I am gathering this is more about drawing the characters than anything. (If I misunderstood please correct me!)

My blanket rule for literally anything is you don't need my permission to draw or write anything. I honestly think it's rad if something I made inspired someone else to make something in turn. I also think once you put a story out there for people to read , you can expect people might interpret it/engage with it in ways you don't intend. I also totally understand the desire to project aspects of your own identity onto fictional characters you like, or to "play toys" so to speak. In that regard, be free!

That being said, just be mindful of any of their explicitly stated backgrounds. If someone headcanoned Thao as anything other than Vietnamese I'd side eye that pretty hard, for example.
