Here we go again! Didn’t take long to figure out a good lacquer job isn’t so much about the spraying. Ah, risk. I would say I hate it but I do keep taking risks. Like spraying my first real BURST. Yes! Saw this tip from @stewmac_guitar about protecting the top and back while I darken the sides up. Then it’s sand back any overspray and spray the amber color. Then there’s that whole burst part. Pencil and sand off. With this Birdseye, twice per grit. Works well, but MAN when you’re sanding and your arm is about to fall off and there’s still just a faint bit of pencil still showing and you’re just grinding! 😱 Haha. It’s brutal. Ah, spraying again. Such a love hate relationship with spraying lacquer. But I’m refreshed and ready. I’m spraying clear lacquer. I spoke to Mohawk customer service and apparently I’m laying it on WAY too thick 🤣 This particular product is rated for four thin coats. He’s like “how much have you been putting on?!” Let’s just say a little more than that 😁 He recommended their stringed instrument lacquer, which is not only rated for a thicker application but it’s also a bit more flexible. But for this walnut I’m hoping for an “open pore” finish. Not trying to fill every pore with the lacquer.
