A little note on the complaints on lack of representation in Fandomstuck
((Not too long ago, I saw someone complaining about a particular issue of the lack of representation in the non-cis gendered characters/fandoms within fandomstuck. Now I can understand the frustration, but the whole approach is fucking bullshit for many reasons.
1) If people make cis gendered characters, and that is the normative, that is their choice not yours. Representation would be great but complaining in a fashion to shun and guilt is highly inappropriate and will produce the opposite affect you want.
2) In that thought, many are probably very under-educated/hold misconceptions/haven’t even a clue on the gender conceptions and how this works. So setting this attitude it is wrong that they make a consistency of cis characters, is wrong. Because if they try to make a character out of the norm of their knowledge there is a far greater chance to misrepresent or really ruin the meaning and goal you are seeking for representation of non binary genders. More likely than not, in the post I reblogged, it’ll become a trend, get out of hand, and will not end well. As most things in fandomstuck or tumblr in general do tend to do. And this will harm the credibility you seek in proving validation and truth to what should be respected and represented but properly.
3) Trend wise, or out of “wow I feel bad because they are right”, will likely produce characters that have non binary genders as just because. Which adds no healthy representation or depth to any particular character at all. People need a reason, to make good characters as anyone knows, it fuels the character to make it relatable and real. And if they have no conception or the wrong idea of how it goes, then that’s two negatives in one.
4) If you really want representation of yourself so bad, make the characters/fandoms yourself for the love of god. Stop coercing others to change their characters and stories because that is being an asshole and frankly, very inappropriate as well. This goes for what character they rp, what gender they are, sexual orientation, who they do and do not talk to, who they are and are not in whatever sort of relationship they are in, etc. That is not for you to decide, it is not your character. You want it? Make it yourself or find someone else who does fit what you want.
Now I do have an agendered character (not much viewed because all my plots have been on hold for….forever). But to give an example of what I mean for how to give reason and make it feel real, or give your character depth and background, I will explain why my character is what ze is.
Now Superwholock, or Devin, is androgynous and uses the pronouns Ze/Zer. The reasons I made zer so, is because I had a talk with Kade aka Dreamy/pokemon/nightmare/others mun. He suggested I try out a non binary character, because I wanted to try something different and create more with my characters and break my comfort zones because I want some diversity too. Rather than what I’ve grown up with. And after some research on angels, I found that it is common that they do not adhere to any specific gender, angels themselves tend to be agendered. They may appear in male or female form, however they do not associate with either gender. So adding that in with how I was making a character with Supernatural ties, and a big thing is angels, and given they can take up residency in any body (male/female/etc.) they so choose it really fit a viable reason to give that trait to my character. It provided me reason and something I can use to create backstory and depth to my character as to why certain things are regardless of the biological body type ze has.
Dreamy, or Andromeda, is another example. If you ever asked Kade to explain why, he has a very very good reasonable explanation that adds life to the character. It makes it believable, represent-able, and relateable, and real. And this is so important for those of you who want to be writers and want to improve your writing, and for any of those of you who just love rping.
So, I thought I’d throw this out before it becomes a mess and someone has the gall to make it even worse or be basically immature as per usual about this kinda bullshit. It’s okay to make mistakes if you are learning and trying and DOING YOUR RESEARCH TO UNDERSTAND not by just a singular hear-say or basically the bullshit you find strictly here on tumblr. It’s okay, because you are trying and frankly going to be doing a better job than someone winging it with no concept at all of what they are doing or about what they are representing because someone made them to, or because it was cool.
