i know it looks like primus is the one who came up with the tachonis world domination plan but are we sure about that? because his ‘either we rule everything or are dead in a year’ line sounds like he’s also scared and following orders, and i think that maybe the person giving those orders is our beloved and benevolent grandfather nullus

this pinged something in my brain so i went back to e31 and checked - primus says "we'll rule this world before the year is out". iirc, candlefeast takes place on the autumn equinox. now, we don't know when the year changes in araman's calendar, but it's imo it's safe to assume that it's somewhere between the winter solstice (because of the Real World) and the beginning of spring (cause it makes sense). so, it seems that our timeline for what the tachonis are trying to do is, at most, half a year. i do wonder why they're rushing so much

oh that’s a good point!! so they’ve got somewhere between three and six months to finish what they’ve started. i think there’s an actual argument to be made for the new year being in spring beyond ‘because it makes sense’, too: i wouldn’t be surprised if the halovars were pushing for ‘the beginning of the year’ to be the spring equinox. the lengthening days mean there’s some very good strength of the light/‘the light is always with us even in our darkest times and it will always return to us if we keep the faith’/renewal of light’s power imagery that i can’t see them not capitalising on that, if the idea had ever occurred to them.

(the 25th of march was also a popular and long-standing option for the beginning of the year in medieval and early modern england (and probably beyond, like i’m pretty sure this was a valid and useable date across christian medieval europe, but those are the times and location i know for certain used lady day as one of the main ‘new year’ dates) because that’s lady day/annunciation. so while this is an incredibly tenuous argument for the halovars advocating for an equinox-adjacennew year, and it’s based on a bunch of maybes, very vague theory threads, and assumptions about creative influence, the creed having some parallels with/7elements of christianity and brennan definitely having used somewhat opaque historical precedent/reference in his worldbuilding before, it’s not quite out of the realm of possibility.) (also i have a theory that this is why our tax years start and end around then but i haven’t actually researched the thread of new-year’s-days to tax-year-beginnings specifically so this suspicion is really based on what i’ve observed in historical documents more than anything concrete. if anyone has actually researched this, please let me know, because i’d be very interested in hearing about it.)

anyway. if 1. that’s true and 2. we assume the tachonises are using the halovars’ idea of ‘the new year’ thanks to that alliance, that’s six months for the tachonis plan to come to fruition. on the other hand, if it’s not true and the new year is the dead of winter like ours is - which, being the season of dead things, i can easily see being peak tachonis power time and thus an argument that they’d be using their understanding of the new year for their own power plot - then yikes, three months, that’s not a lot of time to figure out what’s happening - or to stop it.

#the other common new year dates were 1st january - frequently still called new year's day even if the year didn’t turn then - and easter #in records the day chosen was pretty much down to the scribe and whichever day they/their community/patron used #and yes you are correct this can make dating events pretty difficult sometimes #it’s less of a problem with the big ones you can cross-reference #but with the really small local stuff and accounts? it can get tough #you just have to figure out which one your scribe is using - hopefully they left you enough context clues - and go from there #also! a reblog was absolutely appropriate don’t worry!!!#and also!!ing is what tumblr *is*#i'm personally very happy to have theories added to/disproven/challenged &t #especially if it’s because i’ve missed something or someone has a different interpretation of the source to my own #the fun is in the earnest enjoyment of things #and what better way to enjoy something than to think about it constantly and analyse it in depth?#critical role #cr c4 #critical role campaign 4 #cr speculation #and also #medieval history #medieval calendars #early modern history #early modern calendars #thanks to that historical dating tangent in the middle there
