plus will is not too sensitive and that alone is not something he needs to work on. it’s his self esteem, his guilt, state of mind, and people/places/things he relies on that specifically cause that sensitivity to come out negatively. he also does not express himself to others in that way, which contributes to how “fragile” he might seem. but sensitivity is not a bad thing and very deeply who he is. of course bad situations won’t be as detrimental to his wellbeing, but not in spite of him being a Sensitive Kid
remember kids we’re will byers stans first and people second
He's so 😵💫

Will would love Mulholland Drive because it’s unsettling and gay just like him
and the masculinization of will is especially disheartening because of just how important it is to the themes of the show. he’s an effeminate gay man from a small conservative town in a show that takes place in the 80s, his own father tried to literally beat the gayness out of him, barely anyone in hawkins cared when he went missing because they just assumed it was a homophobic hate crime, he couldn’t even go to school without other children calling him slurs. will just existing as an openly fem gay man is inherently subversive and beautiful, and tbh probably the bravest things any character in the show has done. erasing his femininity and softness directly goes against everything he represents as a character.
i couldn’t agree more.
part of the issue i’ve observed is that fandoms for non canon ships largely rest on the notion that the characters are barbie dolls that can be changed around at a whim, but most non canon ships don’t have a canonically lgbt character like this! this is definitely a unique case that should be treated with more care and respect. as you said, will represents something VERY important.
will is will. he had to fight so hard to remain will in a world that pressured him to do otherwise, we want to see what makes him will remain. some people seem to fundamentally disagree with the point of his character, and i suppose that can’t be helped
not saying people should be limited in their creativity- never! - and obviously we can disagree about individual post canon ideas (for example: whether or not he would ever wear makeup, if so what type of look, in what circumstances, what would his style look like post canon, etc). that’s just fine. we use gender expression as a way to describe how people like will are viewed as a result of what they like and how they present and act. its a sociological idea. it should not be a rulebook. people are all different.
but the disgust and derision towards will exploring things that brought him shame is NOT it. his canon gentleness being mistaken for “weakness he needs to grow out of” is not it. things that traumatized him being forced on him is not it. that’s rhetoric one would expect from the general audience, not here. he can be multidimensional without his foundation being erased… canon manages to balance that decently well even with low screentime as he’s nurturing yet sassy, mischievous yet sweet, vulnerable yet protective.
thank you very much for the ask!!!
