hi
My interpretations of funara/narafu on my golden wind reread :-) if i say something strange about them its probably explained by something i believe here.. read if youd like
One: I got obsessed with the circular nature of narancia's death… he dives in after trish because he empathizes with her situation and remembers when it was him, abandoned and betrayed. he wants to save her the same way he himself was saved.
fugo is the person who initially saved him, even if narancia idolizes buccellati for the larger role he played. fugo is the one that brought him into that restaurant. a world where narancia didn't jump in after trish ceased to exist once he felt fugo and bruno's kindness. the same actions that save narancia's life ultimately condemn him to death.
this becomes a neat little situation where fugo regrets how many of his friends died after he parted ways with them, but he himself helped create the circumstances for narancia, at the least, to die. narancia is inspired by the kindness he himself was once shown, the same kindness fugo cannot bring himself to spare for trish.
Two: fugo is a character as much defined by his kindness as he is by his anger… when he's calm, you can tell how hard he tries to look after narancia. he's gentle, encouraging, and tries to break things down the best he can. given how much he loathes his own anger, you can assume the opposite as well, that he loves to be kind. he wants to prove he can be a gentle person.
his tutoring of narancia is one of the only outlets he has for goodness, as a gangster. does he suck at it? well, yeah, from what we see. brings me to point three…
Three: this might not be as prominent in the anime, but in the manga it feels very pointed that fugo's anger is only triggered by people misunderstanding, or under-performing, or generally acting "stupid." for example, he doesn't really care when trish uses his jacket to dry her hands, something that would piss off a ton of people, really. there's a very specific pattern to his anger.
to put on my therapy hat, he's definitely emulating the way he was raised. he was always expected to pick things up quickly, and know all the answers, and he internalized those expectations. this is why narancia specifically pushes his buttons so easily, because narancia was neglected and grew up with no discipline or expectations placed on him at all. which leads into…
Four: fugo and nara are such dramatic opposites, that they feel like a pair. fugo is cautious and logical (when calm, and he abhors losing control), and narancia is emotional and crashes into situations with little thought. fugo grew up highly educated, in a rather wealthy family, while narancia dropped out of school and lived on the streets.
narancia wants to be smart and dependable, something he sees fugo as. fugo wants to be a kind person, something he sees narancia as. they both hold each other's dream, and could grow with each other… sniffle…
Five: a continuation of four? but i need to specifically talk more about fugo's apparent rationality versus narancia's emotions-first approach in regards to the betrayal scene. i… know it's semi-canon, but i really can't agree that fugo didn't want to go with the gang, or couldn't understand any of the reasons anyone had for leaving. we already know he has the selfless empathy needed to go out of his way for near-strangers, as demonstrated when he saves narancia. we know he has the same love for his fellow members, and a lack of anything else in his life to return to.
so why doesn't he leave? we could take it as a character inconsistency, justified by the fact that he had to be written out of the plot because his stand was too strong. but it's more fun to figure out how to make it all fit together.
in the manga, he's just as sweaty and conflicted as narancia when buccellati proposes the betrayal. i think he truly wanted to go, and understood why the gang would go. but he was too logical to throw caution to the wind, and too logical to listen to what his heart wanted. due to his anger issues, he already knew how to constantly ignore and condemn his emotions, and i think that's what led him to hold strong to his beloved #facts and #logic here.
there's literally nothing left in the world for him outside of buccellati's gang, so of course he regrets this decision forever too. that's just how it is.
anyways! talk to me more if you'd like. if you disagree that's awesome too i'd be interested in respectfully knowing why. xoxoxo.
