For my Mechanical Turk assignment I decided to focus on UCSD’s social life. I am a shuttle driver and some passengers have told me that UCSD is a beautiful campus, but the people don’t seem very friendly. Why is that? Many factors can apply here for example the stress of having to pass our classes or the struggles that each individual goes through when in college. The fact of the matter is that students walk on campus with unsocial faces. I decided that I would focus on social aspects of the Internet and why it is easier to interact virtually, yet in the real world, it doesn't happen. Hypothetically speaking I will create a Mechanical Turk assignment, where students will be paid 5 cents to create a video online introducing themselves and posting it online or 20 cents for introducing themselves to someone physically on campus. I have asked some of my friends to choose and of course they have decided to record themselves in a video. I asked why and the main response is because it’s much faster and less humiliating via the Internet. We have many dating websites, sex websites, and social websites. Most of us have relied on match.com to find dates or partners. Most UCSD students use Facebook or texting to interact with others. Library walk is suppose to be a walk way of interaction and most students walk with ear buds or pretend to text or be talking on the phone just so they can avoid interaction. Why is it better to meet online have we become that lazy to not want to physically meet people? These questions will be answered when more people get involved in my Mechanical Turk project.
