Iāve loved seeing the parallels in EwB between how the men (who are attracted to Wine) interact with her, compared to how Lal (who is also attracted to Wine) interacts with her. This overlap with alcohol, in particular, is very visible. Just some examples that require few words.
āPouringā a drink (forgive the pun, I love them)
Offering a drink
Assessing drunkeness
All the men in these examples are clearly looking to take advantage of Wine, if not actively contribute to putting her in a more vulnerable position. All great examples of how misogynistic men see women as opportunities that can be manipulated to get their desires met. No wonder Wine isolates herself. Creepy men have honed in on her in a disturbing way.
Lal, on the other hand, is constantly assessing what Wine needs, wants, and how to ensure she has the best time. Sheās obviously attracted to Wine, but even before she develops deep feelings, she cares for her with her actions. She sees her as an actual person who has, and should have, agency. I actually couldnāt find any instance of Lal even offering Wine alcohol. When Lal offers Wine a drink itās been āvitaminsā, yoghurt (lol), and water. Or, as pictured above, to give her an opportunity to feel included without having alcohol pushed on her.
I donāt think this is ground breaking analysis or anything, itās just a something that fits well into the themes of the show. People and relationships are not always what they seem. Pleasing words and apparent kind actions are meaningless when they are grounded in selfishness and manipulation. Real care is valuing other people, as people, and cultivating connections.
Lal is good at this and deserves everything she wants and I hope she never cries again.
Honestly, Tvyek is pretty miraculous. Itās permeable to water vapor but not to water, itās nearly impossible to tear, but can be easily cut. Itās cheap and made entirely without binding chemicals. In addition to being used for wristbands, itās used to wrap construction sites to keep out water during construction, for tear-resistant envelopes at Fed-Ex, coveralls for mechanics, and my wallet, actually.
Fun tip, though it looks like paper, Tyvek is plastic, and cannot be recycled with paper.

Everything the trump administration does reminds me of all those times a bunch of people who have never run a convention before are like "a festival can't be hard" and try to run a festival and they completely fail and people end up without accommodation and dehydrating on an island or whatever because the whole thing was a quick cash grab by a handful of idiots who assumed that it would be easy with zero experience and zero knowledge and zero professional advice.
Except instead of conning a handful of nerds and instagram influencers, they're doing it to the most powerful country in the world.
Also they have the power to ruin the lives of citizens who they think don't respect them enough. The best that incompetent festival organisers can usually do is try to cancel them online.
We're gonna have a great ball pit, the most amazing ball pit, liberals won't let America build ball pits anymore. Seth Meyers is being VERY UNFAIR for saying President Trump has tiny balls. NBC should fire him like a dog because his ratings are. The picture of the ball pit in the failing New York Tlmes is FAKE NEWS
Okay. But the problem with the Drumpf administration is that except for the cheeto, he is surrounded by people who are actually extremely competent at what they do. The problem is that āwhat they doā is āextract resources into the hands of as few people as possible, with complete disregard for their future or the future of others.ā
Most of what they are doing is straight out of the Project 2025 handbook. Even the shitshow of the reflecting pool was just a thinly veiled ruse to quickly move taxpayer money into the hands of cronies. Itās all purposefully done, with the intended outcomes occurring.
This is also true of a great many failed festivals

bingewatching will never come close to bingereading. there is nothing like blocking out the entire Earth for ten hours to read a book in one sitting no food no water no shower no bra and emerging at the end with no idea what time it is or where you are, a dried-up prune that's sensitive to light and loud noises because you've been in your room in the dark reading by the glow of a single LED. it's like coming back after a three-month vacation in another dimension and now you have to go downstairs and make dinner. absolutely transcendental
you cannot convince me that, within 15 minutes of the press release from the Hail Mary Project that, while unfortunately a lab accident did kill the primary and back up science officers for the mission, Dr. Ryland Grace was kidnapped and drugged bravely volunteered to step into the role of science officer to ensure the project still met its launch date, the project's public-facing email address was not flooded with emails from Dr. Grace's former students. and more kept coming. some to accounts that should've been private. and then come messages from his former colleagues. and Stratt, ever pragmatic, prints out as many as the team can verify are legit, puts them in a box, and places that box within Grace's things. because while maybe she couldn't convince him that he was the right man for the role, the kids he tried to cite as being why he wasn't could.
but, due to the fog of the amnesia, then the urgency of the mission plus Rocky's appearance, Grace doesn't fully look through every box until they're on their way to Erid. and that's when Rocky wakes up from sleep to see Grace sobbing over a bunch of letters. students telling him how much they enjoyed his class, actually made learning fun and interesting. got them through tough days. made them feel seen and appreciated. quite a few cite his class as being the spark that got them interested in science as a career. and even those that didn't still consider him the best teacher they ever had. fellow teachers admiring his classroom management and lesson planning, and even so his kindness to every student who walked into his room.
one letter is from the principal. when Dr. Grace's involvement in the Hail Mary Project became public knowledge, there was a push from the community to rename the school after him. after discussions with the school board, there had been a secret agreement to do so, even had a new sign made. they were just waiting for him to be released from the project and return to San Fransisco to surprise him. but, with the recent news of his "noble sacrifice", they'd gone ahead and done it. attached the press release with a picture of the new sign, a bunch of his former students standing around it, beaming. a local artist has been commissioned to add a mural to the front entrance over the summer break. and a final note: "Do your work knowing that it will allow the Dr. Ryland Grace Middle School to continue to educate and inspire students for generations."
after he managed to stop leaking, Grace reads Rocky some of the letters. and its in that moment that Rocky swears that, should they find a way to keep Grace alive on Erid, he will teach there.
________
You will be remembered as a hero. ________
For those wondering about the fox. Grace has a subtle motif with this animal throughout the movie, but especially this shot where they pack this toy fox with his belongings on the Hail Mary. The pose of it looked a little haunting to me, thus prompting this illustration. __________ (Small/large prints are also available on my etsy ā¤ļø)
I think itās so telling that tumblr draws grace a little uglier than Ryan gosling rlly is and instagram draws him like that triangle yaoi imagine

insane to me how, to some people, this is not a common sense
First time I see the full lyrics without it being take me to snurch (snail church)
What really makes this for me is that OP could have phoned it in on the chorus and just repeated the same fics, but no. They found a unique one every time. Class act.
But what if the princess was in the towerĀ because she was the dragon?
Like the queen gives birth and oops itās this adorable little scaley lizard with tiny wings that she can never quite seem to fold right
None of the Kingās advisors or doctors can explain it, no one can remember anyone who might have cursed the royal family, plus sire sheās clearly yours still I mean look at those eyes
They just kind of accept it and keep her in a tower so no one tries to slay her
The queen or castle servants reading bedtime stories to the toddler princess, whoās made a nest of her favorite toys and some jewelery she stole off her mother, and when she laughs little puffs of smoke come out of her mouth
The king being so proud when she flies across the room for the first time
And once the princess comes of age, confused knights breaking into the tower to find a twenty foot long dragon sitting at the vanity getting her horns polished by her handmaidens
and the ākidnappedā princess is her girlfriend?
this feels like a minotaur myth gone amazingly right.
Okay, who brought this back? Because I havenāt seen notes on this thing in literally months.
She goes flying around the surrounding kingdoms, just watching and listening.
And pretty soon she has a dozen girls sharing the tower with her.
Some were being pushed to marry, or promised in marriage to someone they hated. Some were already married.
Some were poor, or hunted, or enslaved.
Some were thrown out, abandoned, banished.
Thereās a princess there, yes, one who would rather sit in the solar and read books than marry a boorish prince and interact with her subjects all day.
Thereās a wizard-student who fled her university after one of the professors tried to curse her for disagreeing with him.
Thereās a girl who ran away to be a knight, and a girl who was thrown out for being pregnant, and a wife who ran out the door with her toddler carried in her broken arms, her belly swollen and unwieldy, and stories circulate from the bar the next day about how the dragon swooped down and stole away a manās wife.
Probably ate her, he says. Good riddance.
Thereās a formerly-wealthy merchant wife, cast out by her husband in middle age so he can wed someone young and pretty.
Thereās an elderly grandmother whoās outlived her family and her usefulness.
A street child, rag-clad and starving. A baby, left abandoned on a hillside.
It begins to filter through the land, spoken from fathers to daughter, husbands to wives, employers to servants: if you are bad, the dragon will take you. if you are stubborn, or willful, or refuse to marry, the dragon will find you. if you are useless, or slovenly, or disobedient, you will be thrown out and the dragon will pluck you up in its claws and take you back to its lair filled with bones.
They do not understand that this is not a threat but a promise.
They do not know that the version their servants tell each other, their wives tell their daughters, their mothers tell circles of friends, isĀ āif you are desperate, the dragon will find you. if you want out, the dragon will rescue you. if you pause outside, and tell your fears to the soft beating of wings somewhere in the sky, you will fly, and the dragon will carry you home.ā
There are bones, but they are surrounded by living flesh.
The tower, the Princessās Tower in the central kingdom, is hidden by the finest spells and left alone by longstanding tradition. The nature of the Princessās curse is a matter of speculation, but most likely, people say, she is under some fairyās enchantment, and she will sleep for a hundred years until the right prince finds the way in.
The wizard-student was fairly advanced in her studies, and is quite good at teaching the runaway scullery-maid and the young unmarried mother turned out when her belly showed. The gates to the far reaches of the tower grounds open to a hillside two kingdoms away, and to an alleyway in a major city, and to a deep tideswept cave near a fishing village and a harbor, and to a storage room in the oldest wing of the Princessās home palace.
The rich former merchantās wife sorts through the dragonās hoard of gold and gems, and delivers instructions to the runaway postulant and the worn old farm wife; dressed as a young clerk and a common tradesman, they go to call on this merchant who sets the best prices, and that factor who has misplaced goods available for a low price, and this manufacturer of looms and that seller of books.
The farm wife knows the best sheep to buy at market, the ewes who will bear twins and the lambs which will have the finest wool. Another country over, this time in the company ofĀ āhisā elderlyĀ āfather,ā she buys cows that will give good milk, and chickens that will lay good eggs.
An elderly wizard visits a university, and inquires after their library; she is let in, and watched as she pages through books filled with arcane topics in languages she canāt understand; back at the tower, the wizard girl and her students capture the pages in a scrying crystal.
A pretty young fishwife smiles at the vegetable-seller as her daughter clings to her skirts, and soon the girls and women of the tower have seeds to plant. Looms hum, and dyestuffs are boiled, and even the poorest in their former lives wear bright dresses, or breeches and tunics if they prefer.
The dragon brings back a pirate woman from the harbor, stolen from the hangmanās noose while the crowd cheers; she knows where there is treasure stored, and soon the young girls have gems to play with, and the girl who ran away to be a knight has someone to learn proper swordwork from.
The little girl whose first flight was in her motherās broken arms wants to be a blacksmith; when a swordblade breaks, the dragon breathes on it, as long as needed, while the child determinedly hammers it back together.
The dragon princess surveys her kingdom with approval. It is small, and tonight she will fly over a small town, where she heard breaking crockery and yelling last night, to see if someone steps out into the darkness and wishes for a better life, and tomorrow there may be one more.

DAMN, this got better! I donāt care the format, be it a movie, a series or a book, I need this story like I need air.

I live in the northwest coast of Canada so we walk everywhere and do stuff outside in the rain and swim in whatever lakes and rivers we find so imagine my smug sense of Canadian superiority when I met a USAmerican Midwesterner who was horrified at the very thought
And then I went to the USAmerican Midwest
And I understood
What I mean to say is that it's very easy to delude yourself into believing you are more in tune with your environment when your environment is not actively hostile to your existence in every conceivable way
BC, Canada:
Rains frequently, but the worst is like standing under a bathroom shower. Genuinely inhospitable rainstorms are uncommon.
Along the coast, it's pretty easy in most areas to walk to at least one store, or else there's usually a bus or shuttle available. There are sidewalks and bike lanes everywhere.
It's a temperate boreal rainforest, so while there are many freshwater lakes and rivers, they're usually pretty cold. The biggest danger is typically getting caught in a strong current, and the most dangerous animals in swimming distance are on land.
Earthquakes happen almost every day, but the vast majority go unnoticed. Buildings are designed to withstand bigger seismic activity, so unless it's a 5 or higher it just kind of feels like having low blood sugar for a second. There are no tornados
Rural Illinois, USA:
One minute it's sunny, then ten minutes later that distant smudge on the horizon has swallowed the entire sky in black clouds and the water is coming down like waterfall and you literally CANNOT SEE. Then there's a crash like cymbals and you need to get indoors because the thunder and lightening are on TOP of you
No sidewalks until you are in the smack dab center of town, which is a three hour walk or twenty minute drive from wherever you are.
There aren't many natural bodies of water other than small ponds and creeks, and because the environment is so much warmer, those are filled with snapping turtles that can grow bigger than a nine year old child and water snakes that are incredibly venomous. These are paired with leeches and mosquitos for that sweet umami flavor.
Sometimes Jupiter, Lord of the Heavens decides to jam his finger into the side of your house just to fuck with your whole shit and throws your truck a thousand yards into the nearest church
š The Hidden Wisdom of Animals: Surprising Things We Can Learn from Nature by Kate Siber, illustrated by Kaitlynn Copithorne
Rating: ššš/5
āJust like all the creatures in this book and across the planet, we are animals too. We breathe and move. We take in food, air, and light. Even if we donāt hear like an owl, see like a fly, or have the sensitive skin of a frog, we sense the world around us in astonishing detail. We too have gifts to share with our fellow citizens of Earth.ā
This is such a lovely book to read, put down, and come back to when I feel like it. Itās hopeful and inspiring and the animals bring up such good points on how weāre similar and what we can do thatās important. I liked the mix of animals and bugs because bugs are such a boon to nature and we often overlook them, but this book told such nice details of their lives.
