The Vethkai were monsters. Every child in Valdreyn knows this. They ruled for three centuries with blood and terror, and when the kingdom finally burned them out, it took everything it had. The ones who survived fled, hid, or died quietly in the years that followed. The wound they left is still open. Everyone agrees it is safer that way.
Everyone agrees there are none of them left.
There are two.
A sibling separated by fire and desperation, older and alone, who has spent years learning how to look like someone the world will not kill on sight â and how to use that. Someone patient, observant, and more dangerous than they appear, crossing a kingdom on a mission they cannot tell anyone the truth about.
And a sibling taken young, forged in an underground arena by years of training and alliance and the particular cruelty of bonds that were never meant to survive â who is about to win a throne they were never supposed to sit on.
They carry the same curse in their blood. The same history in their bones. The same fear of what they might become if they stop fighting it.
They have not seen each other in years.
They are running out of time.
The Siblings
Both siblings are Vethkai, raised in hiding after their parents were killed in the aftermath of the Ashfall Revolt. Their parents concealed their bloodline for years, living as ordinary people in a village in the western marshes. When the concealment failed, their parents died buying them time to run. The siblings were separated in the chaos â the Elder escaping into the wilderness, the Younger taken by Conclave Seekers who recognized potential in them without knowing what they truly were.
Both carry the Kaimark, not yet fully awakened in either. The Younger's is being drawn out by the pressure of the Conclave. The Elder's is being suppressed â barely â by willpower and need.
Both know what they are. Both are terrified of it. Neither is willing to become what their ancestors were. The Kaimark does not care about their intentions.
The Elder (Player Path A) â Age 22â24
The Elder has spent years surviving alone: learning to read people, to pass as ordinary, to give someone exactly what they need before they know they need it. They are not a warrior by nature, though necessity has made them one. Their greatest and most dangerous skill is understanding people â a talent that borders on manipulation and probably crosses that line more often than they admit.
The Younger (Player Path B) â Age 18â20
The Younger was taken young enough that the Conclave is more their world than the family they left behind. They have adapted, survived, and built relationships inside the arena with full awareness of what those relationships cost. They are pragmatic in the way of someone who learned early that sentimentality has a price.
Characters
Sovan â The Idealist (Gender-selectable | Age 22 | Romance: Path A â Book 2)
Background: Human, former conscript soldier Role: Frontline fighter, de facto group leader before the Elder arrives
Sovan enlisted at seventeen â not out of loyalty to the Triumvirate but because the enlistment bonus kept their family fed through a bad winter. They stayed because leaving felt like giving up on the idea that something good could still come from being where they were. That idea died the night their commanding officer ordered a village burned for suspected Vethkai sympathy. Sovan walked away before the smoke cleared and has not stopped moving since.
They believe the new ruler of Valdreyn is a threat. They believe the Elder when the Elder says they want to change that.
Sovan is not naive. They choose to believe in people as a form of resistance â and that choice has blind spots.
Romance arc: Sovan falls slowly and practically. They show care through action before they ever find words for it â sharing rations, taking the longer watch, stepping slightly in front of the Elder without comment when something feels wrong. Available to both siblings at court.
Tessaly Vorn â The Pragmatist (Gender-selectable | Age 24 | Romance: Path A â Book 2)
Background: Half-elven, information broker and occasional fence Role: Scout, lockpick, negotiator.
Tessaly took this job for access to the Triumvirate's financial archive, which contains records that would end a specific merchant's career and close a chapter of Tessaly's life they have been trying to finish for three years.
Tessaly does not trust the Elder. They never fully do. But they recognize competence, and the Elder has it in abundance.
Romance arc: Tessaly's interest looks like professional attention â they notice what the Elder is good at, remember small things, ask questions that seem casual and are not. If the Elder starts to genuinely matter to them, Tessaly becomes slightly more guarded, which is the most honest signal they know how to give.
Mira Cael â The Wild Card (Female | Age 21 | Romance: opens Book 2 only)
Background: Human, former Conclave Candidate Role: Combat specialist â precise, fast, the most dangerous person in the group
Mira joined three weeks before the Elder arrived. She offered her sword, asked for a cut of whatever they found at the end, and has said almost nothing personal since. She is not unfriendly. She is contained. When the Conclave comes up in conversation, something in her expression closes like a shutter.
Romance note: Mira's romance is intentionally withheld from Book 1. In Book 1 she is a companion, a secret, and a bridge. Her feelings, if she has them, are not something she has access to yet. The romance opens in Book 2 for both siblings.
Corvan Ashry â The Conscience (Male | Age 20 | Romance: Path A â Book 2)
Background: Human, self-taught healer and minor scholar from a small religious community Role: Healer, emotional anchor, the one who asks the questions nobody wants to answer
Corvan grew up devoted to a minor deity of reconciliation and crossed purposes â a faith built around the idea that opposing things can both be true. He left at eighteen out of genuine curiosity: he wanted to see whether the world confirmed his faith or complicated it. So far it has been mostly the latter, which he finds interesting rather than discouraging.
He is genuinely, undefensively good. He will not lie about what he believes to make someone comfortable. He will also heal an enemy if they are bleeding in front of him, without asking who they are first.
Romance arc: Corvan is direct about his feelings in the way of someone who was never taught that feelings are dangerous. If he cares about the Elder, he says so â gently, without pressure â and waits to see what they do with that. A romance with Corvan is the Elder being offered something uncomplicated and having to decide whether they are allowed to want it. Available to both siblings at court in Book 2.
The Conclave Love Interests
These three characters begin their romance arcs exclusively on Path B with the Younger.
Lyen â (Gender-selectable | Age 19 | Romance: Path B only
Background: Human, Conclave Candidate â selected from a fishing village on the southern coast Role: The Younger's closest ally inside the arena.
Lyen arrived at the Conclave with very little â no combat training, no political education, no particular reason to have been chosen except that the Seeker who came to their village saw something in the way they moved through a crowd. They are not the strongest Candidate. They are not the cleverest. What they are is present in a way that is almost impossible to perform: they pay attention to people. Fully. Without agenda.
In the Conclave's environment â where every relationship is a calculation â Lyen is an anomaly. They form a genuine bond with the Younger not because they have decided the Younger is useful but because they actually like them. This is, in the Pits of Varek, a radical act.
Romance arc: The romance with Lyen is the gentlest thing in the Younger's path, and the most costly. It builds slowly â shared meals, conversations after training, the specific intimacy of two people who have agreed, without saying it, that they are not going to think about what happens when the arena opens.
Raeth â The Court Outsider (Gender-selectable | Age 21 | Romance: Path B â Book 2)
Background: Human, scribe's apprentice assigned to the Witnessing Gallery above the Pits Role: The Younger's window to the world outside the Conclave, and the first person to see them clearly
Raeth was assigned to the Witnessing Gallery as a junior record-keeper â transcribing training observations for the Conclave's official archive. They are thorough, quiet, and have developed the specific coping mechanism of people who witness difficult things for a living: they write everything down and feel it later.
Their job requires them to observe the Candidates without interacting with them. The rule is technically followed. The notes Raeth slides under the gallery grate to the arena floor below â small, mundane things, information about the outside world, the occasional drawing of something they thought the Younger might want to see â are not technically interaction. They have told themselves this many times.
Raeth sees the Younger from above, through iron grating, for months before they ever speak through the bars. By the time they do, Raeth already knows the Younger better than almost anyone â and the Younger has been talking to someone who asks nothing of them in return, which is a thing they did not know they needed.
Romance arc: The early romance is built on constrained intimacy â notes, whispered conversations through grating, the specific tension of two people who cannot touch and are thinking about it anyway. When the arena opens, Raeth stays in the gallery and watches. They see everything. Available to both siblings at court.
Vael â The House Ward (Gender-selectable | Age 23 | Romance: Path B â Book 2)
Background: Half-elven, ward of House Orath â raised in the Triumvirate's household as a political arrangement Role: The Younger's unexpected ally in the court above, and a source of information with its own price
Vael has lived in House Orath's estate since childhood, technically a guest, practically a hostage of the Triumvirate's internal political agreements. They are educated, observant, and have spent twenty-three years watching powerful people make decisions from close range. They know exactly how the system works and have made a careful art of being underestimated within it.
The Conclave is, for Vael, something they have watched with complicated feelings for years â not because they know the Candidates personally but because they understand exactly what the Triumvirate is trying to build with it. When they find an opportunity to make contact with one of the Candidates, they take it, partly out of genuine sympathy and partly because having a relationship with whoever wins the Conclave is the most interesting move available to them.
The calculation is real. The sympathy is also real. Vael has spent so long watching the Triumvirate that they have lost track of where their strategy ends and their actual feelings begin. The Younger is the first person in years who makes them want to know.
Contact happens through the court visits â the political theater where Triumvirate-adjacent figures are permitted to observe the Candidates. Vael uses these opportunities strategically, and then slightly beyond strategically, and then in ways they stop being able to justify to themselves as strategic.
Romance arc: Vael is the most complicated of the Path B love interests â someone whose motives the Younger cannot be entirely sure of, because Vael is not entirely sure of them either. The romance involves the Younger deciding whether trust is possible with someone shaped by the same system trying to control them. Available to both siblings at court.
Key Supporting Characters
The Triumvirate
Lord Casvor Dain (House Dain, military) â Pragmatic, cold, comfortable ordering cruelty he does not personally commit. Wants the new ruler as a controllable figurehead. Will discover he has miscalculated.
Lady Fenne Orath (House Orath, trade and taxation) â Patient, playing a very long game. She knows something about the siblings' bloodline. She has been waiting to see if it becomes useful. It will. She is also Vael's guardian, which is not a coincidence.
Aldric Voss (House Voss, judiciary and information) â The most dangerous of the three. He ordered the burning of the marshes village years ago. He does not know the Elder survived. He will find out.
Conclave Master Rethyn
An older official who has overseen three Conclaves. Not sadistic â clinical. The Conclave is a mechanism, and they are its maintenance. They have noticed something unusual about the Younger. They have not yet decided what to do with that information.
The Other Candidates (Path B)
Eight remaining Candidates beyond the three love interests:
Davan Fell (21) â Quiet, northern, has been the Younger's sparring partner for two years. Either genuinely fond of them or has decided that keeping close to the greatest threat is the smartest move.
Sariel (19) â Rarely speaks. Wins every strategy game. The other Candidates are afraid of her.
Fen (18) â Attached to the Younger with the particular fierceness of someone who has decided they are their best chance at survival.

Do you have some... your own established image of the Siblings? Their personality, gender, names, appearance?
Btw. it was mentioned somewhere that their eye color is gray. May I ask why or it's spoiler?
Yes, the book originally started out as a traditional book that I was working on. I didnât gain the idea of turning it into an interactive book until about a year ago, so I do have their original image in my head when writing.
As for the eyes, its not at all a spoiler. The Vethkaiâs silver eyes are how the humans are able to differentiate between Vethkai and human. Itâs a sign of their bloodline/curse.
We won't be able to decide what MC thinks about their sibling?
To an extent you will, some things such as the elder not seeing the younger as an enemy and the younger having a skewed view of the older is just locked bcs of how I have the book written. So fear not! Most of the relationship between the siblings is up to the reader, I just canât really get around that specific part without having to rewrite a butt ton of stuff due to how much its intertwined in the story.
To everyone else and maybe the younger, yes, theres a lot of technicalities. The elder is traveling with a group whoâs main job is to remove the the younger from the throne, I wonât say much but the elder loves the younger very deeply and would never consider them an enemy. They are doing what they have to in order to get to them ifywim.
The youngerâŚ
Uhhhhhh, well who knows what theyâre thinking in that head of theirs! ha.. hahaha..ďżź
I accidentally sent this to the wrong if but it had a sibling char too so all good
You said all the ROs will be available regardless of which MC we choose, so does that mean the sibling we don't choose can't romance any of them? If so thats a shame since I would like for both siblings to find love (if necessary maybe we could matchmake the other sibling as our MC?)
Woahhhh you actually read my mind lol. When I started planning book two, I was really really struggling on how to make that happen and settled on match making the other siblingđđ
But, depending on who you end up choosing will definitely affect the romance with characters that arenât originally on that route, this is especially seen in the elders route. If you try to match make the younger with someone on the elders route, it will be hardđ The groups whole directive is too get the younger off the throne so it will be difficult but definitely possible! A lot easier if you want to match them with someone on their route, but it is all optional!!
The youngers route would be a lot easier in trying to match make the elder with someone, both with the characters on their route or with the ones on the youngers.
But itâs not really something Iâd be too worried about tbh as that is wayyyy in the future and you only match make them if you want to, you can definitely choose to just focus on sibling relationship, but it was a great ask!!!!!

What would you do, if you knew how it would all end?

But before you can proceed, you are thrown back to the beginningâ back to day zero, in a tranquil village on the outskirts of a kingdom where magic vibrates in the very air and power is worn as a royal mantle.
The day the heraldâs prophecy comes to fruition, a knight arrives to your village, bearing the emblem of the Crown. By will of the Crown, you are forced to join the blue-bloods who are flocked like cattle into a carriage drawn by horses. You and your neighbor are taken from your homes to be trained within the imperial stronghold.Â
Despite your predicament, there's something itching the back of your mind⌠Your neighborâs eyes oddly remind you of something.

HI! just curious, do you have face claims and/or mood boards for the characters?
holy cow you actually just reminded me to continue working on those lol.
No, i donât currently have any face claims or mood boards but they are definitely in the works! Iâll say to expect mood boards specifically around next week! face claims are a little harderâŚ
Whats everyoneâs opinion on perspective when writing/reading IFâs?
I recently saw a video and everyone was saying that they hated 1st person, which was just a bit shocking! I didnât know so many people disliked 1st and 2nd personđł
hi! I just found this IF and I'm OBSESSED with the concept! can't wait to play the demo! I'm already torn between sovan, tessaly, and corvan đ
Omg yay! Iâm so happy youâre excited. Honestly I love the LIâs in the elders route, theyâre all just so sweetâşď¸âşď¸âşď¸âşď¸ Corvan is def my favorite to write out of them thođââď¸đââď¸

~~~~~~~
22. Tall, built for distance rather than showy strengthâlong-limbed, steady-footed, posture controlled like restraint is a skill. Skin is medium-tan, weathered from travel, with faint old sun-mottling across the nose and cheekbones. Eyes are steel blue with a cool green edge: steady, assessing, hard to distract. Hair is dark brown, thick, usually kept short at the sides and pulled back from the face when itâs longer. A faint scar splits the right eyebrow. Hands are roughened and scarred at the knuckles, palms callused; thereâs an old burn mark on the right index finger. Clothes are functional layers in dark slate/charcoal, worn boots, gear kept in the same places every timeânothing decorative that can be grabbed.
Sovan is the one who keeps the group moving when fear would stall it. To the MC, Sovan becomes a kind of gravity: a person whose attention feels like safety, and whose disapproval feels like danger.
If the MCâs life is full of gates, Sovan is the one who insists they get to decide which ones open.
Sovan has history with the League and the Triumvirate that they donât lay out in clean sentences. Theyâve seen bureaucracy become violence. Theyâve seen people vanish into âprocedures.â
Thereâs a wound that keeps reopening when the topic turns to Conclave Seekers, and a name Sovan doesnât say unless the night is quiet enough to swallow it.
Sovanâs affection feels like a rule you didnât realize you agreed to. They donât seduce; they commit. The romance is slow heat: control offered as care, care offered as claim.
"Every word I say is kindling But the smoke clears when youâre around Wonât you stay with me, my darling When my walls start burning down, down, down?â
~~~~~~
21. Wiry, moves like extra motion is a liability. Skin is medium with an olive undertone; shadows sit under the eyes from sleeplessness. Eyes are dark blue and constantly checking doors, uniforms, hands. Face is composed, hard to read; the tension lives in the mouth and jaw, where a faint scar catches light at the jawline. Hair is black, cut short and plain on purpose. Hands are precise, ink-marked (an ink-stained thumb is hard to hide); touch is brief and intentional. Clothing is muted, functional, and forgettable by design.
Raeth is the MCâs access point to what the Conclave knowsâand what itâs hiding. To the MC, Raeth becomes a kind of mirror: someone who sees the monster-making machine and refuses to pretend itâs not real.
Raeth doesnât comfort first. Raeth gives you armor.
Raeth has seen files they werenât meant to see and survived having that knowledge. Their history is tangled with the courtâs recordkeepingâtruth reduced to paper, then used as a weapon.
There are things Raeth did to endure that they wonât confess, and there are people Raeth betrayed (or saved) depending on who tells the story.
The romance is a slow burn of shared danger. Raeth becomes intimate through risk: every secret traded is a confession, every act of help is a stake in each otherâs survival.
âBut have you ever been so scared? I swear I prayed youâd be here Put my heart in a place Iâll never understand They say Im too young to love you But I donât want nobody elseâ
~~~~~~~
24, 5â9, Lean, quick, deceptively relaxed, moves like nothing is urgent until it suddenly is. Skin is pale with a cool undertone that reads almost translucent in lamplight. Eyes are bright ice-blue and uncomfortably direct. Face is sharp-cheekboned, mouth made for smirks; a small beauty mark sits under the left eye. Hair is platinum blond, chin-length, kept too neat to be accidental, usually tucked behind one ear. Hands are long-fingered and steady, faint ink stains on the fingertips; a thin scar crosses the back of the right hand. Clothing is black/charcoal with hidden pockets; boots quiet-soled; a thin chain at the throat like a habit they wonât explain.
Tessaly is the first person who treats the MCâs survival instincts as a language they already speak. Where others comfort, Tessaly teaches, how to lie without flinching, how to breathe without betraying fear, how to keep a predator from smelling blood.
To the MC, Tessaly becomes proof that control can look like care.
Tessaly has been running from something longer than they admit. A debt that doesnât expire. A name that changes but keeps the same shape.
They talk about Voss like hes inevitable, personal, familiar. Thereâs someone Tessaly refuses to nameâsomeone who makes their carefulness feel like fear.
Tessaly wants to be the only person the MC turns to when things get ugly.
hi, sorry for the stupid question but I'm confused, are we playing 2 MCs or are we just choosing one? and only 3 of the ROs are available to the elder but all 7 are available to the younger?
No question is a stupid question! Itâs partly a mistake on my part for doing most of my planning and posting late at nightđđ
At the beginning of the story, youâll have a choice to either play as the younger sibling or the older sibling and continue the story from there.
All of the ros will eventually be available to both siblings but right now they are limited to the path you choose.
âIf I just vanished, do you think youâd manage? Or would you disappear right beside me? Do you think youâre ready, when I go unsteady? Lover, please prepare for my absence.â
~~~~~~~
25, 5'7" (170 cm); compact strength, quick balance, built for sudden acceleration rather than endurance marathons. medium-deep with a neutral undertone; scars read pale against it in harsh light; old bruises fade slower than they should. dark brown eyes, sharp and constant. dark hair (near-black), kept practical (short or tied back); usually tied tight enough it wonât snag; flyaways only show after a fight or a long run. callused hands built for grips and edges; small nicks at the knuckles; old healed cuts at the forearms; a faint notch in one eyebrow; posture that keeps weight ready on the balls of the feet, like the body is always half a second from moving. quiet breathing; minimal wasted motion; tends to stand slightly off-center of a room (never directly in a doorway, never directly under a light). practical, dark, silent clothes that donât snag when you run; gear worn-in and positioned for speed, not aesthetics; boots chosen for silence over comfort
Mira is blunt, tactical, and impatient with sentimentâyet frighteningly attentive to what people need versus what they say. She doesn't offer comfort first; she offers plans, exits, and the terrible thing she'll do so nobody else has to. Mira reads power dynamics instantly, trusts slowly, and once trust is earned it becomes hard to breakâbecause Mira protects in a way that costs her something.
Her past tastes like roads instead of cities: ambush angles, not etiquette; survival learned early enough that hesitation feels like a sin. Mira doesnât give full stories about where she learned to move like this. You get half answers, changed subjects, an implied history with lossâenough loss that attachment should feel like a liability, and Mira keeps choosing it anyway. Under the steel is a specific, private want to make sure you never have to become the worst version of yourself just to live.
Mira is like a memory you can never quite hold on to, she believes love makes people vulnerableâand Mira hates vulnerability. So the romance becomes a slow reshaping of what âsafetyâ means: not just surviving the night, but allowing someone to see the parts of her that are tired, scared, and still choosing you anyway.

"But I donât know what else that I would do. Than try to kiss the skin that crawls from you. Than to feel your weight on arms Iâd never use. Itâs the god that heroin prays to.â
~~~~~~~
20, 6â0" (175 cm); slender, long-limbed; shoulders a little hunched from writing. light with warm undertone, freckles across nose, bruises show easily. soft mouth, thoughtful brow, cheeks hollow slightly when stressed. deep brown eyes, always moving, always reading. Lashes too long (unfairly pretty). Chestnut, wavy hair falls into his eyes; usually shoved back. Ink-stained fingertips, small calluses at the base of the fingers; one cracked nail from travel. worn scholar layersâsoft linen shirt, patched vest, scarf that smells faintly of paper and smoke; journal strapped close like a rib.
Corvan is the one who sees the MC when the MC is trying to become unseeable. To the MC, Corvan becomes a fragile kind of refuge: someone whose attention isnât a threat, but a witness.
Corvan doesnât demand the MC perform. Corvan just⌠stays.
Corvanâs visions are not a new phenomenonâjust newly intense. He learned long ago that speaking about them invites punishment, mockery, or worse.
Thereâs a history with institutions: records, shrines, officials who decide what is âtrue.â Corvan knows what it costs when the wrong people write the story.
Corvanâs romance is intimate because itâs witnessing. He falls in love slowly, faithfully, and with terrifying permanence. His possessiveness is gentle, which makes it harder to refuse.
"you carry your fear carefully, like itâs a fragile thing, but when it comes down to choosing, you donât hesitate. you donât love loudly. you love slow, and permanent."
âJust donât hang your hopes on me I wanna feel something God, you look so pretty When you tell me that you love me.â
~~~~~~~
23, 5â7, controlled movements. Skin is deep brown with a cool undertone that looks almost shadowed in palace light. Eyes are golden-brown with a sharp dark ring: predatory focus, eye contact held like a dare. Hair is black, perfectly kept, shoulder length and often half-tied with a ribbon. Hands are usually gloved; rings signal status; faint ink traces show at the wrist and fingertips when the gloves shift. Tiny tells live at the glove seams, subtle scuffs from nervous fidgeting. Clothing is high-collared, dark silk and crisp tailoring.
Vael is the MCâs most volatile mirror: someone who recognizes the MCâs potential for danger and doesnât look away. To the MC, Vael becomes temptation, they become proof that power can be worn like silk, that cruelty can be made beautiful.
Vael is also a warning: closeness to the Triumvirate is not survivable without becoming something compromised.
Vael is tied to House politics and court machineryâclose enough to be watched and used. âWardâ is the kind of word that sounds safe until you really think about it.
Thereâs evidence Vael has been trained to perform loyalty. Thereâs also evidence theyâve been quietly collecting their own leverage.
A tense, high-stakes attraction. Vaelâs romance is negotiation and obsession: âshow me your teeth,â âlet me see what you become.â They want the MC dangerous, but not for the court iykwimđłđłđł
"i canât tell if you want to own me, or if youâre begging â silently, beautifully â to be the one who gets to choose for once."
