Been 1 year into creative tec lol 🥳
Year Two planning
What I did:
Played on my ideas based on project brief and requirements
Draw pictures
Learned about prototypes
connecting ideas into prototypes systemic thinking
Discussing my ideas
2. What I want to do:
What could I do to advance my project
Add more structured themes?
How can I make my abstract ideas work: time management & research
Listing what I can do / can’t do at each stage
Creative Technologiest technique (year one)
Kill the baby: jot your ideas as fast as possible and tidy them up by trying to connect together
Systemic thinking: how does one aspect affect another aspect, positively or negatively? (tip: use loopy)
Most basically: sketching and prototyping-- but remember PROTOTYPE IS TO VALIDATE THE METHOD

Visual Essay
I learned that visual essay comes in various forms from the composer’s interests. For example, one of the visual writings I watched was "What Screens Want" by Frank Chimero (2013) which was a long text blog but with the photos between them to support his point. I soon realized that those images actively supports each paragraphs effectively, such as visually examining how our daily objects like telephones became smaller and effective just like the pills.
Another example was an assembly guide booklet which visually explains how one should construct the two stories high bed. I was surprised that It could be classified as a visual essay but I came to realize that it is because the visual aspect is the main and essential part of the booklet.
Prototyping and Sketching
What is Prototyping and sketching?
They sound same because we both use them to iterate and develop our desired design. However, some research define them differently in terms of the stage of the design.
For example, Buxton (2007) states that sketches are mainly used at the earlier stage of design, when we explore ideas and concepts. On the other hand, prototype is mainly used at the deeper stage of iteration, when we begin to collect ideas together and consider desirability and quality.
From writing a questionnaire to reaching the target audience
The procedure of writing the questionnaire for your survey may sound very obvious, but the conductor must consider specific approach for the target audience to answer the question. For instance, we know that the purpose of survey is to mee the research objectives, and obtain most accurate information from interviewees for the project. And in order to do this, we need to define target respondent, question wordings... etc. This is too obvious that one might neglect it and jump straight into developing the research survey question.
However, the blog provided in-depth explanation of the necessary process and method of asking questions. For example, I learnt that
However, the blog provided in-depth explanation of the necessary process and method of asking questions. For example, I learnt that using different types of questions (Open-ended, close-ended, formal, informal) can differ depending on the target audience.
Before asking questions in the form, it is vital that we know how to reach the people we want to hear their response from. In terms of this, Iearnt that there are much more I could say than "hi", "hello", "how are you", and it is very easy if I just say a word, such as asking personal questions, and finding 'me too's.
Rethinking learning in the digital Age
Resnick Mitchel (2014) has shared his perspective of modern technologies and classroom pedagogies. It is true that the needs of technologies in classroom is increasing, but education system did not change from past years. For instance, my school's pedagogy system were also information centered, in which we learn the philosophies of 'important' disciplines, such as Science. Furthermore, we have to research information on internet for the certain subject(s), instead of having opportunity to have experiment around it with technology. Resnick argues that we need to rethink the technical approach in education, from information gathering, into enabling children to actively construct ideas into practice. One illustration of this would be lego mindstorming, where the children can playfully construct using each lego pieces, to obtain ideas about constructivism. Another illustration would be the website called Scratch, where people can learn basic coding and share the animation with others in the platform. As a reult, these resources widens the learning method oppotunities to experimentive, and rapid prototype (create, testing, adjustment, reflection).
007: Signature pedagogies and learning in Creative Technologies
It was interesting to explore the concept of "signal pedagogies" in the #010 blog post. Unlike the other disciplines such as English and science, the pedagogical practice of CT involves collaboration of theories and practical practices. For instance, Creative Technologies have personalized learning spaces in "studio", where the students are allowed to practice and build up their skills by "learning by doing".
The new skills and concepts are introduced by the teaching team to support the student in their skill development, and the students are expected to build up their skills and use it for future studies.
The phase that interests me to learn more in Creative Technologies is "High celling, wide walls, low floor". This basically means CT do not have pre-requests that student need to have certain skills to enter into, and pupils not only can bring whatever skills and prior knowledge they have into CT but also are expected to build new skills. In short, student learn and develop by "learning by doing" principles, with reflection of their learning practices.
I also felt more engaging to learn by chatting with peers, sharing our ideas, and getting inspired by each other's ideas. Furthermore, with reflection practice, I am trying to reflect on my learning process by thinking 'how I did the certain method and why?' 'Which was difficult? how could I solve it?' to learn from my previous process.

#006 what is Creative Technologies and main philosophy?
What is Creative Technology (CT)? I Immediately thought that CT is playing with modern technologies, such as computers. However, when I researched about the Creative Technologies in our blog entries, I was surprised that the CT has more complex definitions, such as collaborating with other disciplines.
For example, the main definition that Ricardo discussed about was
“Emergent and playful practice of ‘Sketching with technology’”.
So the creative technologist starts thinking about ‘where could the techniques of modern technologies be applied in a missing place that I could solve it in a playful way?” Therefore, it can be regarded as ‘exploration and experimentation of the creative solutions to improve our daily lives with some use of modern technology’.
I agree with Extra Credits (2012) with his opinion of adding competition as a new aesthetic because it is one of the reason why I- and others play a certain game. I think competition can be viewed as a both separate and collaborative aspect with the challenge aesthetic. Some games is single or multiple game play with the main challenge that prompts the player(s) to tackle; but they majorly do not include competitions between players. Super Mario Odyssey is one of the example that involves one ~ two players (separate role-play with both protagonists), but the players do not compete with each other but works together for the main challenge.
Compared to this game, other games such as Mario Cart series players are guided to participate in driving competition, where they demonstrate how they could beat the other players and maintain the first place while in-game.
While some games could have challenge or competition aesthetics in their game, I saw that some games such as Dead by Daylight could employ some degree of collaboration between the two aesthetics. The game’s “role-play” is divided into two teams- killer and survivor. Survivors have their own big challenge to escape from the killer and run out of the realm of the killer. So the survivors need to collaborate together to tackle their biggest challenge, and compete with the killer to achieve it. Therefore, I think, the challenge and competition aesthetic can either be collaborative or separate with the one aesthetic at each game.
#004: Innovation and invention is not just about machines
I liked the Steven Johnson’s discussion about how the human started to re-create the public places and landscapes, and build the social relationship in there.
I was shocked to realise that the innovation and inventions were not only just the machines that human being created for years of invention, but also how the people defined the places and let it be the part of the “spark of inspiration” and /or enjoyment.
003: How technologies evolved from thousands years ago & have links to businesses and social integration
So I have been reading the second blog post about the history of creative technologies and how the technologies evolved with the human activities and their interests.
For example, Johnson (2020) introduces ancient evidences of trading in his talk in wonderland: how play made the modern world. The evidence of the ancient jewelry, cloves, and bone flutes suggests that the global-wise trading was already happening from thousands of years ago, by the traders across the country which drived an important global economy which connected the entire world. This have strong relation to modern world because we could see that the trading have evolved for years to become a large global market, both virtually and physically.
While reading this, I could see connections with the ‘three circles of main questions in business’. ‘desirability’, ‘viability’, and ‘feasibility’. As the business only succeed when the customer wants to buy the product, and it is sustainable for the future, the global trading of the spices succeeded and expanded to modern world because the people in Africa- who received the spice- enjoyed and loved tasting spices, so that they begin to desire for new tastes.
Therefore, Johnson (2020) argues that the ‘spark of delight’ in every human activities is the driver of the technology evolution and development.
The example that effectively describes about the human activity and technical evolution would be how the England people started the passion industry from their wool clothes.
From where the people were interested in the new febric and pattern of linen- which the indonessan/indian brought to England, they took it further and thought about making their own design of linens.
002: My first project- Papertronics
In creative studio paper, we made a papertronics that uses a paper and other materials to light the bulbs up, instead of using a traditional wire, batteries and bulbs.
As you can see in the photo, I used a copper tape, a coin battery, and the single light bulb to represent and light up the object from behind it.
I was surprised about learning this new technology and methods because I only seen much larger electric circuit in science class. It was very inspiring to face and experience new technologies and discuss it with my classmates.
