TV Analysis (Easter Homework)
HOUSE M.D. a. There is a transition of warm, natural lighting from the classroom to artificial, white lighting in the hospital. When one of the characters was falling ill a compilation of close up shots, point of view and fast panning shots were used to show distress and disorientation. This is used along side the non diegetic sound effect of a heartbeat and a high pitch ring. This allows the audience to see what the character is going through whilst adding a dramatic enigmatic effect, adding to the emotional complex behind the narrative. b. In the clip, ethnic diversity is used as African American and Hispanic people are included amongst Caucasians, yet a token African American character is used as a to break into houses and is seen as 'dangerous' according to Alvarado's theory. c. In the clip many conventions of a medical drama are used including: -white doctors coats -imagery of the inside of a body -hospital setting -announcer of a nurses station in the background -character falling ill in the narrative -doctors have to make life or death decisions -death
TV Analysis (Easter Homework)
SCRUBS a. There is a transition of warm, natural lighting to artificial white lighting when entering the hospital. This is to make the setting more realistic as the audience may associate White lights with cleanliness, thus hospitals. Tracking shots are commonly used throughout as it indicates who the narrative is aimed at. In some cases multiple characters come into frame throughout the tracking shot which either introduces of concludes the narrative as these shots are either at the start or the end of the episode. Also, there are many non diegetic sound effects used throughout, for example a 'swoosh' is used when JD is moving his head, which adds a comedic effect and makes the scene more light hearted for the audience. Moreover, an internal monologue is used as a constant throughout all episodes which gives more comedic opportunities. This also allows character development so the audience can feel a greater connection with the main character. b. The programme does not shows much ethnic diversity but include two token characters: Turk and Carla. Turk is used to add a comedic effect as there are many racial jokes presented in this scene: 'dude be whiter'. This supports Alvarado's theory of either playing a role to be exotic, dangerous, humorous or pitied. In this case humorous. Also Carla is Hispanic so she is seen as quite an aggressive yet motherly figure. For example she gives JD the nickname of 'Bambi' as she sees him as a vulnerable character. c. Scrubs includes many conventions of a medical drama such as blood, sick characters, doctor related activities and it is set in a hospital.

Torodovâs theory states that each film follows five different stages of narrative: Equilibrium, disruption, recognition, repair and the new equilibrium. This theory can be applied to the 1985 film Back to the future. The film begins by introducing us to the equilibrium of Marty Mcflyâs everyday...
PROPPâS THEORY- SHREK
1) Hero - who seeks something (love, to solve a crime, to get his parents back together and return to the future) 2)Villain - who opposes the hero 3)Princess - who needs protecting and saving by the hero, and is their reward on successful completion of the mission 4)Helper - who helps the Hero 5) Donor - provides the hero with a magical object so that they can complete their quest 6)False Hero - assumes the role of the hero but is unable to complete the mission In Shrek : 1) The hero- Shrek who needs to solve the crime of why the fairytale creatures are illegally camping outside of his swamp 2)The villain- Lord Farquaad sent the fairytale creatures to Shrek's swamp. He sends Shrek to rescue his princess from the castle and as a reward will give Shrek his swamp exactly how it was. 3)The princess- Princess Fiona is saved by Shrek from the castle, who she believes is her prince for saving her, but he tells her that Lord Farquaad will be her prince. She finds out that Shrek is an ogre. 4)The helper- Donkey who accompanies Shrek throughout the journey to rescue the princess 5)The donor- dragon who helps stop wedding of Lord Farquaad and Fiona when Shrek realises he loves her, and finds out that she is an ogre too. 6)The False hero- Lord Farquaad earned the princess even though he got Shrek to complete the mission to save her from the castle, however Shrek and Fiona end up in love.
Representation Homework (Just Kidding News)
Just kidding news is a radio podcast the reports different and obscure news articles also giving feedback and opinions on the news presented.
Some of the reporters use different accents to imitate different personas. For example in 'Wife Humiliates Her Husband In Public After He Overpays For Baby Food', Joe speaks in an over emphasised Chinese accent when saying 'I'm so sorry' as he represents his father. This relates to the Alvarado Theory as the accent was used to give a sense of comedic value, as if to mock the statement.
Also Joe sometimes talks in a Mexican accent which applies John Hartley's Theory. As he uses it in a light hearted way, not associating the accents with the stereotype of a Mexican, it just adds variation to the conversation to make the listeners more entertained by the subject. Most commonly he uses it when changing the topic of conversation so the accent is also used as a signifier that there is going to be a change in topic. He says words such as 'yeah' and 'I agree' which aren't commonly associated with the stereotype therefore not using it to mimic Mexicans.
Just Kidding News could also come under the Richard Dyer Representation Theory as many of the news articles are about issues in society. For example, they are mainly based on people harming others or scams from around the world. Examples include: 'Girlfriend Fakes Her Own Kidnapping to Avoid Planning Her Boyfriend's Birthday Party' and 'Girl Fight Breaks Out At Walmart'. They use these news articles to intrigue the audience and as the hosts have quite outspoken personalities, it tends to spark up a debate about the world and the positives and negatives that come with it. This theme is consistent in many of their episodes so it mainly is directed to the same audience which varies between 16 and 25 year olds (as the content can be quite immature and shocking in places).Â
In the video clip, Jimmy Carr represents regional dialects in a stereotypical and negative way for comedic effect. He conforms to several stereotypes of different parts of Britain including Scotland having a drink and drugs problem and being âUnemployed and relying on benefitsâ He also uses the...
