by spending.
Another key part was shortening the work day. Before this the period could be characterized by the full days of factory work, day in and out. Sunday was the only reprieve, given is was the day of the sky fairy.
Henry Ford decided to try something new though. He gave workers Saturday off and shortened the days hours into smaller shifts.
The combination of money to spend leasurly instead of just necessities and the time to do so/enjoy purchases had two major, positive effects.
Influx of spending stimulated the economy. And happy workers who didn’t just trudge through their endless labor only to benefit the owner proved to be more effective workers.
This worked so well that other companies adopted the policies and it was even speculated by past presidents that we would ‘soon’ (like 30+ years ago) see the day of a four hour work week with only five hours a day and still plenty to go around.
But the truly amazing thing? There is literally no reason that cannot still be reality except for greed, rhetoric, and dogma.
Not to even mention studies showing anything past 6 is a waste of resources for the company.
