The fire between them was undeniable now. Raw, bright, dangerous.
They were a study in opposites: Hazel, all curves and quiet defiance, her hazel eyes burning brighter than the lightning overhead; John, cut from sharper lines, golden hair loose around a face hardened by survival. Together they were imperfect, and yet, standing there in the rain, they looked like two halves of the same storm.
John leaned in and kissed her.
It was brief at first, barely a second, like a question, like he was giving her the chance to stop him.
Her hands slid up around his neck, pulling him back in, and the next kiss was different. Real.
His lips were warm and sure, his beard brushing her cheek. He tasted of peaches and smoke, mint and whiskey. It hit her all at once, how long she’d wanted this, how much she’d tried to pretend she didn’t.
John kissed her again, deeper this time, his hand cupping the back of her head as though afraid she’d vanish if he let go. Every part of him was shaking - want, disbelief and relief all tangled into one. The rain pounded around them, but all he felt was her.
She pressed closer, answering him with the same desperate tenderness, savouring every second, every breath. Behind their eyes there were sparks, fireworks, storms. Everything they’d held back exploding all at once.
When they finally pulled apart, their foreheads rested together, eyes closed, breathing uneven. The rain drenched them, but neither cared. For that moment, the world was only them.
“John…” she whispered, her voice soft, trembling.
He felt it like a current through him.
