It was long ago and it was far away
And it was so much better than it is today
The next time Vincent would enter his office, he would find a suspiciously exquisite bottle of cognac and a new pack of his usual brand of cigarettes sitting on his desk. With those, a sealed envelope embellished with perfume that read:

โWell, then, Iโll return shortly.โ
He made an effort to stand as slowly as he could while holding the baby.
โAnd her room isโฆ..first on the right?โ
It was hardly a question. That had been his room; he was convinced he could find it in his sleep.
He took Faye into the room and gently set her down in the crib. He turned on the baby monitor but it took him a minute to figure out the mobile. When he finally got it going, he stood beside the crib, watching the baby fight to keep her eyes open.
โYou know,โ he said to her. โI used to live here with your grandma. This was my room, too. If walls could talkโฆwell, I wouldnโt let you sleep here. Not just this room, but the whole house. Itโs seen a lot.โ
He hesitated to say more until he realized that a four month old baby wouldnโt understand or remember anything he said.
โYour grandma overdosed and died in that back bedroom. I tried to save her, but she was already dead when I found herโฆthatโs why I canโt go in thereโฆโ
He looked back down at Faye and she was out like a light. With a slow sigh, he straightened up and left the room, softly closing the door behind him.
When Reina heard Vincent through the monitor, she didn't think much of it at first; she carried on, pouring her own drink significantly less than his. But then her ear caught how much deeper his words got when speaking to the sleepy baby.
All she could do was stand in place, begging herself not to listen, to let him keep it between him and his daughter, but her legs were cemented to the floor. Is this what a deer caught in headlights felt like?
The moment it felt as if he were done, Reina was cut loose. She damn near skipped back into the kitchen with shaky hands to grab a couple more chocolate covered strawberriesโjust in case he might want one or two as well. She thought too harshly about the bowl's placement on the table as she sat, waiting for Vincent to return. She fixed her hair and took a deep breath.
โSee?โ He greeted her with a cocky smirk. โTold you it was easy. She was fast asleep before I even left the room.โ
He returned to the couch and sat down next to Reina, picked up his drink and took a deep swig.
"Maybe." She took her drink into her hands. "Or maybe it's because you're convincingly comforting. Who knows?"
She took an eager sip, hoping it would help take her mind off what she just fell witness to; she got comfortable against him, crossing her leg over the other.
"Anything interesting happen today?"
โNo, thatโs definitely not it.โ He snickered. โSheโs just sleepy, poor thing.โ
He set his drink down and leaned back on the couch.
โNot terribly. Taking confessions does wear a person down, though.โ
โI donโt doubt that.โ
Another sip that burns as it goes down. She canโt tell if she likes it or hates it. Then her finger just circles around the glassโs rim.
โYou probably have a high tolerance though.โ
โMost of it is pretty boring, to be honest.โ He shrugged and leaned forward to take another drink.
โAt least give me something juicy, you know?โ
"Oh, totally. I would kill for something not mind-numbing to happen around here, or some gossip that really shakes things up." She downed the last little bit of alcohol.
"You know, that isn't about me."
โI hate to tell you, but usually itโs you.โ He confirmed.
He took another slow, deep sip.
โI suppose where there isnโt drama, I can always make drama.โ
She shrugs.
"At this point, I don't care. It's just ... boring, you know ? Variety wouldn't kill them."
โWell, I suppose it frees up your time. Fewer distractions. What would you rather be focusing? What would you prefer to do?โ
"With Faye, I don't really think too much about stuff like that. And, god, I love her to bits, but babies are dull."
She leans over to pour herself another drink with a sigh.
"I need more stimulation, but I can't fathom how right now."
โWell, I can think of a few waysโฆโ he said with a cheeky smirk, finishing his drink.
โIn any case, they may not be great conversation, but you can draw funny eyebrows on them and take pictures.โ
"Tried that." she said flatly.
"But I'm interested in those 'few ways' you just brought to my attention. Care to share ?"
He shrugged.
โOh, whoโs to say, really? People find all sorts of things stimulating. I donโt imagine youโd be interested in cocaine?โ
"How straight do you think I am? If it weren't for the fact that I have to feed Faye, I'd be extremely open to it."
โYeah, Iโm guessing coke packs a bigger punch than cognac.โ He admitted. โWell, back to the drawing board.โ
Another sigh as her head rested on his shoulder.
"Don't make me think. At least not too much."
โYou could always get Sister Delphine to watch Faye for a night and meet me at the hotelโฆโ he offered.
"Oh ... You're right. I completely forgot that was an option." she admitted.
โOf course; I wouldnโt give up my only opportunity to get peace and quiet so easily.โ
โAnd youโre oh-so-lucky to have a place like that. I definitely need to weasel my way in soon. Mama needs it.โ
โLuck has nothing to do with it; I fought hard for that peace and quiet. But, I could be convinced to let you inโฆIโm sure you would like to unwind.โ

Vincent would have been annoyed if he wasnโt so pleased. Any sign of their relationship- and especially Fayeโs parentage- should not be left out where it might be seen by anyone. However, he was too happy about the alcohol and Hemmingways to really feel any irritation.
He brought the bottle with him when he went to visit. Another thing he tried to avoid but was driven to by the curiosity her note had sparked.
When Reina answered the door, he held out the cognac.
โSurprise! You didnโt think Iโd come.โ
Reina chuckled and leaned against the door frame, amused by the little display at her front door. A quick shake of the head, she turned back into the house to return to Faye. The abandoned, open door was an obvious sign that he was more than welcome to come in.
"It was fifty-fifty." She said in a nonchalant faรงade as her shoulders shrugged. "I figured the temptation might get you."
โCuriosity.โ He corrected her. โAnd to thank you in person. Althoughโฆโ he paused, closing the open front door and looked at her reproachfully over his glasses. โYou ought to be careful about leaving such personal items and messages out. People around here do love to snoop, you know.โ
"Tomayto, tomahto." She sung out as made sure the baby was fine, but ultimately opting to pick her up.
"I was carefulโwell, as careful as I could be. Sister Sarah was running interference while I let Faye charm a few other Sisters."
โHate to tell you, but if thereโs another person involved, itโs not a secret. What makes you think Sister Sarah wonโt run her mouth if the moment calls for it?โ
He tentatively left the entryway and peered into the living room.
"Sister Sarah doesn't really know anything, Vincent. I told her I needed a favour, and considering our friendship, she didn't really ask any questions."
Faye was grabbing at Reina's finger, giggling every time her tiny nose was poked.
"At most, she just thinks I have a massive crush on you."
โWell, who doesnโt?โ He snickered. โMost donโt break into my office to show it, though.โ
He moved closer so he could peer at the face of the giggling baby. He was always a little bit nervous around her, though he wasnโt entirely sure why.
"Can anyone blame me? Who wouldn't have a big, fat crush on the endlessly charming and outrageously hot Father?" Reina chuckled. She sounded sarcastic for sure, but was totally sincere.
She twisted slightly so that Vincent could see the child better; Faye was still engrossed with her mother's finger.
โOh, of course not.โ He answered, matching her tone with his own. โMany such cases. The younger Sisters have been captivated by my presence since I first took the cloth.โ
He paused, brow furrowing slightly as he watched Faye hold her motherโs finger with all her tiny might. She would never be one of those girls. Not if he had any say in it.
"To nobody's surprise." Her eyes rolled as she let out another chuckleโit was flat, nearing on exasperated, as if she couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"Do you wanna hold her for a little before she has to go down for a nap?"
โWell, I would hope not. They need someone looking after their best interests to thoroughly take advantage.โ
Holding any baby made him uneasy; they were so wiggly, it was like trying to hold a trout. But he knew Reina would be pissed if he didnโt, so he held his arms out.
Reina carefully put their child into his arms. When she knew they were okay, she kissed Faye on the head and got up to head into the kitchen.
"Do you want anything while I'm in here?" she called as the sounds of glass clinking accompanied her voice.
He accepted the strange, unstable bundle and carefully balanced her in his arms. It was hard to determine if a baby liked him or not, but he didnโt imagine this one did.
โWell, I did bring this cognac with me.โ He pointed out.
"Very true." she replied.
After some more mucking around in the kitchen, Reina came back with a singular glass and set it on the table. In the other hand, she was finishing off a chocolate covered strawberry. When she eyes the two, it was obvious how out of his element Vincent looked.
"Feel free to hand her back whenever you're ready, by the way."
โWhat, none for you?โ He blinked at the single glass. โThatโs hardly any fun.โ
He made an attempt to hold Faye still as he sat down, using his lap for more stability.
โNo, noโฆโ he tried to assure her. โIโve got it.โ
"OhโI, uh ..." She mulls it over, heavily debating whether on or not she should drink. It should be fine though ... right? Reina gives a carefree shrug as she whirls back into the kitchen for a second glass.
"Fiiiiiiiine. You've convinced me. But Faye's gonna be put down first."
โAtta girl.โ He grinned, patting the babyโs belly gently.
โIs she easy to get to sleep? โPut downโ is such a strange way to put it, thoughโฆโ
"She is usually." Reina's small smile can practically be heard.
She reappears and handles the bottle, pouring him his drink first. Faye stared up at the stubbly man, eyes fighting to stay open.
"You wanna try?"
โTry what?โ He glanced down at the sleepy baby. โPutting her to bed? It canโt be too hard, right? You justโฆ.put her in the crib. Right?โ
