Man I really did not enjoy that ending, I think the episode really floundered after what 8 setup. To me, this was "flashback & montage!!" the episode ™, I think it worked in some scenes, like those involving Jax, & the montage at the very end with everyone hanging out. but others, not so much.
Ohhhh my god, Jax did not get any sort of character development, they were stagnant the whole way through. I feel that they're a poorly written character, I get that they're meant to be unlikable & an asshole, but it's written so poorly that it turns fans off. All this compiled with the fact that they're meant to be the 2nd protagonist, makes it even worse, a poorly written side character is one thing, but a poorly written lead is another.
They're meant to be unlikable, theyre so insecure that they push others away, but they do physically & mentally abuse them—let's be very clear there is no amount of trauma that will give you the excuse to abuse others. This is not to say that abusive, unlikeable, or irredeemable characters isn't something to write about, its narratively compelling. But it's not executed well here.
Jax is not a character that wants to change, they don't want to be vulnerable in they could get hurt again. This is narratively interesting. They lash out and push away anyone that even attempts to get close to them, often to the worst extreme. This is narratively interesting.
So, on a deeper level are we going to see how other characters choose to confront or avoid them for this? No, The narrative is either going to completely ignore it or touch on it so surface level that it may have been better had it not touched it at all.
Jax isn't really given a push to change, even in the darkest moments of the series there's nothing guiding them towards change. This can be a good plot device, stagnant characters can be written. But nothing comes of it. The plot neither rewards them nor punishes them in any significant way that is narratively interesting. When they abstract, it just happens. We get to see more of their backstory, events that show how much of a bad person they were, we're given reasons to sympathize, but because we've been given no real reason to expect any consequences good or negative, many find it hard to care about this character.
They've had a rough life, they struggle to be vulnerable with people, in turn this makes them abuse others so that they'll have no reason to connect, they are the direct reason for one of their closest friends committing what is the narrative equivalent to suicide. They may have even played a part in the death of their other closest friend. Their actions led to deaths, these deaths making them feel depressed and interns suicidal, does not excuse the coping mechanism that is abusing others. It is a cycle, that's definitely the point. But it is not a narrative satisfying one, because of this it doesn't get a well written ending.
A character I've seen them compared to is Lars from Steven universe, but I'd also like to compare them to azula from Avatar. If this was a sliding scale, the center being an unlikable & charismatic character, one end being Redemption & the other being Retribution. Jax would be in the center, had they actually been a well written character.
Lars is originally an unlikable character, he's a pathetic, cowardly young teen that craves validation of the cool kids, this is something that a general audience can sympathize with, even if his actions are annoying. His character growth is slow, but the narrative addresses it, his actions have a direct impact on those he cares about & seen by those he craves the validation of as off-putting. It takes a big change for him to change significantly as a character. He is a well written character, he could have been done better but this was due to shows own restrictions from execs.
Azula, in turn is a charismatic, unlikable, and unstable character. She has a sympathetic backstory, and in her descent to madness we can sympathize with her, without excusing her actions. Because in general it is terrifying to watch someone fall into madness at their own accord. She is stagnant, and refuses to change. Because of this she does end up changing, for the worst. She is a well written, narratively compelling character.
Jax is not given an opportunity by the writers to experience either side of this scale because—it appears—they didn't want them to experience any character growth of any significance, leaving their impact on the plot to appear completely useless by the end of the series. But they're meant to be the 2nd protagonist. An argument I've seen for this lack of growth, in either direction good or bad, is that Jax is meant to be a cautionary tale. But they fundamentally cannot serve as one if their actions are not addressed by the plot in a meaningful way.
Remember, this post is opinionated, you are allowed to enjoy bad characters, I advocate for it, you're also allowed to enjoy poorly written media, you don't need a justification for either of these. This is not a personal attack against anyone.
I probably repeated myself a lot here to the point of redundancy but you know what that's okay. We can talk and share opinions in the comments and reblogs, and I'll engage if you want me to. But I will not interact if someone is acting childish because this is not a personal attack against anyone.
Current designs for: steven, connie, bismuth, lapis, spinel, eyeball ruby, & jasper are all finished.
Stevens lower hair fades to a nice pink, unsure if it's natural or dyed. I'm very excited to draw Stevonnie!
As usual more of my ramblings under the cut.
Drew Blush Pearl & Coral Pearl chatting :3c.
Lapis & Bismuth, how do we feel about that?
Debating what to call "perfect Steven" in this universe, like the art book said there is no such thing as perfect, Steven is Steven. Might go with Hero Steven like other ppl in the fandom have called him, but also might go with Rose Steven? Since my ver. having a rose style hair?—Steven still has complicated feelings on his mother, but I think in this version they tend to lean more positively even if he still feels a bit overshadowed by her. I think he'd choose that name to honor her. But, that might be something I do a poll on later.
[↓ none of this is hate towards the Steven universe crew, I genuinely don't think they thought about it that hard ↓]
I'm going to be honest, is someone with poor vision and chronic back pain, thinking about it for as long as I did, I don't really enjoy that Connie's disability—poor vision (which is a disability)—just got cured by Stevens healing spit. It's not a small cut or a battle wound, and I understand that he can literally resurrect people, but I'll be honest I don't think they would've "cured her disability" if she had anything else other than needing a prescription. Had she been completely blind, deaf, or needing a mobility aid like a wheelchair or cane, I don't think we'd get anything the sort.
So Connie is keeping her glasses. We will replace the scene with something else, maybe she had a fractured ankle or broken arm that had to be put in a cast only for it to be miraculously healed after the juice box.

y'okay can we stop pretending yet. like can we all acknowledge that eating disorders are chic again, and it's going to kill someone.
and like. do we have to keep gently phrasing things to protect naturally-thin people's feelings. in my life it has never been fashionable to be fat. "fat" is still a bad word. there has never been institutional power pushing people to gain weight; no trillion-dollar industry to "fix" skinny people. a larger body type has never been over-represented in models, influencers, celebrities. sure, people might say "i'm worried for your health," but they do it with respect and gentleness, like they're talking to a scared deer.
every single fucking time i talk about this, i have to be so careful with what i say, in case i offend even one skinny person. it is just true that skinny people have social capital across many cultures. there is a reason you almost never hear someone say "i wish i was fat," but you will constantly see people say "I wish i was thin." and yet inevitably some skinny person will tell me: i thought you wanted body positivity. it is the same fucking attitude as when a cis man says "when you say men have power, well, i've been bullied for being a man. i thought you believe in mental health awareness. don't you know men have a higher suicide rate?"
two things can be true at once: your experience being bullied for being thin was terrible. and people with larger bodies probably have it worse.
i have been big and small. i know many other people who have been big and small. trust what i'm about to tell you: being small is much easier. the world is kinder to you. people treat you better. honestly, this pattern occurs pretty much regardless of gender - my guy friends have confided that they'd rather be bullied for being thin than be bullied for being fat. if you're skinny, the pressure might be to gain weight, sure, but it's often to do so in a way that keeps you skinny - to gain muscle, specifically.
thinness is seen as innate and natural, genetic. whereas carrying any fat - that is a moral failing. it is assumed to be related to your character, your personality. i have seen people equate it to discipline, to hygiene. that bias is why we need to talk about this.
of course i want nobody to make a comment about anyone's bodies. and i think that hyper-thinness and an obsession with weight loss and a recession and a rise of conservative values... all of this is very fucking concerning. we are watching a return of "pro-ana" content, reframed as choice feminism, "health-conscious" behavior, "looksmaxxing". it's fucking terrifying.
Happy pride month but also, happy mens mental health month, remember this encapsulates all men. Trans men, queer men, disabled men, black men, Asian men, unhoused men & marginalized men.
Click here for a national list of suicide hotlines
Men are about 4x more likely to commit suicide than women, trans men, disabled men are roughly 3x more likely to commit suicide the non-disabled individuals. trans individuals in general are have a high suicide rate [accurate statistic to be added],
Check in with your families, your friends, even acquaintances. You never need a reason to reach out, If you're concerned, or even just have an inkling of a feeling, reach out.
This month, on top of their white supremacist and transphobic ass rhetoric, conservatives, especially those on the manosphere are going to use men's mental health month is an excuse to bash pride month.
Under no other context would these creators care about the mental health of their viewers or men in general. By disregarding pride they're disregarding queer men, showing more of their disinterest in mental health until it's something they can use as a tool.
These people don't actually care about men they only care about what can line their pockets and get them power. And right now that's the ability to give misogynistic men a little boost in pride so they can have a small win even on the one month that caters to a marginalized group they don't like.
These types of creators especially have targeted young men, ranging from roughly 10 to early 20s, the type of rhetoric they spew—misogynistic, white supremacist, racist, queerophobic nonsense, are all things that will affect young men, not just the image they have of others but also theirselves. The "grindset alpha males" also has a horrible impact on young men's body image, men are just as susceptible to eating disorders and unhealthy practices as women and other groups. Please, if you worry for a young boy or a young man that may be getting sucked down these rabbit holes, reach out. Guide them towards better outlets, shaming or inciting violence—especially on those with impressionable minds—will often only encourage those children & young adults to sink further into the cesspit and become more radicalized as you have proven them right, the "others" are all "like that".
Pink is finally done!! Click here to see her pearl.
She's gone through so many different forms, the other diamonds maybe more tender with her but they always look at her... off. Like she's wrong. But she thinks this form finally feels like her.
She doesn't know about Steven, yet. But he also doesn't know about her...

Few bits of art from my SU AU that follows Black Diamond & Green Diamond or; Ebony & Flora.
Green diamond (she/her) was made after Pink's shattering, she is meant to look into & observe organic life for the Gempire to copy & learn from. Black diamond (it/its) was formed during the same time. she's meant to be an archivist/historian, to look back into the past & see what gems can bring back into use to become more sustainable. Abalone is ebony's pearl.
Melonite is a garnet from black diamonds Court. She's a translator, deciphering old gem text.
Variscite is based off an amy & Peri fusion posted by a cruniverse member that got popular on Reddit, she is not part of the AU.
I can't find the post but I remember you were going over various gems that affected Steven on Homeworld (his pearl, his spinel, etc). You shoot off this gym that had a very tiny gemstone (because of the resource crisis????), so I was wondering does that make her particularly weak? Does she have lots of limitations?
And was this practice done to a lot of other gems?
um, yeah! mainly its that she uh. she does not have any limbs. so she needs special limb enhancers.
Gem quality went to the shitter after Pink died, and Apatite is around 25 years old or so. Other Apatites present other deformities and only the "passable" ones are kept. Faulty batches get discarded. Our Apatite is an "optimal" case scenario
