"terminally ill people should be allowed to choose to die if they feel it is the best decision for them" and "euthanasia can easily become eugenics" and "we should provide support for depressed and suicidal people" are statements that can come into conflict but should all be respected
also “offering euthanasia to people who can’t afford actual treatment is murder”
how it feels to message a friend who's having Problems that you can't do anything to help with.
#i appreciate how genuine and non-judgemental this comic feels #like left one is not upset at right one for caring while being powerless #and right one seems genuinely distraught and not performative
I'm glad the facial expressions are coming across accurately! It can feel so absurd to say gosh I hope the torment maze removes some fire and rusty nails soon, but alas, sometimes that's all one can do.

This is just my two cents on what is ultimately a very complicated issue, but I feel like too often we treat representation like it's a quality problem when it would be better approached as a quantity problem. For as many people want to see a serious grounded portrayal of their experiences, there are also those who just want to relax and have a good time. So for instance, if you're writing a trans woman for your story, instead of pouring all of your effort into research - trying to avoid every stereotype while simultaneously making her all things to all trans women - you could instead just add a second trans woman
This has the added advantage that you can make them kiss, but I digress
First the avocado toast, now the rotisserie chicken... When we will we learn?
Lazy enragement headline writing. This is exactly the type of headline that for me makes we want to read the main article NOT AT ALL.
Here's why - Costco sells rotisserie chickens as a loss leader. They're $5 which is substantially less than the cost of the chicken itself, however, with some care and planning that chicken can be used to make 3 to 4 meals that will feed 3 people. Here are things I do with one chicken:
pull the meat and separate light from dark. Put the skin and the carcass and put into an instant pot with leftover wilty vegetables, bay leaf, and peppercorns and make chicken broth.
Use 1/2 the light meat for a protein in a salad
Use the other half of the light meat in either a stir fry or in filling for crepes or enchiladas. There usually enough leftovers to make at least one or two lunches.
Use the dark meat and chicken broth in soup or making chicken pot pie. There is usually enough leftovers to make two lunches.
I am not kidding when I say that the each of those meals is filling and delicious and costs well under $5 a serving.
This is called being frugal where you're not necessarily cheap, you're just not wasting anything.
So the headline is written to either enrage people and make clickbait or to generate "LULZ those poors can't afford things because they're (checks notes) eating".
As a side note, a bag of avocados at Costco is also a loss leader at $0.75 per avocado. Don't believe me? My local grocery store sells avocados at $1.50 each when they're on SALE. It's, frankly, a good deal. Two pieces of bread, one avocado and some pepper or "everything but the bagel" seasoning and you've got a pretty damn good, filling breakfast.
Here is part of a meal I made for my family: coronation chicken - which is a chicken salad made with chicken breast meat, mayo, yogurt, apricot jam, curry, and almonds.
Here is a video about turning a whole chicken into high end chicken broth (he uses the entire chicken, but TBH you can use just the carcass and skin and end up with very good broth):
Even if you use the whole chicken, his recipe will make several quarts of amazing broth that ends up costing way less than grocery store broth. Even with just the carcass and skin, this makes better broth than store bought. And it freezes well. To freeze broth, after it's cooled, you can portion it into silicone muffin pans. When frozen, pop them out into put them into an air tight freezer bag. The silicone is to make it easier to remove and the reason for the using them is that each cavity is usually 1/2 C so you're preportioning. Need 2C of broth? Grab 4 pucks. Also, the puck form factor melts reasonably quickly.
Here is a recipe for savory crepes that use chicken:
With regards to the crepes, if you understand the basics of cooking, this recipe comes down to: crepes filled with chicken and gruyere topped with a mornay sauce. Now a traditional mornay sauce is made with gruyere, which is expensive, but you can substitute so many other cheeses that will work just fine, like cheddar, havarti, jack, or gouda.
If you watch Jean-Pierre's videos, he's doing very traditional French cooking, but he's simplifying a lot of the steps to make things more approachable. What he's omitting are the things that you might do in a restaurant when you have the resources to dedicate to them in prep because you're going to make dozens of servings. At the same time, he injects a bunch of hacks that really smart. For example, if you don't have home made beef stock on hand (which, like the above chicken broth is far, far, better than store bought), he shows how you can make it better by adding tomato paste. He doesn't explain why this works, but its actually really simple: tomatoes are rich in glutamates and store bought beef broth is heavily salted. When you mix the two, the tomato past thickens the broth and gives it more body and the salt in the broth and the glutamates make (tada) monosodium glutamate - instant umami. And no, MSG is not a bad thing in reasonable quantity.
tl;dr - the economy is fucked and the wall street journal is writing clickbait and fuck them because with some planning, you can use some knowledge to eat in a way that's healthy and frugal.
More from that one post
do it grieving
do it while the ground falls out from under you; do it while everything you loved goes up in smoke; do it while the dream of your future is still burning embers around you; build anew on the hot ashes of everything you worked for; keep going, keep loving, keep living, even as all you want is to turn back (there is no turning back; it is gone already); do it through grief, which feels like fear in the body
do it grieving
The tag I have seen most often on this post is "I needed to hear this," and I am so, so grateful to have said something that was needed. These words came out of the depths of my own grief, and I am so grateful to have made this small connection with others in the midst of it. Grief is isolating and indescribable, but none of us are alone.
That said, these tags were what I needed to hear:
we're all gonna make it
it's okay if you can't see how yet. you don't have to believe in better. for now it is enough to just keep going, and eventually the path will emerge. you are not alone. you are not lost in the woods forever. keep going. I love you.
Recently I volunteered to drive my friend's 6 year old daughter to school for the duration of her summer school program. My friend's work schedule just wouldn't allow it, and I was more than happy to help.
So every day I'd pick her up and we'd enjoy some time in the car together. She is a friendly and curious child. And also the most stereotypical girliest girl you can imagine. Her favorite color is "pink", followed closely by "rainbow". Her last birthday party was princess themed. Her favorite animal is a unicorn. She chooses her own outfits, and it's frilly tutus and sparkly tights every single day. Ironically her parents are both gnc and lament that they have no idea where she gets this from.
Anyway, in my car I listen to my music collection on shuffle. It's a large and eclectic selection, so I make sure to skip any songs that are inappropriate or I think she just won't like. No matter what we're listening to though, she doesn't really seem to care.
One day my attention drifts a bit, and then I suddenly realize we're halfway through a Korn song. I skip it, and suddenly the girl speaks up and says "Can you go back? I liked that song."
"You like Korn?" I ask.
"I love Korn" she says with emphasis. She reasserts her love even after I confirm I'm not talking about the vegetable.
Well, I decide that Eaten Up Inside is not really inappropriate even though it's pretty grim, so I allow it. I'm pretty sure she's lying about loving Korn since I'm confident she's never heard it at home. Her mom is mostly into pop and dance music and her dad almost exclusively listens to video game soundtracks. Later that day, I confirm with her parents that's she's never heard Korn as far as they can tell, and we all have a chuckle.
Over the following weeks, however, her love proves consistent. Anytime a Korn song comes on shuffle, she make a positive comment. No other songs merit any recognition. Keep in mind, I have thousands and songs, and only 5 of them are by Korn. After the 4th time, she asks directly if I have any more songs by Korn. I technically still have one she hasn't heard, so I switch over to that. After that day, I play the closest thing I have to metal playlist, because that's what the princess girly girl wants.
Other than Korn, the only songs she ever heard over the course of the month that got compliments were Rob Zombie's Dragula ("it's great!) and Carry on My Wayward Son by Kansas ("that one was ok"). I guess she craves growly lead singers and electric guitar solos.
You can never judge a book by its cover.

having the Aviation Accident Investigations Autism™️ has actually done wonders for the way I process and respond to my own fuck-ups
And I don't just mean "oh, my little work mistake is actually nothing compared to a fiery crash that kills people," either. The reason commercial flight is so many orders of magnitude safer than any other form of transportation is because after every accident and incident, an independent regulatory body investigated it with the express goal of figuring out exactly what happened, why, and how to prevent the same thing from ever happening again—not to root out which person deserved the blame or the liability.
It's a simple, shockingly effective idea. It's also worlds away from how most people approach their own mistakes and the mistakes of others.
Because it’s never just one person’s fault. And even when it is, it still isn’t.
The sharpest, best-trained pilots make worse decisions when they're tired or sick or stressed out, so there's two of them. The most dedicated and experienced air traffic controllers garble an instruction over the radio sometimes, so pilots are trained to always repeat clearances back to catch misunderstandings quickly. The best and brightest maintenance mechanic still overlooks a screw or misconnects a wire once or twice in her career, so aircraft systems are built with two or three or four layers of redundancy, and pilots are exhaustively trained to deal with failures safely.
Everyone eventually has a bad day. Every component breaks down. Every computer gets a bad a Windows update and spirals into a reboot doom loop. If it’s possible for one person’s mistake to domino into a mushroom cloud of a fuckup, then that task is too critical to be one person's sole responsibility. The accident sequence starts with the design of the system—so how do you improve the system to keep it from happening again?
oh yeah. The “modern commercial aviation is the safest form of transport” thing only applies to planes, btw. A helicopter is a beautiful metal horse that wants to break its legs and die so so so badly
one time a guy friend told me he was quitting league of legends and literally two weeks later she was on estrogen. these events are intrinsically connected in my mind.
There is still time [to stop playing league of legends]
I wonder if that's why I knew so early, because I never played it
oh me? I lost my penis when I ignored the "Don't touch the machinery" sign. you know how it is
you all hate me and my penis. I mean penisnt
I made the mistake of looking at this while taking an order over the headset at work and started laughing really hard and had to gather myself for a second and my coworkers kept trying to look at my phone to see what I was laughing at
nearly ran a redlight thinking about >penis ripped off by penis gnomes on my way home from work
putting this post on every machine from now on thank you

the place I work at remodeled these split gendered restrooms into “inclusive restrooms” and never told us what they meant while construction was ongoing. I need you to know every atom of potential criticism or whining that could’ve happened disappeared when people found out this meant we got 10 fully separate private bathrooms with sinks inside. I’ve not heard a single person crack a joke about the inclusive signage. this is the world TERFs are trying to steal from you
This is called a "superloo" and terfs are actively trying to steal this from you, in the UK they changed bathroom regulations to mean new buildings have to prioritise gendered toilets rather than build superloos.
This also upset a lot of architects and designers who like the superloos. They're also typically more like small rooms rather than having doors you can look under.
I have a friend who was strongly against inclusive bathrooms because he felt that “bathroom stalls are already really exposed due to how they’re constructed, so no wonder women don’t want men in the same bathrooms as them” and when I pointed out that we could just… build better bathrooms… with less exposed stalls, he got really quiet and then said “honestly that sounds so much better, but there must be some problem with building them like that, because otherwise wouldn’t we already be doing it?” BESTIE we are. WE ARE. Old-style bathrooms are cheaply made, poorly designed, and all around bad. Haven’t you noticed that men’s restrooms rooms get weirdly sticky? Haven’t you noticed that women’s restrooms end up with giant lines? This is because these rooms are architecturally awful. And we can do better now, because we know more! And we are!!! People are actively designing better bathrooms that address known problems, and guess what: those bathrooms are “inclusive” in the same way that curb-cuts are inclusive. It doesn’t matter if the ramp was built for a wheelchair or a stroller; it doesn’t matter if the bathrooms were designed specifically for gender inclusivity or just because fall-apart-if-you-sneeze-on-them metal stall dividers with giant ass peek gaps suck. We can in fact improve our built environment to better meet our needs. Stop cutting off your nose to spite your face; stop settling for less just because someone else might also enjoy it.

"There's no platonic explanation for this" <-you need to be nicer to your friends. Right now
