The existence of Ancalagon is horrifying in every way. To anything and everything he encounters and for himself.
Ancalagon is an anomaly. Far too large to live in any meaningful way. He was born to die in the War of Wrath and to take as much of the world with him as he could.
He is created from thousands of parts. He is erratic, fragmented. He is constantly in agony.
Dozens, perhaps hundreds died in his development. Elven thralls who were forced to aid in and die for the creation of a weapon meant to destroy their homes and people. Those some of his parts came from. Those who simply got too close.
Bones fracture when his wings expand, acrid blood falls from the sky, staining the rocks of Thangorodrim, long before EƤrendil lands a single wound to him
His flesh and bones poison the earth, the sky, the water.
His entire existence is cruel and sad and painful and destructive.

When FĆ«anor says to the Valar,
If I must break [the Silmarils] I shall break my heart, and I shall be slain; first of all the Eldar in Aman
the wording is important: not might break, or might be slain, but shall break, and shall be slain. He is expressing his certainty that breaking the Silmarils will kill him.
And I know that some people are a little hesitant to take FĆ«anorās word on this at face value, but the very next spoken line in the text is Mandos (!!!) saying, āNot the first.ā
Mandos is not disputing the part of FĆ«anorās statement where he says that breaking the Silmarils will kill him ā just the fact that FĆ«anor would then be the first in Aman to be slain, considering that FinwĆ« āunknown to FĆ«anorā had just been killed at Formenos by Melkor.
Anyways, I really donāt think that FĆ«anorās refusal to break the Silmarils / restore the Trees was out of greed for the Silmarilsā beauty or light or power. I think he declined to kill himself for the sake of re-lighting the Trees, which ā judging both by the Elvesā survival for years uncounted at Cuivienen and the fact that Valinor & the Valar didnāt cease to exist after the Trees were destroyedā were not really crucial to anyoneās survival.

A lot of the really funny moments in Lord of the Rings come from Tolkien playing with language like this, where we have relatively formal, archaic, āhighā language responded to with informal, modern,Ā ālowā language.Ā

trying to work out who would be the weak link at the fellowship garden barbecue. obviously not sam, frodo doesn't really cook but does bring a huge amount of expensive cheese and wine from bilbo's cellar so he's out. merry and pippin exceed expectations which are admittedly low. boromir and gimli bring insane quantities of meat and spend the whole time at the grill cooking it and flexing, which is befitting of these kind of things. might be legolas but i think he would bring a lot of mushrooms, herb marinades, salads etc which is a good balance which unfortunately leaves mr six pack and trail jerky aragorn son of arathorn. (gandalf arrives late with dessert)

i cannot stress enough that whenever i say Maglor is "dramatic" in any form, and especially Years of the Trees Maglor, i'm always picturing/referring not simply to "overdramatic", but to Howl from Howl's Moving Castle levels of "dramatic"

trying to write Feanor like no, he's not inherently evil. yes, they hate him, yes, he is locally loved. yes, he's fucking annoying. yes, they are envious. yes, they have reason to be. no, he's not an idiot (ignore That One Time). yes, he's clever and brilliant. yes, he's charming. no, that doesn't stop people from wanting to kill him.
Honestly when I imagine Maedhros in Himring, I imagine he absolutely never leaves the ramparts unless he's going to battle. He stands there brooding in Morgoth's general direction all day everyday, not stopping to eat or sleep. Fingon comes to visit, they are at the ramparts. They fuck right there on the ramparts in Morgoth's general direction. Maedhros drills on the ramparts, draws up battle plans on the ramparts, scolds his brothers on the ramparts, all of that jazz!
When he has to leave Himring behind he is most upset about not being allowed on those ramparts anymore. He tries it at Amon Ereb, but it's just not the same.

Anyway I think ElenwĆ« convinced Turgon to cross the Ice. This solves two problems for me: (a) why Turgon was opposed to FĆ«anor in the big Oath-swearing, Finweans-have-an-argument episode but chooses to go anyway, and (b) why he builds Tirion 2.0 in Middle-earth. He never wanted to be there. He went for ElenwĆ«ās sake, and now sheās dead, and he wants to go home. (Also it gives ElenwĆ« some fun agency.)
Then they are re-embodied and are furious with each other. They donāt want to be, but they are.

I adore the elves of Tolkien, because you read The Hobbit and you think oh, they're a little weird and fey-like. Then you read The Lord of the Rings and you're like they're very alien, but Thranduil just seems to be Like Thatā¢. Galadriel, Celeborn and Elrond are pretty chill actually. Yeah Glorfindel is like the strongest fighter ever and Cirdan's a little off-putting but they're most likely outliers. Legolas forgets he is surrounded by non-elves half the time and trolls the rest of the time, but otherwise he is not weirder than Aragorn.
And then you get to the Silmarillion. And you encounter the Noldor.
FĆ«anor "spirit so strong his body cremated itself" and Maedhros "got amputated for reasonsā¢ being suspended on one of the highest moutains and probably tortured by Evil Incarnate but got over it in a week". Fingolfin "calling Morgoth to a 1v1 seem like a reasonable solution" and Fingon "climbed Melkor's highest mountain right after having survived the most hostile, icy, treacherous cliffs in existence while singing, to rescue his estranged situationship". Finrod "teeth count as a plausible weapon against a werewolf" Felagund and Galadriel "just in it for the possible crown and this very pretty Sindar I just met".
And that's not even touching ElwĆ« "will marry a goddess at the first opportunity" Singollo or Luthien "sang so well the notoriously inflexible keeper of souls & Judge of the Valar let her and her man have another chance at life". Or whatever Ćarendil was on.
Reading about the elves of Tolkien when your first encounter with them is the Third Age brings the slow realisation that they are not wise and good and all-knowing. The most batshit crazy ones are just already in Mandos or Valinor (except Glorfindel, he cannot be Contained). They are actually the most chaotic people in the lengendarium and are trying very hard to leave behing a dignified image, and it's the funniest thing ever.
Feanorian lineups are apparently a rite of passage for silm artists, so I wanted to include Feanor and Nerdanel but they're on honeymoon.
