A long time ago, they used to be friends. Despite the fact that she was a Slytherin and he was a Hufflepuff, the two had gotten along well until fifth year when all of Hogwarts learned she had been lying the entire time; that she was the very thing all her friends despised, including Rabastan. She doubted even a time clash could help them go back. “Fancy seeing you here. I didn’t know that lapdogs traveled through time as well.”

Rabastan bristled, his teeth grit against each other. She didn’t get to talk to him like that, like he was beneath her. She was the liar, the filthy mudblood pretender after a station higher than she ever deserved. He was a Lestrange. How dare she?

“Overreacting? How can I be overreacting? I died.” Evan fell back into the cushions of the second home he was now forced into because his son was afraid he would ‘murder his wife and children’ and therefore couldn’t hang out there. As if he would ever kill his grandchildren. “Bloody hell, we need to fix this Rab. My reputation is in shambles. My son is married to a mudblood. My daughter is friends with that mudblood. Did the Rosiers go mad without me?”

Rabastan exhaled sharply through his nose. Evan had always been such a hot-head. The time jump had clearly only exasperated things. “You’re not dead now, are you?” Rab snapped. He was trying to stay calm, he was. Evan was making it difficult. “You’re not the only one whose life didn’t turn out they way they thought it would, Rosier.”

As hard as he’d tried to avoid learning of his fate, Rabastan still discovered the sort of mess he’d followed his brother into. The death of the Lestrange family’s respectability lay on both of them. Rab shuddered to think of all those years that future version of himself was forced to live in Azkaban for his failure. 

“We can’t change what’s happened, Evan.... But surely we can do better here and now.”

Hannah hadn’t meant to go on and on about the subject of time travel to a complete stranger but it was the topic that was most on her mind after what had happened. When he’d been rude though, she was taken aback. Sure, it could be seen as rude that she’d gone on and on with no regard to his time but that hadn’t been her intention. He’d just been flat out rude. 

“I didn’t mean to bother you. I just feel like we’re in a unique position and a unique time. Thought it might be something to talk about.” Shrugging her shoulders, she put her hands up in a surrender, in the hopes that maybe he’d go easy on her. “I think stranger things have happened than strangers talking to each other, is all.”

"I think, my dear, you need to realize there is a vast chasm between ‘not strange’ and ‘socially acceptable.’” Rabastan said, in that signature Lestrange patronizing tone. He’d done quite a bit of practicing as a child to get it perfect. Rabastan always felt he had to prove he was Lestrange enough. Even now, so far removed by both time and space from his parents. “Generally, when one is reading, they don’t expect a perfect stranger to go on a tirade about matters beyond either’s control. It happened. We’re here. Dwelling won’t change a thing.”

“That’s all very interesting,” he said, intonation flat. “But, you see, I don’t care.”
