he’s starting to like her in spite of himself. that’s annoying. but tony does roll his eyes as she continues to insist that she works for SHIELD, psychic paper and british uniform be damned. she really could give cap a run for his money with that kind of stubbornness.
“i’d like to point out that i’m not particularly fond of SHIELD right now, since they tried to nuke my city, so it’s really not as strong an argument as you think.” if he thought she was SHIELD, she’d already be kicked out onto the street, is what he’s saying.
she brings up a good point though.
“yeah, yeah, i know. UNIT usually clean everything up far more effectively. you’re right, what’s the difference between the chitauri over new york and the daleks that were over london a couple years ago?”
( the difference is that daleks are fifty, a hundred, a THOUSAND times worse than a bunch of chitauri. how they were defeated he has no idea but—– they still haunt every nightmare he has. )
“if i had to hypothesise—— the tesseract. SHIELD’s possession of the tesseract is what caused this incursion, and because SHIELD personnel were so closely involved, UNIT had no way of sweeping in and taking over. and then fury got us superheroes involved, and well. we’re hard to disguise.”
he shrugs, spreads his hands wide.“but that’s just my hypothesis. what’s yours?”
amy blinks up at him from her position at the table. "i don't know if you know this: but you don't have to like a company to work for them." she settles back in the chair and crosses her legs, and maybe it's a move that's more kiss-o-gram than secret agent, but wasn't he more of a playboy in this time? maybe the move will work to her advantage. "the pay is certainly enough to pay the bills."
UNIT - they weren't there when the doctor first crashed into her life, and then again 12 years after that, or the 2 after that. she hadn't known about UNIT for a while and she still finds it strange that they hadn't shown up after the mess with Prisoner Zero.
"the difference, mr. stark, is that UNIT has had more experience with extraterrestrial invaders. the difference is that the Daleks are so much more terrifying then the Chitauri."
she remembers her first encounter with them, during the blitz, the professor who was made into a Dalek. she remembers the fear, the worry that she won't make it back to rory, to their wedding.
but she tucks that fear away, instead continues to nonchalant stubbornness as stark goes on with his own theory. "i work with alien tech, i don't make up hypothesis for invasions." she can't share too much, doesn't want to give away anything that would effect his future.
"but just for funsies, something went wrong with the tesseract retrieval. whoever wanted it just sent the pawns first to figure out our defenses, and lost. they're reassessing and trying to figure out how to get the tesseract. who ever wanted it just learned that earth has protection, a defense team. and fury just made earth's might avengers very public, that everyone in space will know you exist."
