having the Aviation Accident Investigations Autismā¢ļø has actually done wonders for the way I process and respond to my own fuck-ups
And I don't just mean "oh, my little work mistake is actually nothing compared to a fiery crash that kills people," either. The reason commercial flight is so many orders of magnitude safer than any other form of transportation is because after every accident and incident, an independent regulatory body investigated it with the express goal of figuring out exactly what happened, why, and how to prevent the same thing from ever happening againānot to root out which person deserved the blame or the liability.
It's a simple, shockingly effective idea. It's also worlds away from how most people approach their own mistakes and the mistakes of others.
Because itās never just one personās fault. And even when it is, it still isnāt.Ā
The sharpest, best-trained pilots make worse decisions when they're tired or sick or stressed out, so there's two of them. The most dedicated and experienced air traffic controllers garble an instruction over the radio sometimes, so pilots are trained to always repeat clearances back to catch misunderstandings quickly. The best and brightest maintenance mechanic still overlooks a screw or misconnects a wire once or twice in her career, so aircraft systems are built with two or three or four layers of redundancy, and pilots are exhaustively trained to deal with failures safely.Ā
Everyone eventually has a bad day. Every component breaks down. Every computer gets a bad a Windows update and spirals into a reboot doom loop. If itās possible for one personās mistake to domino into a mushroom cloud of a fuckup, then that task is too critical to be one person's sole responsibility. The accident sequence starts with the design of the systemāso how do you improve the system to keep it from happening again?
oh yeah. The āmodern commercial aviation is the safest form of transportā thing only applies to planes, btw. A helicopter is a beautiful metal horse that wants to break its legs and die so so so badly
one time a guy friend told me he was quitting league of legends and literally two weeks later she was on estrogen. these events are intrinsically connected in my mind.
There is still time [to stop playing league of legends]
I wonder if that's why I knew so early, because I never played it
oh me? I lost my penis when I ignored the "Don't touch the machinery" sign. you know how it is
you all hate me and my penis. I mean penisnt
I made the mistake of looking at this while taking an order over the headset at work and started laughing really hard and had to gather myself for a second and my coworkers kept trying to look at my phone to see what I was laughing at
nearly ran a redlight thinking about >penis ripped off by penis gnomes on my way home from work
putting this post on every machine from now on thank you

the place I work at remodeled these split gendered restrooms into āinclusive restroomsā and never told us what they meant while construction was ongoing. I need you to know every atom of potential criticism or whining that couldāve happened disappeared when people found out this meant we got 10 fully separate private bathrooms with sinks inside. Iāve not heard a single person crack a joke about the inclusive signage. this is the world TERFs are trying to steal from you
This is called a "superloo" and terfs are actively trying to steal this from you, in the UK they changed bathroom regulations to mean new buildings have to prioritise gendered toilets rather than build superloos.
This also upset a lot of architects and designers who like the superloos. They're also typically more like small rooms rather than having doors you can look under.
I have a friend who was strongly against inclusive bathrooms because he felt that ābathroom stalls are already really exposed due to how theyāre constructed, so no wonder women donāt want men in the same bathrooms as themā and when I pointed out that we could just⦠build better bathrooms⦠with less exposed stalls, he got really quiet and then said āhonestly that sounds so much better, but there must be some problem with building them like that, because otherwise wouldnāt we already be doing it?ā BESTIE we are. WE ARE. Old-style bathrooms are cheaply made, poorly designed, and all around bad. Havenāt you noticed that menās restrooms rooms get weirdly sticky? Havenāt you noticed that womenās restrooms end up with giant lines? This is because these rooms are architecturally awful. And we can do better now, because we know more! And we are!!! People are actively designing better bathrooms that address known problems, and guess what: those bathrooms are āinclusiveā in the same way that curb-cuts are inclusive. It doesnāt matter if the ramp was built for a wheelchair or a stroller; it doesnāt matter if the bathrooms were designed specifically for gender inclusivity or just because fall-apart-if-you-sneeze-on-them metal stall dividers with giant ass peek gaps suck. We can in fact improve our built environment to better meet our needs. Stop cutting off your nose to spite your face; stop settling for less just because someone else might also enjoy it.
"There's no platonic explanation for this" <-you need to be nicer to your friends. Right now

Canāt believe my job makes me do my job on the days I am scheduled to work my job what the fuck
Self-Discipline Isnāt Always the Answer
So I wasnāt really taught to brush my teeth every day as a kid. So I didnāt. I got to be an adult and realizedĀ āhmm teeth are expensive I need to start brushing themā and brushing my teeth twice a day has been on my actual to do list every single day of my college career. Itās a habit I needed to build.
Have I successfully done it? Absolutely not. Iām pretty good about doing it at least once a day, but some days it just doesnāt happen. Itās not that I forget usually, I just had some aversion I couldnāt figure out, until last week.
Iām at the grocery store, in the toothpaste aisle with my roommate, and I complain about how much I hate mint. I FUCKING HATE THE TASTE OF MINT. The taste and the smell, any kind of minty thing in any form, I HATE IT. But literally everyĀ āadultā toothpaste in the aisle was some type of minty disgusting nonsense. And my roommate was likeĀ āyou know you could like get kidsā toothpaste? You like bubblegum right?ā
And yāall, it was like the clouds parted. I got some strawberry bubblegum kidsā toothpaste. I brushed my teeth with it and it was a whole new experience. I have successfully brushed twice a day every day since, because the mental block I had towards it is gone!Ā
I thought my lack of brushing was just a moral failing on my part; I was too lazy, too undisciplined, to build a good habit. But really? I just hate the taste of mint so much I didnāt want to brush my teeth.
This made me realize that when presented with a change you want to make, a habit you want to build, if youāre encountering resistance in yourself, you should lean into that resistance and really investigate whatās causing it, then work on accommodating that.Ā
Say you hate washing dishes so they pile up and then youāre overwhelmed by how many you have to do. Why do you hate it? Deep down, what about it do you dislike? Is touching wet food super gross for you? Try thick rubber gloves while youāre washing. Does the sound of dishing clanking together grate your nerves? Do them with headphones in and turned up loud. Do you hate the smell? Light some candles, spray some air freshener.Ā
Do these things instead of gritting your teeth and forcing yourself, then ultimately failing and getting discouraged by yourĀ ālack of self-disciplineā
TL;DR: When a task is consistently hard for you, relying on self-discipline, forcing yourself, and gritting through doesnāt always work. Lean in and listen to your discomfort, and find what makes the task hard, then try to accommodate that. Also, mint toothpaste is gross.

Executive Dysfunction Strategy: Prepare an Action
With my type of executive dysfunction, often the biggest problem is just starting things. I know the floor needs to be vacuumed. I know the recycling needs to be taken out. I know I need to start cooking the stew so I can eat it later. But I just canāt seem to start it.
On the other hand, If the cat asks me for food, itās easy to get up and feed him. If someone asks me to do something or just says ādo it nowā, I can usually do it. I just need that trigger.Ā
So hereās a strategy lifted from Dungeons and Dragons: preparing an action. During combat, a player can, instead of taking an action on their turn, prepare a specific action to be taken when a specific trigger happens (ie, the character is hiding behind a door and if an enemy walks through the door, theyāll attack).
So I know a task needs to be done, but I canāt start doing it. I choose a trigger I know will happen soon, and I prepare my action. Examples:
The next time I get up to go to the bathroom, Iāll also wash the dishes.
The next time the cat asks me to feed him, Iāll clean the kitchen floor first.
When this video Iām watching ends, Iāll start writing that article.
When the clock hits 12:30 (I can even set an alarm), Iāll start cooking lunch.
Just about any combination of triggers and activities can work. Itās not 100% effective, but it definitely helps. Maybe it will help some of you as well.
sometimes i see posts with advice and tips for mental illness and the comments are a lot of āif only i could keep it goingā or āi tried once and liked it but couldnāt do it every day so I gave up.ā i feel like thereās a pressure to do self care āperfectlyā or ācorrectlyā and that if you donāt youāre supposed to give up?
itās okay if you donāt do the thing every day! i love journaling, but iāll journal every day for a week and then wonāt pick it up for months. that doesnāt mean i donāt still like it the times i do pick it up. just cause iām not able to do it every day doesnāt mean itās not helpful!
or like with to do lists- i RARELY actually finish one. iāll usually get the first two items done and then call it a day. but itās so nice to have my tasks planned out and not cluttering up my head! even if i donāt accomplish all my goals iām way less stressed
iām also terrible about not packing lunches and then skipping meals. that doesnāt mean i should give up trying cause i donāt do it every day! it just means that i should continue to do it when i can, cause some packed lunches are better than none
self care and management isnāt all or nothing. do it at your own pace in a way that works for you. there isnāt one right way to self care. thereās only your right way

i really im absolutely astounded at the phenomenal job that MIB did not to be racist against aliens, despite being a movie about secret agents chasing evil aliens. that scene where jay helps an alien mother to give birth is probably one of the most humanizing moments for an Other ive seen in a movie ever.
like it grabs the body snatcher trope from the cold war "aliens are all around you, hidden in diguzise, they could be any one of us!" and then it says "and theyre just people, theyre literally just people trying to live their lives and thats fine"
you literally have a whooe scene where a cop stands out because he says "i dont care how menacibg or threatning someone looks im not going to shoot them if there is a reasonable explination for what theyre doing, one is sneezing and one is just doing excercise", and that is the guy that gets aproved to join MIB.
The movie has a real love for NYC and immigrant culture as a part of that. The opening scene where K welcomes the undocumented immigrants to the United States. One alien greets another and says he's ordered him pierogi. A lot of them are refugees from their home worlds who just want to survive.
Human Is is a 1955 Philip K. Dick sci-fi short story where a guy goes to another planet for work and when he comes back to Earth his personality has flipped from an asshole to a sweet, kind, considerate man. Everyone's immediately convinced that an alien has taken over his body, this goes all the way to court, and in court his wife testifies that she's noticed no changes at all and so the charges are dropped.
And then there's a bit right at the end of the story as the wife and the husband are walking out of court:
Jill turned abruptly. "What is your name? Your real name."
The man's gray eyes flickered. He smiled a little, kind, gentle smile. "I'm afraid you would not be able to pronounce it. The sounds cannot be formed..."
Jill was silent as they walked along, deep in thought. The city lights were coming on all around them. Bright yellow spots in the gloom. "What are you thinking?" the man asked.
"I was thinking perhaps I will still call you Lester," Jill said. "If you don't mind."
"I don't mind," the man said. He put his arm around her, drawing her close to him. He gazed down tenderly as they walked through the thickening darkness, between the yellow candles of light that marked the way. "Anything you wish. Whatever will make you happy."
And I. God. There's something there. A soupcon of monsterfuckery. To tell your partner in a moment of intimacy that yes, you're something so inhuman that the lips you're stealing can't speak your actual name. You're a parasite that not only had the ability to burrow under this man's skin and take over his life, but you were so desperate to escape a dead, dry, blasted planet that you did.
And for your partner to then turn around and go "I know, I've always known, and I love you" is just. God I know it's not a great Dick story but something about it is making me lose my mind
Also it's explicitly stated that the guy's consciousness is still alive and preserved on the alien planet. Jill is told this and then proceeds to defend the alien anyways, ensuring that her husband's brain is stuck in a jar on a desert planet. You love to see it

I was tidying up a room, andĀ right in the middle of it I saw a massive grandfather clock. At some point I noticed it had the AO3 symbol on it, so obviously I decided to take a picture and post it on Tumblr.
Except I accidentally captioned it, āguys check this out, Iāve got the one and only AO3 grandfather cock.ā
I realized immediately, but by the time I reblogged it with āCLOCKā in all caps, it was too late. It had already done numbers on this hellsite.
