"I do not mind getting to know them whatsoever, if anything I look forward to it! I fail to see how this helps you with your actual crush, that's all." Sungho frowned as he washed the pan for the fifth time. 

Leehan stood beside him, watching carefully as his friend tried to save one more kitchen utensil from dying on them. "Like I told you, I get to learn sign language for free." 

"Not really free if you have to do something in exchange!" Riwoo exclaimed from the other side of the tiny kitchen while he rummaged inside the refrigerator.

"I mean monetarily speaking." Leehan pointed out.

"Wasn't Jaehyun already doing that for you?" Sungho asked.

Leehan took a second longer to gather his thoughts, "Technically, but we barely have time to meet and it's only going to be for a couple of months. Besides, Jaehyun told me it'd be better if a deaf person taught me sl themselves."

"Yes, okay, that does make sense. The fact that you have to pretend to date said person in order to get that knowledge doesn't." Sungho said, leaving the pan to dry out in the sink and hoping for the best. "Like don't get me wrong, Leehan. I'm so happy to see you're actually doing something about your crush thing and not letting it rot as you've done in the past, I just can't help but see a few flaws in your plan." 

Leehan stood still, eyes traveling from one of his friends to another. "No, I get it. It can seem sloppy from the outside, but..." 

"It does, yeah." Sungho shrugged.

"Unless..." As if nothing, Riwoo –who had been observing from afar, listening to the conversation rather than actively joining it– took out a bowl of grapes and blackberries from the fridge and simply said, "Unless his crush and his fake partner are the same person."

introductions

When Rina exited the library to meet Jaehyun, crossbody bag hanging gracefully over her left shoulder, she couldn't hold in the instant frown that formed between her eyebrows. Jaehyun hadn't mentioned he was accompanied, did he? Rina changed her expression at light speed, turning confusion into a welcoming smile.

She waved at the two boys waiting in front of her, bowing at the unknown person standing next to her friend. The boy waved and bowed as well, smiling back. He was taller than Jaehyun and Rina couldn't help but notice he looked familiar somehow.

“Evening, Ri!” Jaehyun signed and oralized. It was something he was used to do whenever he spoke with both deaf and hearing people.

"You didn't say you had company." Rina cocked her head, signing slowly in case the other person understood them.

“Well, to begin with the plan, better sooner than later, am I right?” Jaehyun cocked his head, mimicking his friend. 

Rina tried to maintain her facial expression as neutral as she managed, but her eyes widened for a solid second. Were they really about to do that right now?

His acquaintance nugged Jaehyun and said something Rina wasn't able to catch due to the distance separating them. The dim light of the streetlights around them wasn't of much help even if they were right beside them. Rina closed the distance between her and the boys right away.

“No, I didn't tell them we were coming. We did discuss the plan, though.” Jaehyun replied, signing as well. 

The other boy facepalmed himself, scoffing and pinching his nose. '"I swear to God, Jaehyun..."' He murmured to himself. He squared his shoulders and started to sign. "I'm so sorry. I'm Leehan. His friend. Nice to meet you."

So this was the friend Jaehyun told her about... The one learning sign language and the one who would help with her little lie? His signing was wavering, but Rina could tell he tried his best to not show it. It was clear he had practiced the spelling of his name because he signed it quite fluidly.

"Nice to meet you too. I'm Rina!" She spelled her name and right after she did her sign name. Leehan looked at her funnily, scrunching his nose.

Rina was about to sign but realized there was a chance he wouldn't understand her and she didn't want to depend on Jaehyun to communicate with him, so she took her phone and opened the notes app. 

'Jaehyun didn't tell you about sign names?' She typed out and turned the phone towards him.

'"Oh, no, yeah, he did. It's just that-"' He mumbled, turning to Jaehyun. '"How do you say 'I think it's cute'?"' 

Rina tried to keep her eyes on his lips to read as much as she could and smiled to herself when she put the pieces together.

'"Like this,"' Jaehyun signed, “But they already understood you.” He stated, pointing his head towards Rina. “Ri is very good at lip-reading.”

'"Oh, I see."' He nodded a few times as if he was registering the information before he signed anyways, "I think– your name is cute."

"Thank you!" She signed, then wrote on her phone, 'Maybe with a little more time, we can think of one for you 🍀'.

Leehan took out his phone too and used a random empty chat to type out, 'I'd really like that☺️'.

Rina typed again, 'Did he... tell you about my crazy plan? 😅'.

Leehan nodded, 'A little bit yeah haha and also about the sign language lessons 👁️ but he didn't really get into many details'.

'"Okay!"' Jaehyun exclaimed, taking Leehan out of his trance, as he waved his hand to get Rina's attention as well. “Now that you two love birds know each other, what do you think about exchanging numbers and getting the hell out before we get caught around here past curfew? We don't need to go home yet, though, I know a place–”

'"The swimming pool?"' Leehan took a guess. Oh. And a second later, he used his hands to recreate a person jumping off a diving board.

Rina laughed softly, nodding, and looked at Jaehyun with a witty smile. She was about to sign but opted to type on her phone and show it to both of them.

'"Ah, yes. Isn't there where he takes his dates to? Mischievous emoji"'. Leehan read out loud, laughing out of surprise.

He took his phone again and typed as he read for Jaehyun, '"'He's taken me there multiple times, inserte surprised emoji. Do you think that means I've been his date this whole time?"' Leehan waited for Rina to read his reply, to which she shrugged her shoulders, a teasing smile creeping on her lips.

Jaehyun couldn't help but study the situation in front of him for half a minute before rolling his eyes at his friends. At last, he smiled at them, denying with his head. “Trust me, if you were my date I would've made it very very clear from the start. I'm just a dude who wants to help his dummy friends out and go for a little swim while he's at it.”

— a few months ago —

A foggy autumn evening like every other, Sang Rina was sitting in the table nearest to the window at the campus library. Unlike other nights, she was not paying attention to the books laying on the wooden table in front of her but rather looking aimlessly through the stained glass window. A few students were still wandering around the library, but the place was rather empty and Rina's friends weren't there –never were really–, which was both good and bad. Good because it gave Rina quietness to think about the breakup and bad because it gave Rina too much quietness to think about the breakup.

—"We should call things off."

Rina froze in her seat at the cafeteria. "What? What do you mean?" She signed, confused. Was he messing around? He had to be, right?

Jiseok made a sad face, "I think we should stop seeing each other before I leave. It's the best for us."

Rina could feel the tears beginning to form in her eyes. She looked around the cafeteria and saw a couple of faces glancing at them. 'Do not cry, Rina. Those staring don't even know what this is about. Don't let people see you down.' "The best for you, you mean?"

The boy sighed tiredly, "Come on, Rin. Let's be real. We've barely been together and long distance relationships are hard to maintain." His signing had a laziness to it that Rina didn't miss.

"Maybe to you." Rina signed, accusatory and heated. She could feel the raising tone her signing was projecting, "We haven't even tried."

Jiseok pressed his lips thin, adjusting his left hearing aid before signing, "I don't want to." —

Rina's phone vibrated below the books and the papernotes persistently, one notification after another, bringing her back to the present, and with it to the stillness of the library.

She sighed, rather deeply. Overthinking time was over.

a/n: hello everyone!! i wanted to create a bit of context so i did this two parts prologue to start the journey. this features kim jiseok from big ocean because i wanted to include actual deaf people and he fit the characters' ages perfectly (he is a 03 liner) so that's why! if you haven't checked big ocean i highly recommend you to do so. it's a 3 members kpop group where all of them are deaf/hard of hearing and sign in ksl, asl and even do some international signing! they're really great and nice guys so yeah. also this is all fiction so he is in no way a dickhead as i painted him lmao, that's just for the character. anyways, part two is about leehan and his adventures before the real thing starts so buckle up!

kim donghyun - marine biology major, junior. also known as leehan. since he was a little kid, donghyun enjoyed two things: the sea –and everything that came with it, especially its wild life– and taekwondo; and he was determined to do both. that's why his parents took him to taekwondo lessons. he soon got quite good at it, but not as good as he had imagined, which began to take a toll on him as he grew older. on the other hand, being born in a city next to the sea meant leehan and water had been one since the beginning. his parents often went camping in the weekends to go fishing, so it was a matter of time before donghyun either grew to love or to hate the vast knowledge that was being thrown at him. the thing is, no one expected him to love fishes to the point he would end up raising them for fun and, furthermore, studying them in order to make a life out of it. however, in order to do that, he had to leave his beloved seaside for a while to pursue his dream, but hey! at least in the meantime he gets to live with a pair of roommates who happened to become his best friends. not everybody can say that, huh?

lee sanghyuk - performing arts major, senior. also known as riwoo. leehan's friend and roommate. sanghyuk had always put his heart and soul into every thing he was interested in, no matter how hard it was. despise being a quiet kid, he loved all that had to do with singing and dancing and he soon knew there were two wolfs inside him: riwoo –his on stage charismatic persona– and sanghyuk –his laid-back off stage self– and when he realized performing was his number one passion and what he wanted to dedicate his life to, he didn't hesitate to follow his dreams throughout the process. sanghyuk met leehan when the younger started his major a year later and was assigned to be his and sungho's roommate. he didn't know what exactly but there was something about donghyun's presence that made sanghyuk feel comfortable around him. and the rest? it's history.

park sungho - fine arts major, senior. leehan's friend and roommate. to put it simple: sungho was an art lover, a yearner and a hopeless romantic. he loved everything that had to do with painting, drawing and even filming. as a kid he enjoyed doodling half of his room's walls and rewatching his favorite films. as he got older, sungho loved going to the movies and writing down long, detailed reviews right after (cinema was very serious to him) and visiting art exhibitions at his city's local museum. it was crystal clear for him what his interests were."nothing comes for free in life anyway, darling, so what's better than to live off something you love doing?" his grandma used to say, and he took her advice to the core and now he was months away to achieve it. just like his friend riwoo, sungho met leehan when he joined them as their new roommate. little did he know that the form he filled in to kick out their old roommate would change the course of his (college) life forever.

myung jaehyun - music production major, senior. leehan's friend and swimming buddie. jaehyun introduced himself to leehan when the latter moved in to the uni dorms in his first year. he heard from his teammate sungho in football practice that someone was moving in to his and riwoo's dorm and jaehyun didn't waste a second to make a potential new friend.

sang rina - archeology major, junior. deaf - severe to profound hearing loss. rina had liked ancient creatures from a very young age. they would sit through every single documentary that was on tv and even beg their parents to visit the archeology museum more often than not so they could attend every temporary exhibition available. her parents took notice of rina's interest very soon and started buying excavation kits for her to dig, and what first began as a silly little hiperfixation became a hobby and a possible future career. when rina was still a child, she suffered from an inner ear infection that led to a sudden, severe and permanent hearing loss. deafness wasn't something unknown to the family (a long distance cousin of rina's father had been born deaf and he had witnessed how the woman spent half her young years isolated because of adults' negligence) so soon after rina was taken to sign language classes. from then on, rina's vision of their future started to change, slightly. sl became their main form of expression, a way to communicate that they felt more comfortable and free with.

han dongmin - fashion design major, junior. also known as taesan. hard of hearing - moderate hearing loss, hearing aids user. rina's friend and roommate. taesan was a child who had a thing for languages, so their parents didn't waste a minute and signed him up for english classes as soon as he started elementary school. he seemed to enjoy it a lot, which is why they gave him the opportunity to join another course if he thought he could keep up with school as well. around the same block he studied at, there was a deaf association offering spots for the upcoming sign language course and his mother encouraged him to join it. he met rina in the association when she praised his outfit after he told her he had sewed it himself (with the help of grandma). taesan found rina's compliments so genuine he promised he'd make her something too, and that he did, many, many times. fast-forward in time: rina became sort of taesan's muse, but he would never say it out loud.

myung jaehyun - music production major, senior. coda. rina's friend and roommate. as a child of deaf adults, jaehyun was exposed to sign language from the very moment he came out of his mother's womb. he was a skilled kid who learned at a fast pace, which made him take on various hobbies, such as football* and writting poetry. his passionate spirit went on beyond his teen years and when he started his major, he joined the football team, as well as the dance club. his bright and charming personality made his circle of friends and acquaintances very diverse. everyone that knew him, close friends included, wondered how jaehyun could be talented at that many different things and how on earth did he find the time to do all of them. till today, no one really knows. jaehyun met rina through taesan in their last years of high school and since then, jaehyun has taken the role of rina's older brother figure a bit too seriously.

kim woonhak - music composition major, freshman. deaf in one ear. rina's protégé and roommate. every person that had ever met woonhak said he was a loud and dazzling ray of sunshine. woonhak had always made an impact wherever he went to. when he was little, he was the kind of toddler who was playing at the park nonstop, sharing his toys with other children that wanted to play with him. he hardly cried, but when he threw tantrums it felt like making sure everyone in the neighborhood knew he was going through something was his mission. that's how the son of the kims' neighbors, a boy named myung jaehyun, got to know him. even tho woonhak was 3 years younger, they became very good friends. they shared their love for music and soon –and without noticing– jaehyun became a person woonhak looked up to. eventually, rina met the youngest thanks to jaehyun and ever since, he is like the little brother rina never knew she needed.

sang rina is at an awkward point in her dating life: trying to get over her ex –if one could call him that– for good. the thing is, he is back from an exchange program which means they'll have to face each other in campus sooner or later. but there is no way rina would ever let him think she still has feelings for him, so she thinks –or rather doesn't think– of the easiest way to deceive him: pretending to be in a relationship.

author's note: oh my god..... first of all, hello guys! it's been 84 years 😓 i am so so sorry for leaving y'all hanging, but things have been... 😵‍💫. i had a ton shit school work to do and on top of it i had (still have) a writer's block 💔 and i couldn't write anything because i lost inspiration, not only with this fic but with my other works and just in general tbh. i plan on continuing this one because i think their story could be very beautiful and i am not giving up, so please guys don't give up either :(. also i am writing another smau about a deaf oc, but it wasn't getting anywhere and i wanted to change the storyline of the main characters a little bit so i just deleted it and started it from scratch! so yeah. that's pretty much it. i will try to post more often but i can't give you a schedule because i really don't know when that will be and the last thing i want to give y'all is false hope so yep. just know that i'll continue it, however long it takes. thank you sm for still reading and liking this au, it means a lot ♡
