❝    not  necessarily  ,    no  ,    but  i’m  finding  it  hard  to  see  how  living  in  a  world  without  them  could  be  a  good  thing  .  .  .    it’s  been  years  and  the  world  still  seems  like  such  a  scary  place  to  be  .    ❞

            once  the  other  had  left  ,    anna  was  sliding  the  heels  of  her  feet  ,    deciding  that  barefoot  was  better  with  all  these  cracks  in  the  dock  .    she  wondered  why  the  cut  didn’t  get  the  maintenance  it  needed  .    after  all  ,    they  were  supposed  to  be  one  whole  community  ;    but  somewhere  along  the  way  ,   the  alliance  was  lost  ,    it  was  a  tale  as  old  as  time  .    perhaps  ,    maybe  ,    it  would  be  something  she  could  bring  up   at  a  board  meeting  .    sure  ,    the  school  board  didn’t  have  much  say  over  proper  care  of  the  island  .  .  .    but  at  least  teachers  listened  .    anna  was  pulled  from  her  thoughts  as  the  other  spoke  ,    brows  furrowing  immediately  as  she  searches  her  pockets  .    everything  exactly  where  she  had  put  them  last  .    ❝  if  that’s  a  joke  about  how  kooks  are  scared  pogues  are  going  to  steal  from  them  then  you’ve  got  the  wrong  kook  .    plus  ,    i  keep  all  my  stuff  locked  in  my  car  when  i  make  my  way  over  here  .   ❞

           ❝    well  ,    blind  hope  is  what  got  me  through  my  childhood  so  .  .  .    hopefully  it’ll  get  me  through  adulthood  too  .    ❞    she  laughs  ,   quickly  realizing  that  she  had  been  in  adulthoods  grasp  for  awhile  now  .    ❝    sometimes  i  wish  i  could  trade  places  with  one  of  my  students  .    oh  ,    what  it  would  be  like  to  find  joy  in  singing  to  rocks  again  ..    ❞    

          ❝    that  thing  !    ❞    she’s  not  very  helpful  ,    using  her  own  index  finger  to  gesture  towards  her  own  complexion  .    ❝    when  your  eyebrows  scrunch  together  and  your  lips  form  a  straight  line  .    that  thing  .   everything  alright  ?    ❞  

           ❝    they’re  all  looking  at  us  ,    aren’t  they  ?    ❞

           ❝    is  this  what  it  feels  like  to  be  growing  apart  ?    ❞

           ❝    it’s  clear  that  nothing  will  ever  be  the  same  again  .    ❞

           ❝    it’s  fine  .    i’m  good  .    i’ve  got  a  thick  skull  .    ❞

           ❝    if  you  don’t  want  me  to  follow  you  into  fire  ,    then  don’t  run  into  fire  !    ❞

            ❝    maybe  this  will  all  make  sense  when  i  am  older  .    ❞

            ❝    yep  .  .  .    something’s  wrong  .    you  do  that  when  something’s  wrong  .    ❞

            it  all  happened  so  fast  ,    her  heel  getting  caught  between  the  wooden  planks  of  the  dock  ,    forcefully  pushing  her  forward  .    tumbling  ,    tumbling  ,    tumbling  ,    until    ━    she  was  bringing  someone  else  down  with  her  .    chaotic  ,    unsteady  ,    and  incredibly   un  /  lady  -  like  .    anna  swallows  back  the  lump  in  her  throat  before  speaking   .         ❝    well  ,    this  is  awkward  .    ❞         she  laughs  nervously  ,         ❝    not  that  ,    no  ,    not  that  you’re  awkward  .    but  just  ‘cause  ,   well  ,    i’m  awkward  .    you’re  gorgeous  .    what  ,    w h a t ?    ❞
