Friday night is for the whitebois...
And this Friday night we're celebrating EUROVISION baby!
For the uninitiated: Eurovision is a once year event part Coachella, part Glastonbury, part circus, part Pride march, part international singing contest, part fever dream. Every artist there represents a different european (ahem) country and are allowed exactly, and only, three minutes to strut their stuff. Performances are an explosion of peak camp and chaotic energy, featuring world class vocals and frequently unhinged staging. Songs range from the stirringly anthemic to soaring ballads to whimsical little ditties to banging club tracks. It is fundamentally ridiculous, wildly brilliant and is the only place in the world where a heavy metal band in demon masks could unironically compete with a bearded Bond girl diva, a fiddle playing hobbit and a maniacal puppet turkey called Dustin. And I'm not even making that up.
How will you celebrate? Will you be in the crowd cheering on and waving your flag? At home, watching at a Eurovision party? (The drinking games are legendary) Will you be on stage performing, if so what and how? (Perhaps an homage to a previous performer!) Will you be one of the sickeningly multi-talented, multi-lingual comperes? Or perhaps one of the phone vote judges who didn't spend two hours in hair and makeup just to be chivvied along and will absolutely take their damn time?
