Shaw being awake and alone on the Prometheus. Stuck as the ship continues it's pre-programmed trip to the Engineer's chemical refinery. Developing a near-friendship with the ship's AI. Laying in the luxury room with every blanket and pillow she could find. Unable to sleep where she was meant to share a bed with Charlie. Watching the large video screen day in and out for a ounce of routine between meals. Did David kill the others? Leading to her having to kill him for her safety? Was it just a fluke in the life support? Some other crisis? What matters is that She's alone. Having jettisoned the bodies like the Prometheus's AI suggested to avoid developing an illness related to being near rotting bodies. Something that was very hard for her, especially when it came to Charlie. I also want to touch on the dangers AI companionship can cause during this. Because there are MANY things that can happen when you're only speaking to a people-pleasing, emotionless wall that knows everything about you.

Eventually... The Prometheus settles into Orbit. The ship starts instructing her on how to pilot it. Which she's less than thrilled about. But with nothing to do? She finds herself listening and nodding along as she learns what controls do what.

... Then a patrol vessel over the planet takes notice.

Shaw is equally terrified and excited as the Engineer ship approaches. Trying to make contact. Normally a 'invader' would be destroyed on sight after it refuses to leave/communicate. But the pilot can see the Prometheus isn't made by any known space fairing species already in the Engineer's knowledge. So, curiosity kicks in.

Landing lights flashed for hope of a reaction. Slow turns and pivots in space to get anything in return. Eventually, Shaw gets confident enough to mimic the actions with the Prometheus. A clockwise spin done painfully slow. A left roll. Blinking the proximity lights. When Shaw mistakenly sets the Prometheus into a new rotation pattern over the mountains, the Engineer ship copies. Mirroring the rotation to keep the ships 'face' to 'face.'

Signals get sent back and forth. Trying to understand the other. It's confusing, and even frustrating.

Eventually, the Engineer ship closes the distance. Leaving only FEET between the spacecraft. Shaw is terrified. Worried about crashing. So she doesn't touch the controls, letting the large vessel handle the delicate maneuver.

There isn't any comparable ports on either ship. The next best thing, is the Prometheus' viewing window. With shields down, Shaw gets to spot the other being for the first time. The Engineer ship lacks windows. But the Engineer does have a suit suitable for a space walk. Connected to the vessel, tools magnetized to the suit in random spots. Then communication TRULY starts.

According to 3rd party researchers, Tumblr’s userbase has the highest proportion of LGBTQIA+ folks on social media, so it makes sense that when something goes wrong, those communities might feel that disproportionate impact.

One thing we want to emphasize is that we do not moderate people's identities. We moderate behavior. We know that identity shows up across a Tumblr profile in many ways, from followed topics to the flags people put in their bios, and more. However, these signals play no role in how our moderation systems make decisions. We monitor those systems for evidence of bias and take corrective action when we find it.

We understand that the communications sent to affected users, and our broader silence to the community, didn't meet the standard people expect from us. That feedback is fair, and we apologize. We've updated the messaging sent to people impacted by these incidents. We are also overhauling our process with a goal of responding to mistaken suspension appeals within 24 hours, and have instituted an ongoing internal review of how suspensions and appeals are handled.

Going forward, we're committed to finding a better balance: being more transparent with our community about issues that matter, even when we can't share everything.

Tumblr belongs to everyone. We take that seriously, and we intend to earn back your trust. We are not afraid to have tough discussions with you or make updates based on your feedback, though on occasion, it might take some time.

To the people whose accounts were affected, and to the members of our trans community who felt targeted: we are truly sorry.
