November 2025 Postcard from Sidney Barbier - Fulbright Scholar - MS, Earth, Planetary, and Environmental Science at the University Grenoble Alpes 📍 Grenoble France 🌏
My name is Sidney Barbier. I received a Fulbright Study Award to pursue my master's degree in Earth, Planetary, and Environmental Science at the University Grenoble Alpes, located in Grenoble France. I am pursuing the specialization called The Climate: Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, and Cryosphere as I have a particular interest in glaciology and all things water. The 2-year. Master's program is focused on the study of processes operating at all scales in the Earth-Environment system. This program involves two mandatory internships to gain research experience giving rise to a defense and eventual dissertation.
In addition, I am a part of the TERRA thematic program focused on the social and environmental challenges associated with the ecological transition. This program has a heavy emphasis on the socio-economic aspects of sustainability and environmental science and the collaboration between ecology, climate and earth sciences and social sciences. I just recently finished a course in Ecological Economics where I am getting to take a new perspective on many pressing environmental issues.
I am currently taking almost all of my courses in full French, from fluid mechanics to geochemistry, and am also getting to gain experience in Python and R. My language skills are definitely improving and beyond my course work I have already been able to engage with the community through my new role in the Universe-Terre association, a student organization dedicated to environmental and sustainability issues on campus.
Grenoble, France has a global reputation for being one of the greenest cities in France. The city focuses on combining grassroots community organizing with policy-level activity. Grenoble uses 100% renewable energy, provides 60% local food, and has a focus on public transportation and waste diversion. It is so incredible to live in such a sustainable city and engage with the community that supports these initiatives. My hope is to learn from their practices, research, and society, and bring back recommendations, innovative ideas, and policies to be implemented here in the U.S. Grenoble is a microcosm of what a truly sustainable future, one centered around a circular economy and zero emissions, could look like. I will be able to gain a new perspective, and find ways to take this small example and scale it both locally and nationally in the U.S.
Studying at the Universite Grenoble-Alpes, I will have the opportunity to earn my master's degree in a field and program that will serve my educational and vocational dreams living in an amazing city filled with art, music, mountains, and sustainability!
