Hii! I was wondering if you could make a post about the etymology of the name Druk (Zuko’s dragon)? I googled it but the result was kinda confusing 😭
What's in a Name: Druk
According to the Korra artbook, Druk is the offspring of Ran and Shaw, the dragons that taught Zuko and Aang the Dancing Dragon forms. Meaning the golden egg that Aang and Zuko found was probably baby Druk.
I bring this up because Zuko's dragon is actually named after the thunder dragons of Tibetan and Bhutanese mythology. Druk is also the Tibetan/Bhutanese word for thunder; this is due to thunder being attributed to a dragon's roar in Tibetan/Bhutanese folklore. In fact, a more literal translation of the word druk would be "cloud voice". Considering the cultural inspiration for the Air Nomads, it's likely that Aang had a hand in naming Druk.
In general, Druk's name creates a lot of interesting cultural and thematic connections:
Zuko's Blue Spirit mask is a "Dragon King" mask. The Dragon King is a rain dragon who can conjure up storms. Since Zuko's alter ego embodies a dragon of rain, it's fitting that he would name his animal companion after a dragon of thunder. Zuko clearly likes weather dragons.
Until Korra's time, lightning bending was a skill reserved only for the Fire Nation's royal family. Since there can't be thunder without lightning, Druk's name also alludes to his connection to Fire Nation royalty. It's even possible that Druk is also capable of lightning bending; after all, dragons are the original firebenders.
While Chinese culture attributes dragons to the cardinal direction of east, Tibetan culture attributes dragons to the cardinal direction of west. Druk's name is a subtle nod to Iroh's "Dragon of the West" legacy.
The name Druk is also significant in Vajrayana (Tibetan) Buddhism. Drukpa or "Thunder Dragon Lineage", is a school of thought in Vajrayana Buddhism. Also, the name Vajrayana literally means "The Thunderbolt Way" in Sanskrit, in which lightning is used as a metaphor for the "jolting" nature of enlightenment. Considering that Druk is the offspring of Ran and Shaw, who "enlightened" Aang and Zuko on the true nature of firebending, his name is quite fitting.
All in all, Druk is probably one of the best named characters in the entire ATLA franchise.
Like what I’m doing? Tips always appreciated, never expected. ^_^

Just finished Aoi's route in ToHeart!!! Ahaha, I've been really focusing in on the things I'm reading lately...? I don't entirely understand, but I will take advantage :D
Ahhhhh she really is so cute though...~~~ When she first showed up I just had to have the protagonist go help her out, and then the story just unfolded so naturally I found myself on her route even though I was planning on doing Serika first...! But she's sooooo cute and polite and sweet and heartwarming and also she could beat Everyone up :DDDDD
It's kind of a rare character type for a heroine, I think? Usually the tomboyish types are more down to earth and friendly and familiar. Instead, Aoi is kind of shy (when she's not gushing about mixed martial arts) and doubts herself too much and is so very proper and formal and Follows The Rules and pure-hearted and Earnest...!! I really really like characters like that, especially when they're not a generic Main Heroine patient childhood friend type! And I also really like sporty and hot-blooded types who believe in all the sorts of things they say in shounen anime!!! So it's no wonder that I loved her so much :D (...come to think of it, doesn't everything in this paragraph describe Best Boy Kanzaki Souma, too...? <333)
And the romance felt really natural once we got into it, too!! The protagonist of this game has a lot more personality than I expected? And sometimes he can be pretty teasing or grouchy about school and the like rather than being purely just a nice person. (Though I don't mind protagonists like that!) He was clearly drawn to Aoi from the beginning, and he did have a little pre-existing interest in martial arts, and he wanted to support her and help her achieve her goals just as much as I did...!
It's also kinda funny to me that in a lot of ways he was basically her cheerleader? Or, like, the cute sports club manager type character...? I mean, he did end up training with her after a little while, but it's still very clear at the end that he's got a long way to go to beat her :'D But I thought it was interesting that in motivating her and trying to be sensible when she wants to train too hard and the like - stuff I more associate with female characters - she described him as being, like, Steady and Reliable: like her Rock. Very masculine!!! Not complaining: just thought it was an interesting thought, heh.
And it did capture well that overall sense of like... youth, and making bonds, and young love. :) It's entirely generic in its content, bar the surprise factor of this cute little kouhai being a mixed martial arts fanatic, but who cares?! Young love is a wonderful theme which deserves to be written about an eternity of times...! And this is a good example of it: mundane, and idealistic, and a little comedic at times, and impossibly sweet. <3
I also still really love the art style...! It really is immersive, the way they utilise the camera angles (but they're also not afraid to cut away or try more poetic shots from time to time) and it just - adds a bit more visual interest...? I think that's part of why I could concentrate on it so easily! They add a lot of nice lighting effects that really ramp up the idyllic atmosphere, but don't go overboard IMO! And I love how the eyes are so starry...~ And ahhh, Aoi's hair is such a perfect shade of periwinkle in the sunlight...!! <3
Next up, I should proooobably go back and do Serika properly, heh. (Even if I already feel bad at the prospect of not helping out Aoi... :( ) I don't think there's anyone in the cast I'm not at least somewhat looking forward to reading? I definitely want to check out Multi at some point - she seems to be the most iconic character from the game (and the easiest to find merch for!) but she's similar in several ways to Aoi so I want to mix it up a bit first. (And of course I totally veered around the really popular character to the not-so-popular one instead, ahah... n.n;;)
I'm happy I bought it 💖

The captions are also really cute, although they mostly describe what’s in each photo:
Bulbasaur: Somehow, nomming on my clothes… has become a weird habit of theirs.
Venusaur: That hasn’t changed now that they’ve grown, but they’re very gentle.
Charmander: It’s my first attempt, but I made a plushie so that he wouldn’t get lonely.
Charizard: That plushie seems to be his favorite even now.
Squirtle: Squirtle’s a bit timid and hides behind me at the smallest things.
Blastoise: Looks like they’re scared of the first Pichu they’ve seen. You’re not really hiding!

okay. whatever this means.
ok while we're here. like. it is kinda crazy how fascist frieren is right?
like the straightforward reading of it IS fascist! "look at me a cutesy little (extremely powerful) pastoralist elf who wants nothing more than to live my happy life when these SUBVERSIVES that the REST OF SOCIETY TOLERATES exist!"
it's not even like. being subtle! it goes from like 3 episodes in of "haha cutesy elfslop" to "ontologically evil p-zombies exist in this world and you have to kill them all. full stop" it's not even drawing parts of it! it's the whole fucking hog all the way in all the time!
and like. even past that? it's not good! its literally not good.
That's what I've been saying!
1. It's not fascist, it's set in a universe where what you call fascism (killing ontologically evil entities) is correct and good, as it would be
2. When the demons speak to each other, they are acting
3. It's a good show.
ok so first of all its not good. but im not even arguing if what the elf does in story is correct or not! all im saying is that if like. dan "ideas" olson made an anime to demonstrate how fascist regimes would make media to embody their ideals he would make frieren and like. somehow this is not the first thing people discuss when they talk about it???
I know, it's wild, right? And it happens so fucking quickly, like, what, 4 or 5 episodes before it's literally stealing plot elements from Norman Spinrad's Iron Dream and like, *nobody* really even brought it up for a long time.
And sure, it has uncomfortable and direct links to real life fascist thought, but at least it's done in a way that will make most of the conflicts of the show incredibly boring and pointless and that make you think the writers don't pay attention to their own characters.
Like, if people had reacted to it like they react to Goblin Slayer that's one thing, but people acted like it was a good show for so long!
Also genuinely, objectively the first demon Frieren kills uses language to gather information about what's happened since he's been imprisoned. The later demons discuss what tactics they are going to use against the humans and why certain lies work on humans. If they were just parrots that would actually be potentially interesting on some level, but they aren't.
'No, it's not fascist, it's just a world designed to make fascism correct.'

SVSSS AU/fic prompt where cultivators are bonded to swords mind and soul.
After Zheng Yang is reforged the bond to LBH reawakens.
LBH feeling bond reconnecting and seeing through Zheng Yang seeing his Shizun kneeling before sword mound constantly. Every time he checks his Shizun is there looking tired and so sad.
At this point he is no longer concerned about winning Shizun back or proving himself it is clear Shizun cared for him. He cared for him so much!

Disney is doing crazy things in the japanese mobile game sphere rn
you may be familiar with disney twisted wonderland, the gacha game in which various disney villains are used as direct inspiration for handsome anime boys. well that game was so successful that disney is trying to do it again but this time they're just animeboyifying whatever
here's mickey, goofy, donald, and chip & dale. yeah they turned mickey & friends into anime boys. they're an idol unit or something. they're technically not anime boy versions of the source characters, they have different names. mickey's guy is "Neo Michel". not michael, michel, like he's french. chip & dale are "Ruska Moncrief" and "Ranka Monk", they have different last names, they're not brothers anymore so that they can be yaoibait instead, anyways this post isn't actually about these guys I'm just setting the stage for the actual humanizations I wanted to show you
They also did monsters inc. And. Well it's obvious from the designs who mike and sully are. but you will also notice. the blonde one on the left. with glasses. monsters inc is kind of famously about just the two guys so they didn't really have a lot of other non-villain characters to take anime boys inspiration from, I guess, so, well,
Yeah it's her. they made an anime boy version of the mean receptionist slug. her name is roz btw, as all of boygachagame twitter has become extremely aware of in the past 3 days as we speculated prior to the release of the full image who tf the third guy was. the anime boy's name is "noah slugger". at this point no parody of the types of things gacha games will make gijinkas of will ever be able to live up to what disney is officially spending their own real money on designing
Awesome cartoon otaku tweet
